One of the guys that we brought up in conversation earlier before we get to the back half of this six-pack.
The Dolphins are reportedly signing former Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert to a one-year deal. Tolbert, not really a star by any means, not really close to it. He was kind of a lower-tier wide receiver that I thought maybe Pittsburgh brings in, guy that had previous relationship with Mike McCarthy. In four years, he only had 10 touchdowns and about 1,100 yards. So it's not like a big loss, but that's just a little piece of NFL news that came down in the last few minutes. All right, Austin, let's crack one. So we went through three things earlier that were football-related. These are all going to be baseball news. And we will start with Connor Griffin. We had Noah Hiles on earlier in the show. And the quote that stood out to me from that discussion with Noah was about Connor Griffin.
And he said, quote, I can't see any logic for him starting the season in AAA. Austin, I believe you were somebody that was in favor of him starting the season in the minor leagues, correct? That is correct. Has that changed at all since spring training started? Maybe you got a little case of the bucko flu and you thought, you know what, let's just have this guy start in the majors. It shifted a little bit when he hit two home runs in one game and absolutely mashed those baseballs at the Red Sox spring training facility over their version of the monster. But I still feel at the same time, Donnie, for him to accomplish a feat that has not been done since Ken Griffey Jr. like 40 years ago, it would be a very tall task to ask for Connor Griffin to do that.
So I think the Skeens plan is probably the best one for the Pirates in this instance, considering he's never played more than 21 games above high A. Just 21 games in AA last year, no games in AAA. He's still just 19 years old, never played college ball. Well, Connor Griffin is going to be a great player. He is. I just don't want them to rush him as well. And maybe rush a good thing. I want to see him too. Don't get me wrong. But I think maybe being a little bit conservative with him. Let him see more AAA pitching. Bring him up in May. You added so many pieces to your lineup this year to counteract losing games because Connor Griffin is not on your team. I think he'll be a big reason why they win games, but I don't think not having him for the first month when there are still some off days and you're still a healthy team with all your guys is going to significantly hurt them.
Yeah, you don't have to have this kid come up and count on him right away to be a star. I think that benefits him significantly. Think of some of the ugly Pirates teams we have seen in the last five, almost ten years. And they would call a guy up and he would have such, I don't want to say the expectations were unfair because they should be high for somebody like this. But I always think the time that Cole Tucker and Brian Reynolds came up around the same time is kind of funny. Same game. I was at that game. Cole Tucker homered to center field in that game. Yes, and Cole Tucker is the former first-round pick we all get excited about. He's the one that flames out pretty quickly, and now he's only relevant because he is married and I believe has a child with a former Disney star.
Brian Reynolds, even though he's coming off a bad season, a much, much, much better Major League Baseball player.
