Chapter 2: What updates did the Chiefs defenders share during the Need to Know segment?
The Royals are on the road tonight. They had a roster move today, Curtis.
Yes, they put Nick Mears, right-handed pitcher, has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 28th, which was yesterday, right shoulder impingement. They have recalled right-handed pitcher Eric Sarantola from AAA Omaha and hoping that he doesn't pick up where he left off in some difficult outings.
One of them where he was just like, you're going to just stay out there and get your brains beaten for a while, kid. You're taking this one. And he did, so he's back. The lineup that was out earlier today, people may have noticed some changes at the top. Lane Thomas moved into the leadoff spot. Bobby Witt Jr. hitting second. Mikel Garcia dropped down to three. Sal Perez at four.
Starling Marte at five. Vinny Pasquantino down to six. Nick Lofton hitting seventh. Jack Caglione, eight. Kyle Isbell, ninth, against a left-handed pitcher. going tonight for the McKenzie Gore, going for the Rangers.
Good news, Stephen Kolek's going for the Royals, and he's been really, really good. They won't need much if he's as good as he was last time.
Probably not. Just one. Probably not.
Because he actually threw a complete game shutout, which is a rarity of all rarities, right? So we'll see if the Royals can get something going there against the Rangers tonight. A little OTA action yesterday for the Chiefs. We played a lot of sound yesterday when Jack was in.
We didn't get to play all of the defensive sound because it happened a little bit later in the day because of just the way the whole thing worked out. So let's play a little bit of that for you now because you can't ever talk enough Chiefs.
How about George Karloftis, who's just had his contract reworked to redo the signing bonus to help the team out financially, but he's the only guy in that 2022 draft who got re-signed. He was asked what he's been working on this last offseason.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of the Chiefs' recent draft picks?
But you give Taequann Thornton, when he signs to the Chiefs practice squad, and you give him all of the off-the-field issues that Rasheed Rice has, he's probably never playing in the league again. And so...
Yeah, I mean, that is one of the hard truths about the league that we cover is that the better player you are, and make no mistake, the Chiefs think Rasheed Rice can be one of the top five wide receivers in the NFL. I mean, that is how they feel internally about him. There's going to be a longer leash, and I get some of the fan criticism and to an extent disgust of wanting to see this guy go.
But the hard truth, again, in this league that we cover is if Rasheed Rice went, you released him, much like Kareem Hunt, when he won the rushing title and you released him, he's going to get picked up almost immediately. And so you have to, I think, sometimes swallow that, make a business decision if you want to be one of the better teams in the NFL.
And I don't blame you for feeling one way or another about it. I'm just talking about the realities of what this league is.
You know, over the years, we've gotten used to seeing these graphs, these charts that, you know, the four corners type thing, four quadrants. And the Chiefs logo, when it's good, particularly if it's Patrick Mahomes, is upper right, which is kind of where you want to be. There's one that came out this past week where the Chiefs are in the lower right, which...
Usually, you don't want to be lower left and this one I think you don't want to be in the lower right and I'll explain why. It is a graph of play action rate versus RPO rate and the Chiefs are almost all by themselves in the lower right hand corner which means a lot of RPOs and not many play actions and why I think that's problematic is I looked at the rest of the teams.
The top 10 in points scored last year averaged about 3.3% RPO. The Chiefs, who finished 21st in points, were 11%, more than three times as much. The top 10 in points scored last year averaged about 26% play action. The Chiefs, again, who finished 21st, were just over 16%. I mean, if they want this offense to improve, this should probably change, right?
Yeah, it has to. And you've heard me say this before. When it really feels like the Chiefs are ticking and the offense ā Pass and run is playing well. You look down in the third or fourth quarter, and they have at least 12 to 16 rushes.
And part of the problem with running an RPO first offense, which she's had for so many years, is a lot of times Mahomes wants to throw the football, and he feels like he sees an opening, and he pulls. And so I got to imagine when you go and sign Ken Walker, who makes his money by running on our center, that they want to introduce some of those elements back into the offense.

Chapter 4: How did Pete Sweeney describe the Chiefs' recent practices?
You can go watch Oklahoma and Michigan up there this September. Park on the golf course. Come on. That's what they do up there. Well, if you want to invite me, Todd. Well, I was hoping for the invite from you because I don't have a plan to go yet. My buddy Zane is definitely going. I've been to the big house before, but it's September. We'll see. We'll see. All right.
Final question here of the Final Four. How many games does Patrick Mahomes play in the regular season this year for the Chiefs?
I think it's 17. I mean, I do. I'm not going to bet against him. Yesterday was out of control, so I'm going to say 17.
I was going to say 16. He plays in all of them, but he sets out the last one because he got the division one. How about that? Good work at that.
You're always finding ways to get me, Todd. I think the AFC West is good enough where they're going to maybe need to play them all.
Might need to play them all. Pete, it's good to talk to you. I will see you. I heard you're bringing breakfast on Monday morning. Is that correct?
Yeah, I got to figure out what to bring. I mean, it's a lot of different palates. I'm going to need some organic kale for Jake.
Jake's not eating. Just get eggs and stuff like that for Steven and me.
Some oatmeal for Steven. Who knows what you eat? Probably a protein bar.
