Why has this team been playing so good?
So it's funny you say that, Seren, because I had this whole conversation today on my show about how someone should feel about the Padres right now. And ultimately, I couldn't really decide. So I'll tell you what, I got four numbers that have me worried for the Padres and one number that has me excited about them. The one number that has me excited about the Padres, they're 24 and 16.
They have a phenomenal record. They're tied atop the NL West. You're 40 games into the season. You're 24 and 16. That's great. Here are the four numbers that worry me for the Padres. They have 24 wins this year. 12 of them are come from behind late inning wins. Manny Machado is hitting 191 so far on the season. They just split a series with the St.
Louis Cardinals where they got 14 hits over four games, which is Unbelievable and pitiful at the same time. And then Fernando Tatis Jr. had zero home runs on the year. His bat actually has hit one home run because Nick Castellanos used Fernando's bat in the ninth inning yesterday. And Fernando Tatis Jr. 's glove has allowed one inside the park grand slam.
So those are the numbers that worry me, the numbers that get me excited about the Padres. I still don't really know what this team is, Soren.

Okay, so what do they do? If they remain in contention, will they add? Is the ownership willing to put some more money into this payroll if they find themselves still right there neck and neck with the Dodgers come July?
What a great question. It's a new ownership for the Padres, which it's rare, I think, that you see a team change hands in the middle of a season. I would say if the new owners, who are Kwanzaa Jones and her husband, Jose E. Feliciano, if they want to endear themselves to Padre fans, help needs to be coming.
Because this team right now, like I said, 14 hits in a four-game series where you split it. Like, that's not sustainable over a long course of time right now. And the Padres pitching, which, again, is injured this year, has been doing incredible work. Like, Walker Bueller all of a sudden looks like an improved version of Walker Bueller from a couple years ago.
They're supposed to be getting Lucas Giolito up. He's been in the minors after having that long offseason. We'll see if he can come in and pitch. But so far, pitching is the only thing that's saving him.
All right, tell me about what's going on with Humberto Cruz, one of the Padres' top pitching prospects. Pleaded guilty in November to federal misdemeanor related to a human smuggling operation. And now, what, he's self-deported back to Mexico? What's going on in this case?
It's a weird case for sure. And I'll be honest, Seren, you kind of just laid it out there.

Chapter 3: Why are the Padres performing well despite key player struggles?
That's what we know, too. The Padres obviously aren't just giving out information on this willy nilly, but definitely is a weird situation where you see today's state of affairs. Somebody self-supporting. But he's the organization itself is kind of a no show on this entire conversation.
Wow. Interesting. So they just have no comment. Is that how they go about it?
Pretty much, yeah. It's been incredibly mummed. The Union Tribune, which is our, I think you guys have like the Kansas City Star out there, the Union Tribune in San Diego, they have an article out about it. They basically have said what you just said. In his plea agreement, Cruz acknowledged that he's a non-U.S.
citizen, and he said it would be certain that he would be deported if he didn't do it himself. So he decided to bite the bullet and do it himself.
And so is that it? Is he done as a Padre or to be determined?
It's hard for me to envision a world, unless everything gets proven false, right? It's hard for me to envision a world where the Padres wouldn't just move on from him. I know there was some excitement around him back in the day. I don't know that we've heard much in the last couple years about his future with the team. I would imagine it's done and over with.
And if we're being honest right now, the Padres are like heading into this new era, this new ownership organization, all the different things that they have to do to start doing outreach within the community. You would think they have some bigger fish to fry right now, but it is for sure a weird, weird situation and one that I'm not really used to covering.
All right, so tell me, by the way, because I hated the Padres City Connect uniforms from the past.

Chapter 4: What challenges does the new ownership face with the Padres?
You don't get it if you don't ask.
Well, I think if the Browns were better, like we were wondering, like, hey, when he was unsigned this past offseason, like, is he going to make his way out into free agency? Like, does the guy want to go back to Ohio? And so we were kind of wondering that before they got that deal buttoned up and everything.
He's such a great guy. I mean, you guys know it. But, I mean, I remember covering him in high school when he was a quarterback and He just, you know, him and his brother, they're just, they're great ambassadors for the game. He is. And you guys, you know, it makes me a Chiefs fan when I watch him play. I got, I can't say that too loud, but you know it.
Well, we'll take it. We'll take it. Let's talk about the Cavaliers down 2-1 to the Pistons. You know, I know they're the four seed and the Pistons are the one seed, but I don't think there's really much difference between these two teams. Where was the confidence level coming into this series that the Cavs could pull the upset?
I think it was a little bit higher then because, you know, we're looking at J.B. Bickerstaff, who was here for a long time. He's coaching Detroit. And, you know, they decided they wanted to go out and get another coach, so they did. And they let J.B. go. Almost the entire staff now coaches the Pistons now. But J.B. leads the way.
He's doing a great job of making sure his guys are prepared, not only for every game, but defensively. Man, they are just so rock solid. But I think Cavalier fans saw what ā
What Pistons fans were kind of watching this year, because the Cavs had a great regular season last year and then couldn't get by Indiana in the second round, and I think a lot of fans were saying, look, look at the Pistons. They're going to have a great regular season, and it doesn't matter when you get to the playoffs. Well, apparently it does matter because they're up two games to one.
Cavs blow a 17-point lead in game three, but they come back to win. Cavs have been very good at home. They're undefeated in the playoffs. They're 5-0. at home, but they cannot win on the road. I mean, they turn the ball over left and right in Detroit, so it caused some problems.

Everyone that came over was good. He's like, what is Joe Planton doing pitching well? There was a former Brave that came over that I think you were thinking of. Chris Medlin? Chris Medlin.
