What are the implications of Ryan O'Hearn's signing for the Pirates?
First question, favorite Christmas movie? Favorite Christmas movie. Ooh, I'm not a huge Christmas movie guy, but there is one, one like TV show that I watch pretty much every year. This is, this is a little childish of me, but there's a, there's a Pixar TV show called prep and landing about like the elves that prepare, um, prepare, um, Houses for Santa to get there. And that's something that I've watched ever since I was little. It's a little TV show that I've made part of my Christmas spirit. So not really a movie, but something I enjoy a lot. I like that. I like that. That's a different take, and I appreciate that. What are the Pirates getting in Ryan O'Hearn, Colin? They're getting a capable major league hitter is the shortest way to say it.
They got better is the overall take. Ryan O'Hearn last year had a 281 batting average, 17 homers, 63 RBIs, left-handed bat who profiles well at PNC Park. And he's a guy that you can put into the lineup in a whole bunch of different spots and will help make the guys around him better. He's someone who gets a lot of hits. He walks a lot. He gets on base. He's someone that doesn't strike out a whole ton. It's something It's a guy who's just going to help the Pirates in their quest to become just a major league average offense, because that's all you need with the pitching staff. He's not necessarily someone that's going to hit 50 home runs every single year. His career high, I believe, was 17, but... He's a guy who's just a quality, quality hitter who will help the Pirates get better offensively.
Is it safe to say that they kind of went big with Schwarber and when that didn't work out, they said, hey, let's take that money that we were going to spend on one guy and let's go get multiple guys. Has that kind of been the pivot in philosophy here? Yeah, exactly. I'm not going to say they're trying to recreate Schwarber in the aggregate because I wouldn't say that's fully accurate, but they realized that they had a number of holes to fill this offseason. They needed some upgrades at DH. They needed some lefty power. They needed a couple of guys who can raise the floor of the offense. And I think they've gotten that with Brandon Lau and Brian O'Hearn. Is it safe to say that Hearn maybe kind of made himself more appealing given the season that he had against lefties last year?
Because career-wise, the number's not great against lefties, but last year he was actually a very capable hitter against left-handed pitching. Oh, absolutely. Hearn, he's someone who hasn't been... a major league star for a long time. He's coming off the best season of his career in 2025, 2.4 war. That's, that's a career high for him. And he's been playing his best baseball in the last two years. I would say that how his, how effective he was against lefties is a big factor. I'd expect him to against left-handed pitchers, be the pirates first baseman, which means that you don't have to use Spencer Horowitz against lefties. And we struggled a lot there. so I think that they'll get creative with how they get O'Hearn in the lineup I expect him to be close to an everyday player and because he hits lefties well that gives you options at first that lets him be kind of a platoon partner with Spencer Horwitz even though they're both lefties is he a DH candidate as well and how do you feel like the DH position will will factor in for the Pirates here I'm expecting it to be DH by committee I don't think that
