Sean, you had speculated that maybe they're just looking at future applications of the fan code of conduct while letting this guy slide. Doesn't sound like that's the case here. So... This is what Florio has said a little while ago on Pro Football Talk. It may be a first. The NFL disputes a report from the media outlet owned and operated by the NFL. On Tuesday night, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported that the NFL and the Lions will not take action against the fan involved in the altercation with DK Metcalf on Sunday in Detroit because there was, quote, no violation of the fan code of conduct per source.
On Wednesday morning, the NFL said otherwise. Quote, the report about the fan and discipline was not accurate, an NFL spokesperson told PFT via email. The matter remains under review and the league is following up with the club. So this adds a whole new wrinkle in this, Sean, don't call me Seth Meyers. We now have the NFL saying that one of their own reporters was wrong. So did he go rogue? Yeah, I mean, that's a great question. How does one of your own reporters not have the right information here? And this is obviously a significant thing. I wonder, I don't know, did the backlash of this coming out kind of put the NFL on alert? Did the NFLPA perhaps get involved in this? I would have to think that the NFLPA is involved in this.
That the NFLPA is saying, hey, you cannot set a standard that a guy can sit in the front row and verbally harass and say the things that DK Metcalf is alleging that this guy said. And again, we haven't heard from DK Metcalf directly in this. And I kind of wish that we would, in a way. Now, there's the legal aspect of it, and maybe that's why the Steelers and Metcalf and the NFLPA are saying quiet at this point.
How did the NFL respond to the report about the fan's behavior?
But it would be nice to hear somebody come out from the Metcalf camp and say, hey, look, this guy, I heard this guy say this to me, and this is why this happened. This is why I did this. We haven't heard that directly yet. We have heard through... James Harrison, who said that he talked to DK Metcalf and Metcalf said that the guy used a derogatory word about DK Metcalf's mother and called him a racial slur. So I'm going, I'm going to believe James Harrison wouldn't put that out there. I'm going to believe that he did talk to Metcalf and this is what Metcalf said. And Chad Ochocinco said something similar. Yeah, said the same thing. But boy, if you're Metcalf, I don't know. Maybe talking to former players who now do podcasts is not the right route when you're talking about what actually happened.
Maybe, again, with Metcalf here, there's a lot of areas where he can maybe be a bit more responsible, starting with the initial action. Maybe not talking to those guys first and actually putting out a well-organized statement on what exactly happened here. Maybe that's the way to go. But, hey, it got out there regardless, and now the NFL is, I think, having to look into this.
