And we are The Prosecutors. Today on The Prosecutors, we finish our look at the disappearance of Chance Engelbert. Hello, everybody, and welcome to this episode of The Prosecutors. I'm Brett, and I'm joined, as always, by my bronc-busting co-host, Alice.

103.157 - 107.784 Alice

I wish I were that tough. I wish I were a rodeo queen, but I'll settle for bronc-busting.

107.804 - 111.029 Brett

Have you ever ridden in a rodeo? I know you ride horses. You're a horsewoman.

111.169 - 118.199 Alice

I have not, because I will say, so equestrian, like hunter-jumper, it's very different from barrel racing.

118.239 - 119.661 Brett

Horse dancing. Horse dancing.

Chapter 2: What happened leading up to Chance Engelbert's disappearance?

194.793 - 215.802 Brett

But then it ends up basically trying to walk all the way back to Wyoming. There's a whole bunch of phone calls that are exchanged, and then a storm comes. He's caught in the storm. It seems like his phone, either something happens to it or it just stops pinging. We're not entirely sure. He's caught on camera shortly after the storm ends, but then no one sees him anymore.

215.822 - 240.57 Brett

He's caught at about 10 p.m. the night of July 6th, and then no one sees him. And the next morning... The morning of July 7th, 2019, his wife, Bailey, she wakes up and she's thinking, well, he'll be back. He will. He will have walked. He'll blown off steam. He'll have come back. But she wakes up and he has not returned. And this not only shocks her, but she gets really worried.

0

241.191 - 262.546 Brett

She tries calling Verizon to see if they can give any information. But honestly, they're unable to help. They probably could help, honestly, in a different circumstance with a different person calling them. But I don't know that they're just going to give subscriber information to anyone who calls. In any event, this is now a serious incident.

0

262.626 - 268.819 Brett

What it started off as just somebody taking a walk has now turned into a missing person.

0

269.643 - 292.811 Alice

So remember, the day before, 7 p.m. is about the time he walks off, storms off. Now we are on the next morning, 11 a.m. So Bailey files a missing persons report with the Goering Police Department. Bailey reported that the police didn't take the matter seriously at first. And you can kind of imagine why. It's not like she came home and he was gone. They had a fight.

293.392 - 311.573 Alice

I mean, even if it's not described as a fight, they were talking to each other and he turned around and walked off, which he's allowed to do because he's an adult. He didn't appear to be incapacitated in any sort of way. So we all have free will. We are allowed to, you know, walk wherever we want, even if we're married or, you know, otherwise in a conversation.

311.874 - 326.46 Alice

So you can imagine why at first they're just hearing this like, okay, he walked off. Probably went to go find his buddies who he was going to spend the weekend with anyways. That's who he called. So he's off probably with his buddies. And, you know, wife, just relax. That's probably what they're thinking.

326.741 - 345.734 Brett

And I'll say this. We've seen this happen in a lot of cases where the police don't initially take it very seriously. Of all the cases we've ever seen, this is the one where that reaction is the most reasonable. Because this really is, he's a grown man. You obviously were in a fight. He walks off. It's the next morning. This just doesn't feel like a missing person.

345.794 - 364.078 Brett

This feels like a couple that's had a fight. And one member of this couple doesn't want to talk to the other one. Is this really something that we should be putting our resources toward? Particularly when he has all these other family members who might have helped him. So I think their initial response is actually pretty rational.

Chapter 3: What were the initial police responses to Chance's missing person report?

1040.189 - 1063.585 Brett

In October of 2021, a human arm bone is discovered by a hunter in Scotts Bluff County. However, this was confirmed not to be chances because once again, every time someone goes missing and there's a search, they're always finding something. the bodies of other people. It's always kind of amazing how often that happens.

0

1063.766 - 1074.027 Brett

And frankly, for the next few years, there's nothing in this disappearance becomes one of those mysteries that everyone talks about.

Chapter 4: How extensive was the search effort for Chance Engelbert?

1535.563 - 1555.691 Alice

How was he going to basically start a new life without money? Because money was tight and he wasn't using, you know, his bank cards or anything like that. I do wish that running off and starting a new life were that easy, but you need resources and it doesn't seem he had any or that there's any sign that he used anything. So that brings us to another theory, which is, was Chance murdered?

0

1556.633 - 1573.779 Alice

So many people speculate that Bailey or her family had something to do with Chance's disappearance. However, at this point, this is purely speculation, and the police have stated that Bailey and her family have been extremely cooperative. Now, this theory is based on a few things.

0

1574.6 - 1588.978 Alice

Bailey and her family were the last to see Chance, and we of course know the last people to see someone, they're gonna be on the suspect list if there is a crime. We know that there was a disagreement between Chance and his brother-in-law and father-in-law at the golf course.

0

1589.058 - 1612.98 Alice

Remember, there was some discussion or comment made about the pay he was going to get at his new job, something about it not being very good. But of course, Bailey reported that even though Chance was super angry about it, her brother and father weren't actually trying to put him down, but rather Chance had misinterpreted it. Now, Chance and Bailey reportedly did have a tumultuous relationship.

0

1612.96 - 1629.366 Alice

as I think can kind of be evidenced by the way he walked off in this situation. And it wasn't the first time that something like this had happened. Bailey asked for that death certificate just three days after Chance disappeared in order to collect on his insurance.

1629.346 - 1651.978 Alice

That can go to motive, but as we've already laid out, money was already tight for them and nothing like this had ever happened before, so she may have thought, well, this is something really wrong and I need to take care of our son now. Matt Miller, Chance's best friend, and Don reported that Bailey told Blakemans that they did not need to hold Chance's job when they stated that they would.

1651.958 - 1672.87 Alice

So that's his new employer. They were like, look, you know, we hired him. We'd like him to start. If he shows up, we'll hold the job for him. And at least Chance's mom and best friends say that it was Bailey who told his new employer, don't worry about it. He's not coming. Now, Bailey and her family hired a lawyer. and Bailey no longer speaks to the press regarding Chance's disappearance.

1672.89 - 1687.382 Alice

These last two, I have to say, we always advise you guys, don't talk to the media, don't talk to anyone, get yourself a lawyer, even if you're innocent, especially if you're innocent, because, you know, things can kind of get out of hand in terms of the Twittersphere or the public square.

1687.818 - 1710.765 Brett

But it's probably not a surprise to anyone listening to this podcast that there's a good chunk of people in the true crime space who think Bailey and her family had something to do with this. And they point to these. This is more than a lot of theories in true crime cases are built on. And the three-day thing is one that... It really gets people. It seems really fast.
