0

Chapter 2: What are the highlights of Kevin Harlan's career and contributions?

66.822 - 87.7 Unknown

is brought to you by our friends at Family Leisure. K10 and Ridgeview, don't forget, the big Sundance Spa sale is wrapping up this weekend. When you buy a Sundance spa, get over there. Tell me you heard about it here on 810. There's always extra discounts for you. Go see them. K10 and Ridgeview online at familyleisure.com. Curtis, we began, we were talking college basketball. We began with some Mizzou news. We've got recruiting news. Hot off the presses from on threes, Joe Tipton, BYU transfer guard, Canard Davis.

0

108.082 - 130.029 Unknown

has committed to Mizzou. 6'6 junior and St. Louis native averaged 8.5 points a game this past season after scoring 16 a game the prior year at Southern Illinois. So Mizzou picks up yet another recruit, and Curtis will celebrate with yet another order of tacos. That was going to happen anyway. That was happening. Let's start with three and get three more on the way.

0

130.25 - 151.311 Unknown

By the way, don't forget we'll be at Rancho Grande in Blue Springs on Monday. So if you missed us today, you can see us on Monday. You want to watch me eat tacos on Monday? Come on out and watch. Yeah, let's go. You can't have any, but we can have your own. You can't have any of mine. No, no, no. They are delightful. They're wonderful. All right, let's talk a little Chiefs football.

0

151.392 - 176.689 Unknown

First of all, it's been official. The Chiefs have declined the fifth-year option on Felix Anyudike Uzama. First-round pick, as we recall, in 23, right? 2023. Three sacks in the 34 games he's played. He's forced two fumbles. Maybe he can get healthy. Maybe he can get going. I hope so. I hope so. Local kid. His team has the need at that position if he can do anything. There's an opportunity.

176.989 - 192.51 Unknown

He's not going to lose a numbers battle. Yeah. All right, let's hear from the Kansas City Chiefs. They were at the podium today bringing the rookies out today. Let's start with some Montsour Delane. Montsour Delane was asked about being able to anticipate routes before the snap.

192.49 - 202.487 Montsour Delane

Really just, I think I just take pride in, you know, my cerebral part of the game. You know, I just try to, you know, understand my alignment, my splits, and to help give me an advantage, you know, before the play even happens.

202.527 - 206.033 Unknown

And what did you see from them? How did you know what they were going to do?

206.053 - 214.988 Montsour Delane

Oh, you know, you just try to eliminate routes, you know. So, you know, if it's a cut split or if it's a wider split, there's only a certain amount of routes you can do. So just limiting that route tree make the game easier.

Chapter 3: How does Kevin Harlan view the current state of the Chiefs' defense?

361.3 - 374.085 R. Mason Thomas

Yeah, he comes back. He'll come back. Last year he came back for the Missouri game, like wherever it lines up on his bye week. He was down in South Florida one time when I was down there. But our schedules don't be aligned sometimes. But, yeah, I've seen him.

0

375.415 - 401.892 Unknown

He said the Lord led him to Oklahoma, but Nick Benito was another factor. So it's God, Nick Benito. Yeah. Then it's who's the coach? Brad Venables? For Oklahoma? Yeah, Brad Venables, yeah. Okay, there's a pecking order in Thomas' life. All right, fifth round pick Cyrus Allen, wide receiver from Cincinnati. Of course, same school that Travis Kelsey went to.

0

401.932 - 404.314 Unknown

Allen said Kelsey's still a big name at Cincy.

0

404.895 - 419.968 Curtis

Man, it's crazy. I think he got a lot of stuff named after him. I think the hotel that we was at, I think like our key card is a picture of him on it. So it was crazy. I'm like, this is Travis Kelsey? I'm like, that's crazy. I wish I could get that treatment, but hey.

0

423.492 - 444.657 Unknown

Well, I mean. Key card to hotel. He's got Travis Kelsey's picture up. If he can get that kind of perk, if he can just get going to become the all-time playoff leading receiver, then you get that kind of perk. You know what I mean? Yeah, and not only blow away numbers of tight ends in the playoffs, but be second only to Jerry Rice.

Chapter 4: What challenges do the Chiefs face with their cornerback situation?

444.677 - 464.313 Unknown

Well, he's ahead of Jerry Rice in everything but touchdowns, I think. He's by far. When people say, yeah, but he's not really a tight end. I'm like, he's ahead of every wide out, too. What are you talking about? If you just said he was a wide out, he's still going to the hall. So, yeah, we'll see where he ends up being on the all-time playoff list, huh? You know what?

0

464.333 - 489.209 Unknown

If he's up there, if there are key cards with his picture on it, nice pick. Yeah. We mentioned the Royals and Mariners. Royals start the first of three in Seattle tonight. Cole Reagans versus Brian Wu, a battle of the aces. Mm-hmm. Woo-woo to this one. Yeah. He's going to need to get some woo tonight. Cole Reagans, but had 11 strikeouts in one walk last time out, and he's a dog in it.

0

489.289 - 509.633 Unknown

Plus 126 if you want to get on the Royals. Minus 148 for the Mariners. Brian Wu's got some stuff. Yeah. Got some stuff. So does Cole Reagan. So this will be a great one tonight on TV. People think it's going to be 2-1 or 3-2. I think 10-7. Yeah. Gets out of hand. That would end up being. Yeah. Some more news from the Kansas City Royals.

0

509.693 - 533.05 Unknown

Kylie McDaniel, you hear him regularly on The Zone with Jason Anderson. Sterling. I think I did that. Well done. Jason Anderson. Second billing. Yeah, Stu. Sterling Holmes. Stu. Yeah, that's how it works. Kylie McDaniel has the top ten prospects for each one of the organizations out there. For the Royals, he goes Josh Hammond, shortstop, number one, last year's draft.

0

533.331 - 560.986 Unknown

Kendri Churio, right-hand pitcher, number two. Blake Mitchell, catcher, number three. David Shields, the left-hander in high A ball, number four. By the way, Churrio's the 18-year-old in low A, if you are not keeping up. It is Sean Gamble. There you go. I'll take that, sir. Sean Gamble, center fielder from – I'm trying to remember which draft class he was from.

561.047 - 563.729 Curtis

Him and Hammond were the same round last year.

563.809 - 564.67 Unknown

Where was he?

Chapter 5: How has the Chiefs' offensive strategy evolved under pressure?

565.131 - 594.333 Unknown

Oh, yeah, he was the one – was he the later first or the earlier first, though, in that draft? Oh, boy. Oh, boy. I can't remember. They've been just lumped together so much. Yeah. I don't remember which one was first. I think Hammond was second and Gamble was first, but somebody checked me on that. Is this spelling correct on Gomez? No idea. A-N-G-E-I-B-E-L.

0

594.393 - 616.325 Unknown

I mean, I know the Royals have got a number of like 18, 19-year-old. That's correct. That's right. On Giebel? Gomez. Or Angebel. Angebel. Angebel Gomez. Center fielder at six, Carson Roquefort. Center fielder at seven, eight, Ramon Ramirez. Catcher, nine, Michael Lombardi. Right-hand pitcher in ten, Justin Lampkin.

0

616.345 - 636.12 Unknown

Left-hand pitcher, I think they've got some more 17, 18-year-old kids that I think have a bigger upside than a couple of those guys down on the bottom. But the thing to circle, they like Hammond. He's off to a really good start. Sean Gamble is not, or at least wasn't a couple of weeks ago last time I looked. Hammond jumped out of there. Gamble didn't. Ken Ricciario has been outstanding.

0

636.181 - 664.254 Unknown

And David Shields has turned the corner. Gamble 23rd, Hammond 31st that year. Blake Mitchell at one point was batting below 200 with an over 400 on base. He had five home runs with ten hits. Weird stat line. Weird split. It's interesting to see how that one is going to work over the long haul. NBA action tonight. We have got three more playoff games. Pistons Magic. is coming up tonight.

0

665.015 - 682.158 Unknown

That is game six. Magic, three-and-a-half-point favorites. Raptors, four-and-a-half-point favorites against the Cavs. Rockets, three-and-a-half-point favorites against the Lakers. They can even that series there. Lightning and Canadiens, Sabres and Bruins, Knights and Mammoth coming your way tonight. Six games of playoff action.

682.178 - 703.132 Unknown

My best friend, Gary, who's been a Laker fan as long as we have, he's fearful they're going to become the first team below 3-0. Really? They really – I mean, that's a turd losing at home in game five with a chance to put him out of their misery. It's a turd, but they don't have two of their best players. Reeves was back. Well, Reeves is back, but they don't have – That's true.

703.293 - 725.057 Unknown

They don't have – Donchick, so lay off, Curtis. Lay off. It's from love. We're at Rancho Grande. Come on out and see us. Let's take a break. Let's talk to Kevin Harlan while we maybe get some tacos. You don't know. Maybe get some Coronas. It's the program live at Rancho Grande. Welcome back. You're on the program here on Sports Radio 810 WHB as we finish strong here on a Friday.

725.097 - 726.199 Unknown

You know how we like to do it.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the Chiefs' recent draft decisions?

726.781 - 749.457 Unknown

We bring in the great Kevin Harlan, the voice of America, CBS Prime, of course, Westwood One as well as we broadcast live here at Rancho Grande in Parkville, you know, Cinco de Miles. Right around the corner, where are you going to have that celebration? No better place than Rancho Grande, all three locations. Here in Parkville, 11-0-1-5, Highway 45 in Parkville.

0

749.477 - 767.801 Unknown

That's basically Highway 45 between the National and 435. If you live up here, you know where it is. Liberty, Blue Springs as well. All three locations are going to be rocking and rolling starting at 2 o'clock. They'll have live music on Cinco de Mayo. Cade Mitchell, followed by Chris Stewart in Parkville, Michael Wolfe. In Liberty, Caitlin Rushing in Blue Springs.

0

768.061 - 788.308 Unknown

Food and drink specials, $3.50 on all the Corona bottles. So whichever, whether it's Corona Premier, whether it's the Corona, Corona Light, you can get it. Buy one, get one, hard shell beef tacos. Giveaways starting after 4 p.m. It's at Rancho Grande. We're here today. Come on out and join us for some great Mexican food. And don't forget Mother's Day. Mom would love some tacos.

0

788.709 - 800.972 Unknown

So what are you waiting for? They have great, great tacos here at Rancho Grande. All of it made from scratch. It's wonderful. We'll talk a little football. We'll talk a lot of basketball with Kevin Harlan, who joins us right now. Kevin, how are you, sir?

0

801.425 - 808.495 Kevin Harlan

Well, I wish I were right by you. Tacos, burritos, all of it sounds pretty good. I'd be right with you.

808.515 - 831.399 Unknown

It does not get any better. Great locally owned, one of the iconic spots here in Kansas City, Rancho Grande. And we come up here every – we always love when we start rolling in towards Cinco de Mayo because we know we're coming to Rancho Grande. And so we have eaten like the fat pigs that we are here today. So, you know. We're holding up our end of the bargain here at Rancho Grande.

832.202 - 842.254 Kevin Harlan

Don't be so hard on yourself now. Just give yourself a little grace. Every once in a while, it's good to... tie on the food bag, you know, get ready to go pull up and, uh, and shout out.

842.374 - 842.695 Unknown

Yeah.

842.715 - 843.156 Kevin Harlan

I'm proud.

Chapter 7: How does Kevin Harlan assess the performance of the Celtics this season?

993.518 - 1017.032 Kevin Harlan

In fact, Denver, to get the 54 wins, really did a terrific job when a lot of their players were out a good portion of the season. So I would like to think they can continue. They clearly need reinforcements. And what Minnesota did shows you the depth of the Timberwolves, their bench, their athleticism, and they made that a point in this series. They attacked.

0

1017.072 - 1044.965 Kevin Harlan

They were going downhill, penetrating the lane, and really driving the ball, and Denver didn't have much of an answer for it. So that cost them, and the Timberwolves now have got an incredible – series coming up against San Antonio, we could see the French legend Gobert go up against the young upstart who's going to have an incredible, colossal career in Wembenyama.

0

1045.365 - 1065.377 Kevin Harlan

And whether they will go head-to-head, I'm not sure. Minnesota has played San Antonio a little differently, and they put other players on Wembenyama and not Gobert. But clearly, Gobert and Wembenyama are going to see time against each other on the floor, and that will be really enjoyable to watch.

0

1065.477 - 1072.693 Kevin Harlan

Two premier defensive players, two outstanding players from France that have truly put an imprint on this league.

0

1073.146 - 1096.79 Unknown

French on French crime is what we're talking about here. That's exactly what we're talking about. I mean, I don't know, five years ago or maybe even two years ago, did we think we'd be talking about, you know, the great center matchups? We saw Djokic, you know, going against Gobert. Now we're going to watch Wembenyama. I mean, like the center's back in the NBA.

1097.531 - 1121.61 Kevin Harlan

Well, the only reason it's back is because these centers are not playing like centers. The only thing that is comfortable to see is their size and where they will normally stand and rim protection and clogging the middle. But the difference is now centers are more like forwards. They're shooting threes. They're playing on the perimeter. They're passing.

1122.13 - 1148.325 Kevin Harlan

Jokic, Wembenyama, and Gobert are three great examples of that. Carl Anthony Towns in New York is in that conversation. When you've got centers... the play-like forwards, the game will look different and feel different. And because of these two guys in particular, it is different. Gobert has taken threes. Gobert likes to be a distributor. Rembenyama is a three-point guy. And he's 7'4".

1148.485 - 1174.806 Kevin Harlan

And Gobert is, what, 7'2". So we're seeing an evolving position. And so centers, in the traditional sense of Bob Lanier or whoever you want to point to, Abdul-Jabbar, who really stayed in and around the lane. Now the centers are out on the perimeter. And so it changes the game. It adds space, adds driving lanes, the driving kick game. All these different things are there.

1175.127 - 1178.533 Kevin Harlan

And they're hitting threes, which is just, to me, remarkable.

Chapter 8: What predictions does Kevin Harlan make for the upcoming playoff games?

1296.929 - 1316.374 Kevin Harlan

But that doesn't mean that the league is not going to evolve into a nice balance. Clearly, the three is the difference maker. And when you're hitting them, you're basically unstoppable. And Steph Curry coming on the scene, as you know, Saran, has changed the game as much as any player, probably as much as when Jordan, Dr. J, and Kobe played.

0

1316.394 - 1345.105 Kevin Harlan

They changed the game into a physical, acrobatic, slam-dunk type of affair. In the 90s, it was half-court offense, a lot of defense. League thought it was getting boring, and they were right. And so they leaned the other way, and they made threes, They made the offensive movement easier, and they've tweaked it a little bit since, but they moved the needle.

0

1345.946 - 1375.909 Kevin Harlan

And I think that because there's been this proliferation of three-point shooting in the league and how it so easily seduces you to thinking this is the only way we can play, if you've got those mechanisms on your team like Boston does, It's hard to deny that. But I think any coach would say, yeah, threes and free throws are a good way to win, but balance is always the goal.

0

1375.969 - 1400.011 Kevin Harlan

And I don't know if their roster now, which took a big upheaval and transformation this past offseason, is exactly what they want. This is going to be a year supposedly without Tatum and a revamped roster from tip to tail. And they did. They let a lot of players go. Al Horford gone. holiday gone up in Portland now. So, I mean, they've changed the way they look.

0

1400.671 - 1424.688 Kevin Harlan

They've stayed with the way they play. I think the arrival of Tatum probably caught him by surprise that he's been as effective as he's been. And they still have the remnants of just being a three-point shooting team. And until they get the right components to play the two-point game, which we clearly see is a way to win in this league, you're going to have these up-and-down performances.

1425.189 - 1447.2 Kevin Harlan

And when you're off, it's going to be ugly. But when you're on, you're going to be dominant, and that's the way Boston has played the last three or four years. They've won a championship. They've had an incredible run. They're having another great run this year. And I don't think it's going to cease, but I do see them leaning into down the road more of a complementary two-point game

1447.535 - 1469.323 Kevin Harlan

which will only make them better. They've got players that Brown is 10 years, Tatum is nine years at the NBA, still young, still with a lot of basketball left. So they can hold on to those things. But as we know, you've got to be able to drive and kick. You've got to be able to play the two-point game. And Boston, I think, will lean into that when their roster becomes more the way they envision.

1469.363 - 1471.686 Kevin Harlan

It really is a work in progress now itself.

1471.919 - 1491.062 Unknown

Yeah, it is. And it's amazing that they're in this. I think they'll win the seventh game against the Sixers. But, you know, there's a lot of people thought when Tatum came back, okay, that's it. The Celtics are the team to beat. And we're watching, you know, the high seeds. Maybe it's just, you know, because I was a Laker fan, you know, and I was focused in on the Lakers as a kid.
