We're going around the country, as I said. Talking to the folks. We're going to begin in Dallas, Texas. Alec Medford, 105.3 The Fan is there. Alec, how are you, sir? Doing great. How are you? Doing very good. Let's start, first of all, with the Dallas Cowboys. Pickens signs the franchise tag. Doesn't look like a long-term contract's coming, or am I missing something here?
Is this one and done for him? Is he on the trade block? What do we think this means? Yeah, so it was interesting when in the pre-draft presser with all of the brain trust for the Cowboys, Stephen Jones just up and says, yeah, we're not going to negotiate with him. He's playing on the tag. That's it. That's not the usual way that they go about business with these things.
But it was kind of refreshing in a sense that we don't have to speculate anymore. And pretty quickly we had heard that. Mulligetta, the agent, and Pickens got together and said, sure, we'll go with it, and he was planning on signing. He officially signs the tag this week. The expectation is that he plays. Everybody seems to think that he's going to be there for training camp.
He is not there for voluntary workouts here early, but everybody's expecting him to be there at training camp in Oxnard, and everybody expects him to be on the team week one, so... Any trade conversation, I would say, is just for fun and speculation. It does seem like the team is very adamant that they want him here. And for what it's worth, he really does enjoy being here.
And he has not had any kind of conversations about a trade. So it will be a one year. They just want a little bit more time to see what they've got with them. And if they like what they see, they'll pick up those conversations next year. Okay, no worry about a holdout this year from Pickens since he isn't getting the deal now? No, he seems fine.
Things could change, obviously, but it does seem like he's communicated with the team that he's okay with playing on the tag. It's a lot more money than he's ever made, and he understands the circumstances. So it does seem like things could change once we get to July, but it does sound like he's willing to play on it. All right. All right. We'll see how that goes.
We'll see how the draft goes for them. They go up and they go down. First of all, at pick number 12, they go up to 11 to get Caleb Downs. I think everybody agrees. Best safety in the class. They have needs on defense. I assume everybody's on board with that move. 100 percent. You would be hard pressed to find anybody that's going to criticize that move. You had needs.
quite literally across your entire defense, whether it's edge rusher, inside linebacker, corner, safety, as you just mentioned. Caleb Downs, the great thing about him, Swiss Army knife. He's going to play in a lot of different positions. You're going to see him probably as a primary slot corner, but you're going to see him play single high.

Chapter 3: What news is coming from the Dallas Cowboys?
All right. Pretty good draft all around. So overall, everyone liked what they did in total. Those are the two first round picks. How about the total package? Yeah, total package, everybody's pretty happy.
I think the only topic of conversation that you've seen maybe some fans have is we still need help at inside linebacker, but you make that trade for Dee Winters with the 49ers, who you're going to see him play a lot. If you ask me, he had over 100 tackles last year. He's probably going to be your week one starting inside linebacker.
I know Jay Sean Barham out of Michigan, they plan on starting him at Mike to start rookie minicamp as well. So he's going to get some looks there.
Chapter 4: What does the signing of Pickens mean for the Cowboys?
But overall, everybody's pretty happy with this class. And I would not be shocked if they're not done necessarily looking for inside linebacker help in terms of veterans. I think there might be a couple trade options that they're still laying. How about the Dallas Mavericks? Let's talk about them. First of all, the Rookie of the Year comes in. They got that with Cooper Flagg.
He set some amazing records. Do they feel like this will be the last time they're watching the playoffs on TV? Oh, yeah, for sure. And it's the way that they were able to move off of Anthony Davis and clear up a ton of other salary in the process with that trade at the deadline. They have the space and they have very limited assets. But this year, at least they do have a couple of assets to add.
They're going to have decent lottery odds where they could add one of the top players in what is a very top heavy position. draft this year, they could have some options there to add an instant impact playmaker alongside Cooper Flagg. But you have options. Kyrie Irving coming back healthy. I don't expect him to get traded. I think they want to see how that looks.
And the veteran leadership is always a plus whenever you have a teenager that's essentially the face of of your franchise, but they're going to have some money to play with. And what's interesting is we're what, 10 days away from the draft and the Mavericks still don't have an official general manager. And the word around town today has been their top target Connelly. It sounds like,
that the Timberwolves might just say, no, we're not going to let you interview them. So their top target at general manager might be off the board already. And we're just a little over a week away from the draft. So it's slightly concerning. But other than that, they're going to have some options here in free agency. Yeah. All right. We'll see what they do. Finally, the Rangers.
Wyatt Lankford on the shelf. That's not good for them. A little bit disappointing. They poured some money into this team. They thought it was going to turn the corner. But everybody in the American League sucks. Is there anybody that's really worrying about 15 and 16 right now? Yeah, there's really not a whole lot to be excited about in the American League right now.
And really, I don't have any long-term worries for Wyatt Langford. It sounded like just a minor setback. We're still, as of a couple minutes before you guys rang me up, it sounded like they were still waiting on the official diagnosis on what's going on there with his forearm. But This morning they were saying that he could play in a simulated game today or he might just need a couple extra days.
It didn't sound overly serious, but it doesn't help when he was already not off to a great start offensively. So, yeah, this offense just continues to be a mirror of itself from last season outside of the resurgence of Josh Young. In this past month, in the month of April, he was nothing but fantastic. But he was pretty much the only consistent player throughout that lineup.
And Corey Seager had himself a rough month as well. And he's really the gear that drives this machine. So... They're asking a whole lot out of their starting pitching and especially out of their bullpen, and they're just not giving run support. So, really, it's just a repeat of last season at this point.

Chapter 5: How did the Cowboys perform in the recent draft?
I mean, he's been in the system, or he was in the Diamondbacks system like 11 years ago, and he played a little bit and really couldn't hit very well, and so they kept him around, but then they would send him down. He ended up on a couple different teams, came back, back to the minors.
We were asking General Manager Mike Hazen about a week ago, and he was like, yeah, I think he has a lifetime contract. We just didn't even realize it. And they've liked him for a while. They like his versatility, but he's really always struggled to hit, and he's
now three three games away from tying the franchise record set by Luis Gonzalez for the longest hitting streak in Diamondbacks history all right finally the Phoenix Suns swept uh where are they the owner you know stepping up saying we're not trading uh Devin Booker he's gonna be standing next to me when we win a championship I mean that sounds great I'm happy to hear that uh when it's when it's there on the stage but I also think it
It could and maybe should be lip service towards saying, you know what, this mix isn't going to work. And the only way we're going to start, you know, getting the kind of draft assets that teams like the Thunder have used to kind of regroup and rebuild things is by moving our stars. What do you think the real future is for the Suns after being swept by the Thunder?
Well, I don't think they'll move Booker because Ishby has been pretty consistent with stuff like that. And he's been consistent with Booker really since day one. And I do think he believes they're going to win a championship. And we're talking about this today, like he says that and we all kind of roll our eyes.
But then we're like, well, a year ago, he said, you know, just doing this and that is going to take them from being a team that's at the bottom of the league to suddenly making the playoffs. And it actually happened. That said, their roster as it's currently constructed is not built to win a championship when they're in the same conference as Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
I don't know if there's anything they could do to get ahead of those teams in the next couple years anyway. So they're going to have to... figure something out. Their best trade chip, honestly, might be Jalen Green, which is tough to say because when he got to play with Booker, he was pretty good in the play-in, at least.
And he missed the first 50 games of the year, so everybody's kind of just wondering what he is. So it's going to be interesting to see what they do this offseason because they're going to have to make some sort of move, but it doesn't sound like it's going to be Booker.

Every time you watch him play ā He can score, but he passes so well. He sets guys up. I kind of joked a couple weeks ago. It may have been a little further back than that after they had the McDonald's All-American game.
The lob dunk is going to return to Mizzou Arena, and a lot of it is going to be Jason Crowe lobbing it up to Bryson Tiller and Tony Bryant and whoever else because he can put the ball right on the rim. So, so skilled. So easy for him. Bryant, obviously, to me, isn't the talent. that Crowe is, but he's pretty damn good. He's a 6'10 kid who can shoot.
He actually can shoot a little bit from outside.
