What is the main challenge of digitalizing shipping data and why does it matter?
Welcome to Industry Optimized, the AVB podcast. I'm Fran Scott, presenter, pyrotechnician, and engineer at heart, and I am your host. And we're peeling back the curtain behind the scenes of automation, electrification, and digitalization to discover how they enable our everyday life, often without us even knowing. And as we continue to digitalize operations and A massive amount of data is being collected. But how can we actually benefit from all this data? Well, one industry that's utilizing data in digital solutions is shipping. And as an industry, it emits around 2% to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. And shipping companies are under growing pressure to not only cut emissions, but also cut costs, while also improving operational performance.
But how do digital tools complement rather than replace human decision-making in complex maritime operations? And how can that help shipping performance? To help us get our heads around this, I have got a great guest joining me who knows all about how technology and humans can cooperate within the shipping industry. Jesper, please introduce yourself.
My name is Jesper Løgström and I'm the CEO of Oversea Fleet Support AB. Oversea is a service for active vessel performance management. So we help ship managers and ship owners and long-term charters to operate their vessels and the onboard systems with high energy efficiency and reliability. Of course to reduce cost but also to reduce emissions. and to keep them low, day after day and year after year. Active here means that we go all the way from identifying improvement potentials to proactively recommending concrete actions to our clients, what to do to improve vessel performance. And then we collaborate with the clients, help them to execute the actions. And last but not least, we follow up on the effect.
And to do this, we have experienced former chief engineers and masters working in our fleet support centers that is collaborating with the clients to turn data into insights, but more importantly, turn the insights into actions to realize improvements.
So when you say improving vessel performance, what exactly are you looking for there? What are you making better?
Our aim is to cover the key areas affecting vessel performance, like hull and propeller fouling, engine tuning and efficiency. condition-based engine maintenance, electric power production and also the trim optimization. So basically the key areas that drives fuel consumption, energy consumption etc. We don't necessarily go into the specifics of the cargo hold but try to address the key areas affecting vessel performance.
Understood. And if I've got this right, Oversea, they offer what's known as a fleet support centre as a service, don't they? So could you expand a little bit on how that service works in practice, please?
It means that it's more than a system. It's the combination of an advanced digital solution, as well as support from experts in a center, collaborating with the clients, providing concrete, proactive recommendations to the clients with the aim to improve the vessel performance. So it's both system and a service, like a holistic offering.
Interesting. So it's kind of like dial an expert, you know, ask a friend, isn't it? It's like giving you the data, but also then giving you the next step that that data suggests you should do. So it's giving you the interpretation of the data, correct?
We really want to help the clients to realize the improvements, to go from data to insights faster. But more importantly, to go from insights to actions, because that's when the value occurs, right? That's when we can have an impact.
Absolutely. You can have all the numbers in the world, but unless they lead to you doing something, no change is going to happen, is it? Could you paint a picture for us about how this works in practice? So the digital solutions are one thing, but yes, it's converting those into action. And so how do the digital solutions, how are they communicated to these experts so they can actually put that advice into practice?
