Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year.

25.003 - 28.047 Alex English

I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Chapter 2: How did Roald Dahl's personal experiences influence his storytelling?

28.33 - 46.881 Aaron Tracy

Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On paper, the three hosts of the Nick Dick and Paul show are geniuses. We can explain how AI works, data centers, but there are certain things that we don't necessarily understand.

47.142 - 50.005 Unknown

Better version of play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

0

50.165 - 50.406 Aaron Tracy

Yes.

0

50.906 - 55.091 Unknown

Which, by the way, wasn't Taylor Swift who said that for the first time. I actually, I thought it was. I got that wrong.

0

55.352 - 63.822 Aaron Tracy

But hey, no one's perfect. We're pretty close, though. Listen to the Nick Dick and Paul show on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

65.101 - 70.148 Unknown

This is Saigon, the story of my family and of the country that shaped us.

70.609 - 80.803 Aaron Tracy

From iHeart Podcast, Saigon. You don't think I'm serious about a free Vietnam? One city, a divided country, and the war that tore America apart. It's for Vietnam.

80.823 - 88.334 David Biancooli

They're pouring petrol all over here. Freedom for Vietnam! There's a fire coming to this country and it's going to burn out everything.

88.634 - 110.953 Aaron Tracy

Listen to Saigon on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Now, everybody over here. Oh, it's one of my other favorite places. The Twilight Gazebo. Sunset Gardens. Twilight Gazebo. What's next? Dead Man's Grove? Mom, could you please try to be a little bit positive about this?

Chapter 3: What are the differences between the original and adapted versions of 'Willy Wonka'?

724.492 - 726.435 Gene Wilder

So they let me do it.

0

728.12 - 747.161 Aaron Tracy

It's not a surprise that Roald Dahl had a problem with this. As I already mentioned, he wasn't a fan of actors in general. And here's an example of an actor being given a lot of authority to alter a role that Dahl created. But I think Dahl was always going to have a problem with whoever played Willy Wonka. In his book, Wonka is very underwritten, purposefully.

0

747.541 - 762.548 Aaron Tracy

He's an enigma, like his author, which offers the reader a delicious mystery. But when you put that same character on film and put a human face and voice behind him, either the mystery fades or the actor comes up with such a strange interpretation that a whole new mystery is born.

763.979 - 778.733 Unknown

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Lil' Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people? I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Lil' Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back At It podcast. I'm Sam Jay.

778.994 - 780.215 Aaron Tracy

And I'm Alex English.

780.655 - 785.36 Sam Jay

Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.

785.72 - 790.525 Aaron Tracy

Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.

790.945 - 793.648 Alex English

To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.

795.164 - 802.856 David Biancooli

I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.

Chapter 4: Why did Roald Dahl dislike the 1971 film adaptation of 'Willy Wonka'?

1836.367 - 1839.332 Alex English

For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

1862.014 - 1863.876 Aaron Tracy

Who's he? He's the writer-director.

0

1864.216 - 1881.033 Unknown

Who do you think he is? I don't know. You mean like the president? You think Canada has a president? You think China has a president? Let's walk through that. God, I love that thing. I use it all the time. I wrap it in a blanket and sing to it at night.

0

1882.654 - 1888.261 Aaron Tracy

It's like the old Polish saying, not my monkeys, not my circus. It was a good one. I like that saying.

It is an actual Polish saying. It is an actual Polish saying. Better version of play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Yes. Which, by the way, wasn't Taylor Swift who said that for the first time. I actually, I thought it was. I got that wrong.
