The Pat Kenny Show on News Talk. The Parades Commission has given the Orange Order permission to march along the Garavih Road in Portadown for the first time in almost thirty years. The parade will be limited to thirty five people, there will be no bands or supporters, and it must take place between eight AM. And nine thirty AM tomorrow morning. But the decision has been strongly opposed by residents of the Garvahi Road, who are taking their case to the High Court and were due in Belfast this morning at eleven AM. Matt Carthy is the Sinn Fein TD for the Cavan Monahan constituency, and he will be joining us in a few minutes' time. But first we're joined by Jamie Bryson, legal representative for Portadown District LOL One, which applied
for the parade and he is on the line to go, I suppose, to that High Court challenge this morning. What do you expect to be the outcome of this morning's court hearing, Jamie?
I I don't think the challenge has any um rational prospect of success, but you know, look, let's let let let the law take its course. Uh on the off chance that it did succeed, you know, self evidently the the district and I'm sure the Played's Commission would probably appeal it to the Court of Appeal anyway. Um so I I I don't there's nothing in that which gives me any c cause for concern at this point in time from the perspective of the uh Portadown District.
If the Orange Order's position, Jamie, is that this is all about the right to parade rather than sort of this particular march, where does the Orange Order see the end point here? I mean, as the ultimate objective to try and restore the full Garvahi Road route?
Well I think that the that they have said that they would see that as the um the the resolution to this issue um but that they are open to listen to all sides and engage with everybody um in respect of that with everything on the table. So the the Porter Down district has offered mediation without any precondition, without any predetermined outcome, um and and that remains um th their position. So they're not they're not um putting any demand months uh down, they're they're willing to engage, as they said, with anyone anywhere at any time, uh discuss what a a um agreed, accommodated resolution, final resolution to this issue um would look like and obviously um tomorrow's period doesn't represent that outcome.
You say they are willing to engage, but is it the Orange Order's intention at this point that if the parade does go ahead, that next year they will be reapplying for a larger parade? Is that the end goal?
Well, uh as I said, the Port of Down district's position is that um they say it uh that they should be entitled to have their whole district um return home. Um but they have been clear that, you know, uh at any time they will engage in mediation if and if if others want to come with alternative proposals and want to express different views, then the Portadown District will listen to that, will take those concerns on board and uh and is is in in the mood and is up for uh acting in a spirit of generosity so um but the problem is they can't be it with themselves uh so those opposed to them have to come to the table uh and hopefully display the same generosity and tolerance as we've seen from the porterdown district.
The Orange Order have said there'll be no violence, there'll be no disorder, they will respect the conditions as laid down by the Commission. But are you preparing for prom for protests from the nationalist community tomorrow?
Well, if the nationalist community choose to engage in protest and if and if that's peaceful and notified and lawful as is that that is their right, then it's a matter for the PSNI to police that. Um the Port of Down district expect the police to uphold the law, um and and that that is it. There there will be no um protesting disorder, disruption or violence, then the unionist or loyalist community, the Portadown District will stick to the uh determination that the They're unhappy with the number of the conditions imposed, but they will they will stick to it as they have done for twenty eight years, fifty two Sundays a year, I think over thirteen hundred determinations with which they venomously disagreed, but they complied with each and every one of them, um so they will do so again uh tomorrow.
