Chapter 1: What is discussed at the start of this section?

7.591 - 18.784 Bob Pompiani

Good morning, everyone. It is a chilly Monday morning in Pittsburgh, and you have tuned in to the Pomp and Show show. There is no Joe today, but there is a Jim, as in Colin. He's going to do a little overtime and stay.

0

18.804 - 20.686 Sean Myers

Yeah, I got nothing else to do. You said you want to stick around.

0

20.706 - 31.175 Bob Pompiani

See, that's what happened. We have a retired guy here who wants to stay. He's now back at full-time. Did you know that, Sean? Because Sean Myers is back behind the glass. Austin Becktold, like Joe, has the day off today. How are you, Sean?

0

31.695 - 37.02 Unknown

I am great, and I'm happy to see Jim sticking around as well. If it's a holiday, there's a good bet that Jim's going to be in the studio here.

0

37.28 - 42.225 Bob Pompiani

He just signed on to own a full-time contract. He hasn't told his wife yet. No, I don't even know what she's doing.

42.245 - 44.567 Sean Myers

I just know she's not home right now, so I figured what the heck.

44.547 - 64.142 Bob Pompiani

Well, we have a lot to get into today, Jim, here, beginning with our Off the Top, which is presented by J.P. Roofing and Siding. We have a rundown of what we're going to do, and most of it will be NFL football. Given all the things that have happened, I do want to get into baseball economics. I do want to get into the Penguins, who begin a big four-game road trip.

64.162 - 66.185 Sean Myers

I'll be gone by the time you do that. That's fine.

66.786 - 88.157 Bob Pompiani

You'll be here for a segment. It'll help me out. But let's begin with the news of the day. Sean McDermott is out of a job in Buffalo, and that makes 10 firings or however you do it, 10 teams that were in need of head coaches. Two of them have been filled with the hardball going to the Giants and then Stefanski to Atlanta. But I want to talk a little bit about the Bills.

Chapter 2: Why was Sean McDermott fired from Buffalo?

211.685 - 230.817 Bob Pompiani

I'm going to just ask you this. Do you remember the game with Baltimore? The Isaiah likely play? No. Well, that too. That's another one that was a catch. Sorry, it was. The one that Rodgers gets tipped, it's up in the air. It comes down. He catches it. They rule interception because it was taken away from him. But then they reversed it and said his knee was down.

0

231.623 - 243.579 Sean Myers

So you're saying that would be the same argument with the Cooks play that he had the ball because his knee was down. You get into that whole stuff about surviving the ground and all that stuff. It's like government.

0

243.599 - 247.364 Bob Pompiani

They put too much of it in, and so therefore no one knows what the hell's in and out.

0

247.564 - 263.686 Sean Myers

Since we kind of skipped all over that, there was a catch that Mims made for Denver. Denver. I didn't think that was a catch. I thought they showed that over in the end zone where he rolled over and the ball hit the ground. They didn't make a big deal out of that.

0

263.746 - 288.899 Sean Myers

At some point, I don't know, but I remember before they had replay, I'm thinking to myself, they've got to put replay in because they're missing some obvious calls. But my goodness, the way everything gets slowed down and you go, you know, almost like it's like the Zubruder film, you know, Kennedy's assassination. You slow everything down from different angles.

288.919 - 295.407 Sean Myers

You look at it and it just there's almost so much information that you can't come to a conclusion sometimes.

295.988 - 305.942 Bob Pompiani

Yeah. And I think they've made it so complicated that they don't even know. And that's why you get all these different calls. Survive the ground. Did he complete the catch by making two and a half steps?

Chapter 3: How do officiating discrepancies impact game outcomes?

306.542 - 326.9 Bob Pompiani

Come on now. Normally, if you get in the end zone, I'll go back to the likely one. If you get into the end zone, you make the catch, you take two steps. They're going to call that a touchdown. At least they should. It's about crossing the plane. He did. And how is that different than going to the back of the end zone where you make a catch? Right? And then you just drop the ball. He didn't move.

0

327.241 - 334.43 Bob Pompiani

Did he complete a catch? I don't know. Are you supposed to make two steps if there are no steps available to make? Sean, help me out here.

0

334.45 - 339.878 Unknown

Well, I have someone who will help us out for sure that wants to chime in. Oh. Is this?

0

341.48 - 345.445 Jim Colony

Bob, this is an outrage. Oh, my goodness. And the bill got ripped off again by the officials.

0

345.465 - 352.034 Bob Pompiani

It's John and Jefferson. John and Jefferson, how are you? Allison Altoona. Thomas and Jefferson.

352.054 - 352.114

Oh.

353.258 - 354.88 Bob Pompiani

That was a ripoff. I'm sorry, Joe.

355.842 - 367.638 Jim Colony

It was a catch. They think it's different from the Rodgers thing. It was the exact same thing because here's the deal. And I'm driving home from my daughter's volleyball tournament. How are you, Jim?

367.978 - 372.385 Sean Myers

I'm good, Joe. Thank you very much. Nice job coaching, by the way. Big win for you on Friday afternoon.

Chapter 4: What is the confusion surrounding the catch rule in the NFL?

477.461 - 479.784 Jim Colony

I'm sorry, Bob, to hijack the show.

0

479.924 - 501.694 Bob Pompiani

You're not. It's your show. It's your show, Joe. We're just here holding placeholders. But I agree. I think now here's the thing that my question first came up when I heard this news about Sean McDermott is, okay, if John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski knew that this Buffalo job would be open, would they have hesitated to make their decision to go to where they went?

0

502.855 - 519.818 Jim Colony

Absolutely. It's it's despite the GM, who is a major problem. I think it might be the greatest coach job opening in NFL history, is it not? You have a guy in his 20s who's a top five, maybe quarterback already all time, certainly top 10.

0

520.675 - 543.638 Sean Myers

You know, it's not unprecedented for a head coach to resign after he's already accepted the job. Bill Belichick had taken the job to be the coach of the Jets. He infamously resigned on a cocktail napkin that said, I hereby resign as HC of the NYJ. And then he went on to become the coach of the Patriots instead. And I don't know, could Stefanski resign? Pull something like that?

0

543.839 - 545.262 Sean Myers

Wouldn't a hard block do that?

545.482 - 565.38 Bob Pompiani

I don't know. You would blackball yourself, I think, with any other potential jobs down the road. I mean, I don't know. All I know is that this has gotten crazy here. And I really thought because the game was competitive and they lost it, not so much because... they deserve to lose because the officials, I thought, cost them the game. That's how I interpret that. I'm sorry.

565.44 - 574.189 Bob Pompiani

I know that officials shouldn't have that. But they had their fingerprints all over this, and I don't know if I'd blame the coach for that. And as you said, Joe, Allen was the worst form of himself.

575.47 - 597.762 Jim Colony

Yeah, I mean, like I said, all you want in that situation on the road against the top seed is let us have Jordan with the ball in the last shot, and that's what he had in overtime. In fact, that's what he had in regulation. And he missed Kincaid for a touchdown at the end of regulation. And then he didn't get it done in overtime. And at the end of the half, he lost his mind.

598.483 - 620.119 Jim Colony

But that wasn't coaching. In fact, Sean McDermott, I think, did a great job in these playoffs. They had a great win at Jacksonville. And these other coaches, I don't know, when Belichick and others have suddenly reversed course, it happened within hours. It would look horrible for John Harbaugh to suddenly resign.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of Sean McDermott's firing for the Bills?

4822.822 - 4835.515 Jim Colony

And, and kind of that culture that he knows where we start running, you know, running the football, that, that hard nose defense. And unfortunately, you know, we have to find essentially a different version of him. And I do think Shula is that I, hopefully that is the pick, but,

0

4835.798 - 4852.504 Jim Colony

I just hope that we can get the turnaround that, because like I said, if the Patriots can do it and with what they've done and also don't forget to their last playoff win before, you know, this year was in 2019. So they've been in the same boat as us for the most part. And if they can turn around as quick as they can, then why can't we?

0

4852.624 - 4871.435 Jim Colony

And I also say to message to Steeler nation, if it continues to be kind of this, just continue with the way and continue with everything. We need to continuously put pressure on ownership and, because it's been way too long to celebrate a playoff win or a Super Bowl. We're supposed to be the standard of the franchise, and once again, the Patriots seem to get that upper hand again.

0

4872.036 - 4888.89 Bob Pompiani

Thank you, Nico, for the call. Mike Rabel's done a very good job there, but he also inherited a nice quarterback, and I think it all starts there. I don't know that he probably would have taken that job just because he's New England and good friends with Kraft, but if they didn't have a quarterback, I don't know. That's not as impressive as a job in terms of the challenge.

0

4889.451 - 4893.675 Bob Pompiani

Drake May was identified as someone they liked. They got him. what did they pick him? Third overall.

Chapter 6: How does the coaching landscape affect the Steelers' future?

4893.795 - 4895.657 Bob Pompiani

Was that the third overall?

0

4895.797 - 4899.121 Unknown

I think it was Williams, Daniels, and then may. So that's pretty good.

0

4899.222 - 4914.861 Bob Pompiani

What do you think about this year's class, by the way, aside from Mendoza? I don't know. I mean, some quarterbacks will be taken. Alabama's probably going to tie. Simpson's coming back. Isn't he? Is he? I saw a $7 million NIL. You can check that out. I thought he was going to return to Alabama. Um,

0

4915.432 - 4924.904 Unknown

I've never been a big proponent of, no, he's in the draft. Is he? He is. I mean, I guess technically maybe he could reverse course.

0

Chapter 7: What are the challenges of quarterback development in the NFL?

4924.924 - 4927.007 Bob Pompiani

If he finds out, depending on where he's going to be drafted.

0

4927.768 - 4937.18 Unknown

I was never high on Drew Aller. I know Austin, who's typically in this seat, was so high on him. I never saw him as a slam dunk first round guy.

0

4938.001 - 4940.184 Bob Pompiani

But would you take him in the second round?

0

4940.204 - 4958.888 Unknown

No. Third round? getting warmer. I guess it depends on how he looks during his workout. I think he will, when he is healthy, test very well because that's never been the issue. Some of the accuracy and touch and diagnosing has been an issue. The physical tools are outstanding, but

0

4958.868 - 4966.759 Unknown

It's tough because it almost starts to feel like after Mendoza, which I'm with you, I don't think he's a slam dunk future NFL star. Some people think that.

Chapter 8: How does officiating inconsistency impact NFL games?

4967.24 - 4985.044 Unknown

I don't know. It's so hard to gauge because he has the personality, but is he a little bit of a one-year wonder? I don't know. But I do think that beyond that, you're probably reaching for any other quarterbacks. And it felt like that last year because Dart was pretty clearly the number two. And then after that, it seemed like anyone else

0

4985.935 - 4995.153 Unknown

you didn't really know that they were going to be a true NFL starter. And I feel like that's the same about this draft. You might only get one or two guys who become NFL starters from this draft to quarterback.

0

4995.173 - 5013.804 Bob Pompiani

We have made the point about quarterbacks who have not had good starts to their careers going to situations that made them better. One of them could be Malik Willis. You know, he's in Green Bay where he has Matt LaFleur, and all of a sudden, the times we've seen him this year, and they've been limited, but he looks like a different quarterback than he was in Tennessee.

0

5014.505 - 5036.66 Bob Pompiani

So the question then, and I'll throw it out there to anyone at 412-928-9370, and you too, Sean, if you had a chance to get him for a fourth-round pick, would you make a deal? What's his contract situation? I don't know that off the top of my head. But it can't be all that much. He's still on the first rookie contract, I believe.

0

5037.02 - 5048.496 Unknown

Yeah, so I'm intrigued by him. I just don't want you to feel like you're then locked in with him and not going to consider potentially other options.

5048.516 - 5067.76 Bob Pompiani

Well, this signing or this trade may happen after. If you don't get what you want in the draft and you're still looking for somebody, that could fit the bill. That's all I'm suggesting. And what would the price be? It looks like he's a UFA, if I'm saying this correct. I thought it was a deal that had to be made. If he's a UFA, then it's even better. You can determine whatever it is.

5067.8 - 5070.085 Bob Pompiani

Now, the question is, how much would you pay him?

5070.125 - 5079.325 Unknown

Does he want term? Maybe there's a few teams that also look at him as a potential starter, and you get into a little bit of a bidding war, which I don't think that it would be a massive...

5079.305 - 5092.124 Unknown

Again, I heard maybe comparable to Justin Fields this past offseason where he ends up with the Jets, and the Steelers didn't seem like they wanted to spend that much, and maybe they were proven right because Fields certainly did not look good.
