But if he can do some things, you know, phase two, remember, is there's no contact. There's no offense versus defense. So it's phase three that you get into that.
Once you start the clock, then the clock's got to be rolling. So you... You just have to evaluate what you want to do there. But he's in a position where he can do everything, I think. Andy, really, just with a big picture with Patrick, do you still have a sense of sort of the arc of his recovery as opposed to, like, what's just right in the foreground?
I mean, do you have a rough working estimate in your mind? Yeah, I know he's doing a lot of stuff right now. That's what I can give you by he is throwing the ball. And, you know, he does it on his own. So... He's not getting any trouble here. Do you have video on him? I don't have video.

Chapter 3: How is Lucas Erceg handling his role in the bullpen?

The Chiefs moved up in round five to get Emmitt Johnson running back from Nebraska. A lot of people really excited about it. Andy Reid said today that Johnson can do everything well.
First of all, he's got a good feel for things, smart kid, good kid. And he's got that lateral quickness. I mean, we have LaShawn McCoy here for a bit. He's got a little bit of that to him where he can shift gears and still get himself upfield quickly. I like the way he pass protect. I like the way he catches the football. And it looks like he can do that here. We're not doing live stuff.
But the catching part, he does easy. Probably most of all, I mean, just like his smarts. He's going to help on special teams, too. So Dave has him in that up-back position on the punt team. And Dave will make all the calls and get guys going in the right direction. How much of his receiving ability did he have? You know, it's important in this offense that you're able to catch the ball.
You've got to be able to block, and he showed that. At the same time, you've got to be able to run the ball. So the more you can do, we'll utilize you in those areas. And it puts pressure on the defense.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of the Royals' aggressive base running strategy?
They get 4-2. So now where's the confidence level headed into this big seven-game homestand with the Guardians and Tigers? You got to feel pretty good.
The Mariners, the record is not great. They're three under 500 now because the Royals beat them three in a row. They'd won six of seven, though, coming into that series. This was not a there's a good team playing well. And I think the Mariners are still a good team. They were three innings away from the World Series last year. They were up in the seventh inning in game seven of the ALCS.
And this is a it's a very talented team. Good pitching. The offense, theoretically, should be good. The defense, we saw some good and bad from them. But I think that's a good team that was playing well, and the Royals came in, and they were the better team for three days. That's really encouraging. Now, division games are different. Cleveland has done well against the Royals.
The Royals have been okay at home against both Cleveland and Detroit. So I don't think that there's a whole lot of ā
panic on their end but that they've not matched up especially well with either of these two teams a lot of the time and you go you look forward to the weekend it looks like they're going to get skubal and valdez which that's a that's a tough tough sled that's a that's why the tigers went out and got valdez because now they don't just have skubal to deal with they've got him as well um and the royals have had their issues with the lefties it's been better recently but still not good
I feel confident, though. I feel good. I will go back. Last week on the show, I said, would you take seven and six in the next 13 games? I'll ask you, would you take seven and six now, now that they're four and two to start it?
Probably because of the pitching matchup you said. Yeah. Probably. I would take it. Would I adore it? I don't love it. Would I love it? Would I cherish it? Would I nurture it? Would I water it every day? No. Send it to college. Yeah. Maybe not.
Maybe it wouldn't be your baby.
But would I take it? Yes, because I felt like the six-game road trip, if it was just because we did talk about that in the ā four in a row and five out of six, Curtis and I talked about that they weren't necessarily playing that great of baseball, right?

You know, but do you buy into them much? Like right now on fan graphs, the Royals are what? Win the division 13%, clinch a bye 5%, 16% to clinch the wild card, 29% to make the playoffs, win the World Series 1%. Right. Do you think that's accurate or do you think that this is I think those are fun, but they're like so wildly like to your point, if they go five and two, they're going to skyrocket.

So if the Royals would just slip in front of the Guardians, they'd probably be the team. They'd go up six percent. to win the division. The playoff odds right now for the Guardians are 37%, so only 9% more than the Royals. So I guess, you know...
I don't know. I just feel like they ebb and flow so much with just a week. How much can we really put into them?
Especially early because the way they work is they're going based on what we've seen and what we thought we'd see before the season.
Do we know when ā sorry to interrupt you, but we talk about this with Gary Parish all the time in college basketball on the Ken Palms, that there's a point in the season where Ken Palm finally drops off ā Everything from last year, which is we know in college basketball now with the rosters changing is irrelevant. And maybe Ken Palms tweak that now. If they haven't, they should.
But it should be before game one. They should. Yeah. When I wonder when like fan graphs no longer looks at the projections and it's just what you've done.
That's a good question. I don't know that answer. Look into that. I'll see if I can find an answer to that. But 34 games in, they're still OK. We thought the Royals were going to be good. They have not been good, but we still thought they were going to be good. So there's a lot of that in there.
Even when they were 7-16, I feel like they were still at like 17% to make the playoffs or something like that, which I actually think was a little lower than that. But baseball perspectives, for example, had the Royals as an 85-win team.
pakota projections they actually the royals is the best team in the division which i know that shocks everybody because pakota quote-unquote hates the royals but um so when so so that's that's what 85 and 70 that's eight games over 500 when they're nine games under that means okay they're only going to be they're going to be one game under according to them because they still use the projections at that point and so i don't think it means a ton um

Chapter 6: How does the Chiefs' draft pick Emmitt Johnson fit into the team?
They they they're they're going to be footsteps in their brain. If they get to the if they get to mid-August and in first place and some team gains three games in four days, even if they're up by 10 games, you wonder you wonder how they handle that because they got chased down last year in a big way, obviously. And, you know, I look at their lineup.
And top to bottom, it's much deeper than I think I expected because Dylan Dingler has been much better than I thought he would be. Riley Green has hit lefties again, which is a big, big change for him. Kevin McGonigal has been so good. But, I mean, look, Javi Baez has been good for them, and he's on the I.L. Zach McKinstry should not have won a silver slugger but did, and he's on the I.L.
after all those flops against the Royals. Casey Mize is on the aisle and I Reese also is out for the year. You know, they still have Scoble. They still have Valdez. They've still got Kenley Jansen who has not been good, but I think, I don't, I don't know that we, you can ever count Kenley Jansen out. They've still got a really good team.
I don't know if you noticed that Birch Smith is actually pitching well for them, which name blast from the past for the Royals. Yeah. Yeah. I don't, I don't know. I they're, they're, they're different than I thought they would be, which makes it hard to evaluate because I'm, I'm looking at this team and going, okay, well, they're going to dominate. If Kevin McGonigal is good, check.
Terry Scooble and frame about as are good. Check. If the supporting cast continues to help, well, McKinsey is on the IL bias on the IL Dylan Dingler stepped up, you know, so it just looks a little bit different than I thought it would for them, which makes it tough to say, are they actually going to be as good as I thought? And I, I tend to agree with you.
I think that we are just waiting for them to take off. That's a good team. Yeah. And then Cleveland is always just there. Even when they lose 10 in a row, they're always just there, hanging around, ready to go on a run. So, again, not to belabor the point, but this goes back to this week is massive for them. Yes.
Because if they have a big week, I think it changes the conversation in the division for the entire season. If they have a bad week, I think it keeps the conversation where it has been most of the season.
Well, and while we're taking inventory of the American League Central, the flip side of that is while the Royals are still looking up at the White Sox, say I put the Twins in the rearview mirror by just a half a game, and so I'd like to see that grow. But while we're looking at the White Sox, I do think they're better, but I'm still not buying them.
They have a negative 15 run differential where the Tigers are plus 18. They're hot right now. Yeah, the expected win loss for the Tigers is 19 and 16, so a game better than they are. The expected win loss for the White Sox is 15 and 19. So they are exceeding their expected win-loss by a game. So I think there's a bit of a market correction to come. But I will say this.
