What are the host’s main concerns about modern dog ownership and training?

Chenelle Conquest 0:00
Welcome back to the Pet Industry Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Chanel, pet industry mentor, you know, former multi-six-figure business owner. I love to say that. And someone who's incredibly passionate about raising standards across the pet industry and helping both pet owners and pet professionals make better, more educated decisions for the animals in their care. And today's Episode is one that I have been looking forward to. It's one that I was trying to get, you know, happening a little while ago. I've been waiting patiently. Um, we're talking about something that I feel impacts so many dog owners and pet professionals, and that's behavior, training, overwhelm, and the way people are being taught to approach their dogs.
Chenelle Conquest 0:48
I do think that. Social media has made dog ownership kind of simultaneously more accessible and more confusing than ever. Everyone has an opinion, everyone claims to be an expert. And I think a lot of pet owners end up feeling overwhelmed, judged, uh, or like they're somehow kind of failing if their dog isn't perfect, or if their dog's anxious, or if their dog's reactive. or barking or pulling on the lead, even simple like s um behaviors like that people are struggling with seems to be put in a spotlight that you've done the wrong thing. So one thing that really stood out to me when I met today's guest was the approach around actually understanding dogs instead of just trying to control them and using force-free methods.
Chenelle Conquest 1:41
I do think there's a huge difference between suppressing behavior and actually helping a dog feel safer, calmer, more understood, and more supported in the long term. So today I am joined by Sarah. She's the woman who dogs would thank if they could talk. And I'll be honest with you, she probably already know what they were going to say anyway. Sarah Rutton is a canine behavior specialist, best-selling author, and keynote speaker from the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Australia. And I am biased that it's beautiful here because I live here too, which is is how I was lucky enough to meet her. And she's here to change the way you think about your dog today. So Sarah, thank you so much for coming on the show today.

Okay, well, uh, as you mentioned, I'm a canine behavior specialist. I've been doing this now for over 20 years, which makes me older than I care to admit. And uh it is my absolute passion. I love Understanding dogs, I love helping their people understand them. I love watching the bond between the human and the dog blossom and bloom. And uh so much so that I wrote a best selling book and yeah, I get to hang out with dogs and people all day and you know, it's sometimes at the beach, sometimes in the park, sometimes at their home and Yeah, just it just get to To see that relationship between the two. It just makes such a difference to my life and I would love to think that I make a difference to theirs.
Chenelle Conquest 3:29
I would say that you definitely do. Would you well can you think of a pivotal oh my god, a pivotal moment in your life where you were really just like, This is the road that I absolutely must go down?
Sarah Rutten 3:45
Uh yeah, look, absolutely. I started off my working career in office management. In I was a uh sales support for a real estate agent for a really really long time. I was a legal secretary for a while. I worked as a support team for a financial advisor. So I've done a lot of office admin work and I felt like there was something missing. I felt like I wanted to to work in an industry where I just had so much passion and just loved getting up every day to to go to work and I had somebody say to me, this was really long time ago, had someone say to me, you know what, when you're trying to figure out what it is that you want to do with your life, sit down with a piece of paper and draw a line down the center.
Sarah Rutten 4:30
And on one side, write down all of the things that you love. And on the other side, write down all of the things that you're good at.
