Welcome to Incar Insights. It's Friday night at Monza. John here, I'm in the car with Josh, and anyone who listened to us last night will know we've got a very squeaky uh clutch pedal or a mouse in the footwell with Josh driving. Still haven't got to the bottom of it, but uh we'll worry about that. So if you hear anything squeaking in the background, you know what that is. Um for anyone who's not listened to this in-car insights. Well, this is something we do um every night of a Grand Prix weekend, apart from Sunday when we do the main podcast, it's a mini podcast. We run through the day, it's quite good to decompress, digest everything, just get a little bit of insight of what we've seen in the paddock.
Um, you'll all be pleased to not be in the car with us because Josh and I have just run the track. Um we're a bit hot and sweaty. A bit. Um well, quite a bit actually, but it was was quite cool. Wow. Um Um always quite good just to get out there. Monza's a magical place and an intriguing story potentially developing. Um as I ran ran down towards term one and Josh obviously the same followed me. Um not because I'm faster, just because he left ten minutes after I started. Uh they seem to be resurfacing term one. There's a lot of work going on down at turn one, look like a new strip of asphalt being put down. I couldn't see it was a bit dark, so need to check in the morning. But then it turned to also interestingly, it was like gouges had been
Um taken out of the s the track surface over the curb whether the cars were taken off over the first apex and crunching down I don't know. But uh Josh what did you make of it?
Yeah it was strange wasn't it? Uh it was really unusual because I defin I walked the track on Thursday morning so it was absolutely definitely different at the second shricatan. You had a theory didn't you of why there was these kind of big markings at the second shakatan
Yeah, I may be totally wrong. This is something story we need to chase in the morning, so uh can't be too definitive. But I wonder if there is an element of uh the new aero kind of platform of these cars is here of straight mode and corner mode, that the ride heights will be very different. They're now running well, peak down force in the corners. You run the same wing levels essentially as you would at Zamvoort, which in the past would never have happened at Monza. So whether there's this is There's lessons being learned today about ride heights, it'll be addressed for tomorrow, or whether when the cars switch into corner mode they bottom out and there's much more forces being pushed on them and especially when you're bouncing over curbs uh remains to be seen.
I did wonder if we'd bump into someone leaving the circuit this evening to ask, um but unfortunately everyone had disappeared. The minute you said bump, I did wonder if you meant into another car, but thankfully went to the side. Josh hasn't hit anybody just yet. Um but didn't see anyone, so one to chase in the morning, uh we will keep you posted and obviously you can check on the race website for that. But anyway, we had two practice sessions today. Um FP one, uh the Tafozzi, uh very happy to see Charles Leclerc who knows Hamilton top the times. Um George Russell was just behind them and then Russell was quickest in the second session, FP two. Um behind him Charles Leclerc was just ahead of Kimi Anthony in third.
Anthony we know starting from the back, so we'll be a slipstream assistant for Russell in qualifying tomorrow. Now I must confess to not having followed FP2 very much because I had my head reading International Court of Appeal. um regulations and um jury the FIA jury uh um documents just to understand kind of the Fall out of the International Court of Appeal hearing issue which we will go into in a second. So I'm gonna pass over to Josh, who was actually following a bit more of F P two than I was. Um he also went down to the media pen afterwards spoke to some few drivers. So Josh, what were the highlights?
Yeah, good question. Uh to be honest, no major surprises amongst the top of the order.
