The Pomp And Joe Show

11AM - Do you like 3-on-3 hockey in overtime Joe loves it, but Austin doesn't; Bob joins his show as we talk NBC's broadcast and Connor Hellebuyck

Chapter 1: What was Sidney Crosby's motivation for not playing in the Olympics?

0.47 - 18.371 Unknown

Here's the other thing I'm thinking about, Limits, is now I really, and I can't believe I would be alone in this, want to see Sid's career have one more hurrah, and it's incumbent upon the team now, here, to help him get that, right?

0

19.773 - 28.063 Austin

Oh, yeah, and that's, I wonder if that was part of his reasoning as to why he ultimately didn't play. One last run, one last chance with the Penguins, he doesn't want to compromise that.

0

28.634 - 52.178 Unknown

I wonder. I tend to think it was more about can I help this team right now on this day? I mean, let's be honest. It was one of the biggest hockey games of all time. I don't know what his thinking may have been that may have factored into it. But I tend to think at least that it was just like, am I going to be a help or a hindrance to my country today on this day?

0

52.158 - 77.185 Unknown

And like I said, I think he – and there were a couple of columns to this effect – very smartly and unselfishly came to the conclusion that I'm not going to be able to help enough here. And maybe it would even go in the opposite direction. But now, once he gets well here, it's incumbent on the Penguins to try to make a little run. Not just because of him.

0

77.245 - 94.326 Unknown

I'm not going to say I think they have a great chance in the East, but they do have 70 points. And the number one team, Carolina, Tampa, have 78. So they're eight back, two back of the Canadians. They've shot the third best record in the East right now.

Chapter 2: Why is the three-on-three overtime format controversial?

94.366 - 122.445 Unknown

A decent shot at that. I don't know if you have that now. They could also drop. I get that, especially without Sid. But when you have the chance at the basically the three seed. Then you have a chance, especially if you add at the deadline. Those are just. That's common sense, right? They have a chance as they as they are constructed right now.

0

122.628 - 146.258 Unknown

I see them probably at best, they upset somebody in the first round, but they could add. I'm not saying go crazy for a rental player or anything like that. I'm saying help your hockey team. Who knows what could happen? Somebody could upset Tampa early on, and then it's as wide open as the AFC was this year. My God, it's not exactly a stocked playoff field.

0

146.278 - 149.206 Unknown

The Sabres are in it right now, for God's sakes. Limits.

0

151.071 - 151.893 Austin

Sure, that makes you happy.

0

152.053 - 173.01 Unknown

They have 70 points in 57 games. If the Sabres aren't in it, it can't be stocked. So I think it's pretty wide open in the East. I really do. Tampa's by far the best team, in my opinion. I know they're tied with Carolina. Carolina always finds a way to not get it done in the playoffs. It's Tampa, and then it's everybody else, and you know how the hockey playoffs go.

173.751 - 196.838 Unknown

Why couldn't the Penguins make a little run? So that's one thing I'm thinking about. And the other is the three-on-three format from yesterday. Okay. When it first became apparent to me in these Olympics that that was happening, I was like, that's the bad way to end an Olympic hockey game. But you know what?

Chapter 3: How did NBC's broadcast team perform during the Olympic hockey games?

196.858 - 228.049 Unknown

It grew on me. And as I mentioned the other day when this topic came up, Even though I'm cynical these days about lots of things, when it comes to sports, I'm hardly a traditionalist or a purist. I just want to be entertained at this point. Just entertain me. And what's more entertaining than that? Yeah, so the format changes. There's two fewer guys on the ice. So what? Figure it out and go win.

0

230.29 - 262.893 Unknown

World Cup decided by penalty kicks. Figure it out and go win. That's what I say. And it's wildly, wildly entertaining. There's not too many things in sports more entertaining than three on three. Do you have a problem with it out there? And I realize because the U.S. won, it's probably harder to have a problem with it, right? But you still might. Limits says he still does.

0

264.016 - 296.747 Unknown

Not like the three-on-three format. I just love it. I think it's as entertaining as anything right now out there. In the NHL, it's become a little less so because teams get so defensive and puck control-minded in overtime. But still, once there's a chance at one end, then all hell breaks loose. Then it's incredible. 412-928. 93 70 fan Twitter brought to you by South Hills Kia Peters Township.

Just a wicked blow to the Canadians to not have Sid. And yet and yet they play what I thought was overall a pretty dominant territorial game. And they wind up not being able to cash in on an extended 5-on-3.

0

325.547 - 334.8 Unknown

In many ways, that helped to decide the game. And the other goalie was just phenomenal. That's how it goes. Let's go to the phone lines, O Limitless Wonder.

335.501 - 339.367 Austin

Joe, I realize that you never gave the weather last hour. Would you mind doing that, please?

339.527 - 346.377 Unknown

Yes, I didn't. Snow today and a high of 32. Frank O'Harris, a low of Calvin Austin, a low of 19.

Chapter 4: What impact does the Olympic win have on USA Hockey?

347.183 - 365.509 Unknown

Fan weather is brought to you by Secure Money Advisors. I'm going to take a guess, Limits, and you tell me if I'm right. I'm going to say it's 27 degrees, maybe 31. What is it? Tired of this weather and want to retire in Florida? Let Secure Money Advisors help plan your retirement. What do you got? It's 32 degrees. Pretty close, wasn't I?

0

365.649 - 368.854 Austin

And here is Paul in Wexford to chime in on the topic. Hey, Paul, what's up?

0

369.779 - 393.968 Unknown

Hi, Joe. Hi, Austin. Love the program, and you guys make my day every day, so thanks. Appreciate it. Joe, I agree with you on the three-on-three. You know, on May 4, 2000, I was at that Philadelphia Penguin game until 2.30 in the morning, five overtimes, when Keith Primo shot a goal past Ron Tugnut, and both my son and my heart almost fell out.

0

393.988 - 413.903 Unknown

Then I had to drive all the way home to the North Hills, and then end up having to get up at 6.30 in the morning for work. It was tough. So a lot of these playoff games can go on just about forever. And, you know, I like the full period of 20 minutes that they were going to play yesterday, but the three-on-three just makes it so much more exciting.

0

Chapter 5: How did Connor Hellebuyck contribute to Team USA's victory?

414.243 - 434.135 Unknown

Would you like to see it in the NHL playoffs, Paul? I would. You know, just for that reason, Joe. I mean, I've seen so many games of it years ago, four, five, Periods. It just goes on and on forever. I think that night was five hours on May 4th. Yeah, that was unusual. That was crazy. That was actually memorable.

0

434.175 - 462.358 Unknown

I've always been of a mind like some of the most memorable games I've seen, to be honest, are that one. penguins capitals that went a million overtimes the one year um you know 18 19 inning pirate games syracuse yukon going six overtimes those games can be memorable they can i want to be entertained i i really do and and how about we compromise and i appreciate the call paul thank you sure

0

462.338 - 489.291 Unknown

limits will you compromise with me on nhl playoffs we'll go 10 minutes at the start of overtime five on five five minutes four on four and five minutes three on three and we'll do the same thing in the second overtime period will you at least go there with me no all five on five all five on five no matter what could you imagine how stupid it would have been in the world series this year in game seven after the dodgers tied it and sent it to extras if they would have put a runner on second base

0

489.524 - 492.268 Austin

No, I think it would have been great. I think it would have been horrendous.

0

492.308 - 496.593 Unknown

That's the way they play in the regular season. Why change the rules?

496.814 - 499.677 Austin

Because the postseason is a sacred ground of the playoffs.

499.697 - 502.481 Unknown

Sacred ground. Entertain me. Entertain me, please.

502.501 - 505.525 Austin

It's ridiculous. Here is David in the North Hills.

507.027 - 529.369 Unknown

Hey, guys. It's funny. I was at that same Flyers overtime game as your last caller, and I also drove back to the North Hills. But on yesterday's game, Did the first goal by that Doug Boldy with that amazing thing where he split the two defensemen and popped the puck up in the air on a stick, did that at all remind us of the Mario goal that they built the statue for?

Chapter 6: What were the criticisms of Team Canada after their loss?

529.788 - 554.163 Unknown

Good call. I mean, it was a classic splitting of the defense that you don't see a whole heck of a lot anymore. And again, like McCarr, and was it Taves out there with him? We'll get blamed for that. Sometimes the other guys make an unbelievable play. What a great play by Boldy. It really was. That's an all-time goal. I agree. Hey, one other quick point.

0

554.664 - 575.987 Unknown

I think there may have been a goat for Canada. Just before that goal, remember, the U.S. had a three-on-one. That Canadian player did have possession and control of the puck briefly, and he had a lane to skate it behind the goal and get out of trouble. But that U.S. player took it off his stick right away, and he didn't know he was there.

0

576.327 - 586.875 Unknown

But there was an avenue to safety there, and he didn't do it good. Thanks, guys. Thank you. I sort of lost track of that, but what a nice man, huh?

0

587.696 - 594.572 Austin

Very, yes. Next. A man named Tom says he has a Ron Cook story. Would you like to hear it? Of course I would.

0

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the MVP award controversy?

594.832 - 595.654 Austin

Hello, Tom.

0

596.039 - 596.62 Joe Starkey

Well, hi.

0

596.66 - 601.428 Unknown

How you doing, Joe and Limits? Wow, what a voice. You have a radio voice. You ever been on the radio?

0

601.628 - 606.996 Joe Starkey

Yes, I have, yeah. Where? Previously. In West Virginia, not in California.

0

607.497 - 613.787 Unknown

Can you believe this guy's voice, Limits? You make Bob Pompiani look like an amateur with this voice. Please, just talk.

613.887 - 618.795 Joe Starkey

Read the phone book. Oh, I wish I had his money. That guy's the Houston Rays. He's Mr. Pittsburgh.

618.815 - 623.042 Unknown

I'd have you read the phone book if phone books just still existed. Go ahead.

623.022 - 652.641 Joe Starkey

Well, I wanted to tell a story about... I saw Ron Cook before he left for Florida. And he was doing a promotion. It was out... Should I name the place where he was doing it? It was for the station. Okay. Well, I got into the place. And it's kind of hard not to mention it. But anyway, he wasn't around. You know, he had a big sign up there. I wanted to win. I wanted to buy some beer. So...

652.958 - 662.909 Joe Starkey

They had a big sign saying, Ron Cook's here, and he's here to greet the public. And I walked in. I didn't see him, so I was looking around for some beer, and I thought, oh. I said, where Ron Cook is.

Chapter 8: How does goaltending affect a team's success in hockey?

663.069 - 664.634 Joe Starkey

I mentioned it to an employee there.

0

664.995 - 668.089 Unknown

He went where the free beer was, but go ahead. He did.

0

668.57 - 669.732 Joe Starkey

Well, let me tell you what he did.

0

670.793 - 678.165 Unknown

I don't know if I want to hear this, Limits. Limits, how about you vet this off the air and then hear it on the air? How about that?

0

678.185 - 680.108 Austin

Is it appropriate for the air, Tom? I don't want to.

680.248 - 684.735 Unknown

We shouldn't be taking horrible shots. I trust Tom.

684.755 - 686.478 Austin

He worked in radio before.

686.758 - 692.727 Unknown

It's all in good fun when we bring up Ron's voice and things. I don't want anything detrimental to his reputation.

692.767 - 715.485 Joe Starkey

Is this detrimental to Ron's reputation? No, it just shows you just kind of what he was like. I couldn't find him, and so they had to ask for him over the PA system. They announced, you know, Ron Cook, you know, just report up to the front. He was kind of like hiding. He was kind of like in a corner secluded. He didn't want to mix with the public, I can tell. He was right off as a parent.
