Sarah Hartley 0:00
This ad is for anyone who hates running in the winter when it's cold and rainy and dark and muddy and leafy and slippery.
Andy Baddeley 0:07
So you.
Sarah Hartley 0:07
Me.
Andy Baddeley 0:08
Yeah, this episode is sponsored by the Wahoo Kickr Run. That's what Sarah's banging on about here. We've used the Wahoo Kickr Run for multiple challenges. You, Mark and Jess tried to take me on head to head on a side by side Kickr Run where you were running in a relay to take me on over 10k.
Sarah Hartley 0:22
We did. There was no way to prove it, but I think you cheated because we lost and I'm not quite sure how that happened. But actually recently you've also been using it as a training tool for Valencia Marathon and that's made a huge difference, hasn't it?
Andy Baddeley 0:34
Yeah, and doing all of that, it simulates running outside. So you're simulating the terrain. You can take a real route and it will go up and down. You don't have to manually control it. It also has dynamic pacing, which is called run free mode. So by getting slightly closer to the front of the treadmill, it speeds up and getting slightly closer to the back, it slows down. So you don't have to touch any buttons if you don't want to.
Sarah Hartley 0:52
So cool if you're doing an interval session, strides, or you just really want to test yourself at how good you are at keeping a steady pace. So if you want to check out the Wahoo Kickr Run, head to the link in the show notes. This episode is sponsored by Science in Sport.
Andy Baddeley 1:04
Did you know that Science in Sport was the first major brand to create isotonic gels?
Sarah Hartley 1:08
I did not.
Andy Baddeley 1:09
Yeah, they've invested millions in scientific research and actually that's who I'm using. I'm using Science in Sport's beta fuel gels with electrolytes for my marathon training and for my marathon in Valencia.
Sarah Hartley 1:19
They've got great flavours. They're not too sticky. They don't upset my stomach. Yeah, tried and tested by you, but also tried and tested themselves because so much research has gone into it.
Andy Baddeley 1:30
Yeah, real bona fide scientists and nutritionists working in their place. We know. I've actually been to look at the production line and seen behind the scenes, which is really cool. So I've been able to geek out there. And then they still supply Team GB, Premier League clubs and teams across the MLS, NBA, NFL. So over 300 pro teams and athletes.
Sarah Hartley 1:47
This is a special offer exclusively for Running Channel listeners during December. Not only are you going to save money, you'll also get a free pair of running socks. So head to the link in the show notes to find out more. Welcome to the Running Channel podcast with me, Sarah Hartley.
Rick Kelsey 2:04
Me, Rick Kelsey. And me, Tom Dunn. Oh, gosh, you let him in. Oh, God, he's back. Yeah, we are joined by the Running Channel's mighty Thomas Dunn because he has become recently an ultra marathoner and completed the Hurtwood 50K. I have no idea how you did that, Thomas.
Sarah Hartley 2:22
well we're gonna find out today if you're already a tom fan you probably know about tom's love hate relationship with running but uh everyone in the running channel office the running channel sphere has been i think gobsmacked by the fact that you actually quite enjoyed this you are actively wanting to go out for runs and you added an extra run in which i think might have been the catalyst to the fact that you actually enjoyed this so who is that guy Yeah, I don't, I really don't know. And what have they done with Tom? Why has he gone? But we know lots of people might be wanting to set new fitness goals or add runs in. So we thought this was a perfect time to delve in to what changed you from hate runner to love runner.
Tom Dunn 3:04
I still hate running. Oh, I just have a different. It's complicated. Facebook status. It's complicated.
Rick Kelsey 3:12
As is life.
Sarah Hartley 3:13
Let's dive in. Right, Rick, is your life complicated at the moment? No. What's going on with your running?
Rick Kelsey 3:27
I successfully completed a lovely park run on Saturday. I've been upping my base mileage ahead of last week's rather big announcement that I'm going to do a marathon in 2026.
Sarah Hartley 3:39
Yeah, and you only want to do a 14-week training plan.
Rick Kelsey 3:43
Correct, starting on the 19th of January.
Sarah Hartley 3:46
Are you adding in an extra run?
Rick Kelsey 3:48
I'm going to do three runs a week.
