ReadyServices.com. Second half of the program begins right now as we talk to Sam McDowell, columnist for the Kansas City Star, joins us here in the program as he is wanting to do. Usually we do it on a Tuesday, but flip-flopping between he and Blair Kirkhoff, we... You know, we don't want to go a week without getting a chance to talk to Sam McDowell.
So, you know, we did what we had to do, people. Survive and advance is what we're talking about. We advanced to Sam McDowell here in the program. Sam, how are you, buddy?
I'm doing well. How are you doing?
Well, I'll be doing better when your mic's on. Got to figure out which mic it is, Kyle. It's all right. I'm going to keep banging into everything. Which one do you want him on? This one. Why does it matter? Am I on? What's wrong with that one? One of them's a little bit quieter than the other. They're brand new! I thought we got past this when we put in new mics. Does that really matter?
I mean, that's... Well, I'd just like to be able to... I can't believe we just put in new mics and we got to, no, don't use that one. It sucks. The fact that it's new is like, and? Come on. Crying out loud. Come on now. Did you tell Drake? Have you told Drake?
tell drake can't get fixed unless somebody tells drake that's how it works around here let's try it again sam how are you buddy um i'm doing all right am i on yeah i don't know i think so give it one of these give one of these i think i can hear myself yeah might be maybe the uh the headphones don't work i don't know you know you never know those are yours so that's your fault yeah the headphones are great we're not we're not blaming anyone around here for that one um
First of all, we had Nate Bucati in here talking about the World Cup. I'm just curious. I just want to get your thoughts on this. Do you think the World Cup is going to disappoint here in Kansas City? In what way? I don't know. In any way. Economically, as far as attendance goes, as far as the celebration, the party, are you expecting people to come away going like, wow, that was awesome?
Well, I think all those are different questions. And I think, especially like the people here, what they're going to say, I think is a vastly different question from whether or not it disappoints economically. I guess I would say that depends on what your expectations are for it. Obviously, you know, there's there's been leadership that has projected certain expectations for it.

Chapter 2: How does Sam McDowell view the upcoming World Cup in Kansas City?
Yeah. And now, I mean, his wife is like the absolute biggest fan of sport in Kansas City. I really just think it's a it's a I think soccer in Kansas City is a cool story. That's why this this book that I'm literally holding right now that Nate wrote, I'm eager to read.
Yeah, I by the way, one of the things like talking about the hotels, like I remember looking at the VRBOs. And everyone in town, everyone's like, well, I want to rent my house. I heard they're paying like $5,000 a day. It is amazing to see how the numbers have come down. Everyone has a line through it and a new price.
I think there are some people that are like, I'm going to put $2,500 a day in and just see if somebody bites. And if they do, okay, I'll move out of my house for a month and let them do that. I get it. But it is just amazing how it's like, you know, oh, take a look at this luxury spot.
And there's a couple of my, I kind of bookmarked, and I'm like, oh, yeah, that's now like an eighth of the price that they were asking, which I get. Throw it out there, see what you can get if you don't really want to do it. But it's just interesting to see what the idea was. There's plenty of availability to VRBO if you'd like to, Sam. I've got a home here. Yeah? You going to put it out?
If anybody wants to rent Sam's home, let's be clear. They will not be plowing your street if it does snow.
If it snows this June, I would be stunned if they came down my road.
You'd be stunned if they came down your road in January, right? Yeah, any time of year, but particularly if it was... If it snows during the World Cup, there'll be a much bigger story in this town than the World Cup. Yeah, could be, could be. What is happening? Do you give the U.S. a chance to have a good showing?
Uh... Their group gives them a good chance to have an early good showing and to actually make it to the knockout, which is like anything can happen in soccer. I mean, you and I have watched enough soccer to know that the team, not only the best team, but the best team on that day is not the one that always wins. So I think that aspect is hard to predict.
I'll just say I don't think they enter this tournament in a great spot.

Chapter 3: What are the expectations for the U.S. soccer team's performance?
And maybe that actually happened here in his first stint here. And but yeah. I also thought that he was better with us yesterday because I will say the first time I asked him a question yesterday, he used the sign posted above the door, the help wanted all positions thing that we've heard so many times.
But I actually thought if you weren't distracted by the line you've heard so many times, there was a lot of freshness to him that I think he'd gotten stale, I thought, in his first stint here.
We heard less of the at the end of the day. Yeah. You know, I think he's even heard the catchphrases or the criticism.
And is he interviewing for a job anymore? I mean, I think that's part of it, too.
He's like, no, no, this job's pretty good. I've been around looking for it and what I've had to do trying to get the job. I value more what I had here. And so let's just...
focus on this yeah that's interesting i think the time apart for both parties for the person in the job that who we're talking about has allowed him to appreciate the job more but i also think for the quarterback too being away from has allowed him to uh want to be coached in that way working at a job is not necessarily the same as a dating relationship but uh when there's a breakup and a get back together does the second stint usually last shorter the same or longer
I don't know. Is it? Yeah. Statistically? You remember real fast.
You're reminded why.
Is that analytically based? No, that's personal. I need to see the fan graph state on that. That's personal experience right there. You're just like, oh, yeah, this crap. All right. How many teams have won 12 straight games in a single NBA postseason? Brought to you by Lafetta Delicatessen.
