It is not war and death and famine, it's not that at all. It's the opposite of that. It's to persuade the world outside of that. That's why sports are important. Okay.

You're welcome to a late night second captains podcast available to all on a night that will go down in history. The night the Republic of Ireland carried out their UEFA Nations League fixture. Against Israel. I've been watching it in studio with Murph. Hey, you're on.
Ciarán Murphy 1:34
Hey on.
Brigid O'Hara 1:35
This is our second podcast of the weekend after our emergency pod for World Service members. Yesterday Ken was right in the thick of things reporting on One of the most extraordinary days ever in Irish football, I would say. The decision of Gabin Bazuna to withdraw from the Israel Games, the dismal failure of the FAI to deal with the fallout, a poor performance on the day by the Ireland manager as well. Ken certainly felt that way and and loads more in that podcast. Thank you so much to all our members who listened to that episode, that Saturday night episode, and who got in touch about it. Ireland have now fulfilled the fixture. They've won the match three nil. Ken is in de Bretzen, Haken.
Ken Early 2:11
Owen, how are you? I'm
Brigid O'Hara 2:12
all right. You've been to a lot of football matches, Ken. You've reported on a lot of football matches. Have you ever been to uh an occasion, anything like this tonight?
Ken Early 2:19
Yep. Uh I have. Uh there was a few during COVID which were this type of thing. But None in which Ireland played as well as they did tonight, which is Really uh I was like, Whoa, this is unbelievable. I don't look like Terminators. What is happening out here? Wha w who are what is this thing? The way they were fizzing the ball around, like pa you know, just it was it honestly, it was incredible. Uh I I suppose part of it was a very clear um physical superiority over the Israeli team, which became uh you know, it was it was noticeable that Ireland were just a lot stronger, they were also a lot faster. I mean, if you saw Moyland's goal He just um kind of raced past these race kind of caught them a little off balance, s spotted that he was gonna be able to go past him, just went past him.
Ken Early 3:07
Total confidence. I mean I've I've seldom seen an Irish team play with this type of kind of conviction and focus. And r after the week that they've had, after the couple of days that they've spent two days the two days on Friday and Saturday locked in these like hours long team meetings where they're arguing over what's gonna happen and to and and to come out and face this.

How did the controversy over Gavin Bazunu’s withdrawal shape the team’s lineup?

Ken Early 3:31
And to be honest, I expected that they would lose tonight and that it would it would just complete like a a a perfect nightmare and lead to more days of anguish uh and misery and recrimination ahead. And At least that last part hasn't happened. You know, at least the sort of Israelis haven't managed to add insult to the various injuries that Ir Ireland have suffered uh over the last
Brigid O'Hara 3:59
does it matter though, in the uh grander scheme of things, whether or not Ireland actually won the game of football tonight?
