Dr. Steven Novella 0:10
Hello and welcome to The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. Today is Sunday, March 27th, and we are live from Boston.
Woo!
Dr. Steven Novella 0:28
This is your host, Stephen Novella, and joining me this week are Bob Novella. Hey, everybody. Tara Santamaria.
Unknown 0:37
Howdy.
Dr. Steven Novella 0:41
Jay Novella.
Unknown 0:41
Hey, guys.
Dr. Steven Novella 0:45
Evan Bernstein.
Bob Novella 0:46
Hello, Boston.
Dr. Steven Novella 0:50
And not just a special guest, but a regular rogue and our brother in skepticism, George Robb. Wicked live podcast, Robb.
Unknown 1:01
Wicked live.
George Robb 1:02
Let's pod. Let's pod this Boston.
Bob Novella 1:06
They're all shaking their heads. Thank you, George. Does anybody in here have a really thick Boston accent? Please. Anybody, please.
Cara Santa Maria 1:13
Come on. You might not know it about yourself. Does anybody point to somebody else?
Bob Novella 1:17
I think you're laughing, so you do, don't you?
Dr. Steven Novella 1:19
That's the girl from Virginia, Jay, if you remember from five minutes ago. So last night we were in New York. So, of course, we were thinking, all right, so which city is better, New York or Boston?
Bruno Satin 1:31
We thought we would just talk about that.
Dr. Steven Novella 1:33
Just throw it down. So what do you guys think?
Bruno Satin 1:36
New York.
Dr. Steven Novella 1:38
All right, so we're going to start off with a fun bit that George came up with. Oh, get open with it.
George Robb 1:43
Tell us about it. It's just I've seen other people do this, and I wanted to get the rogues' take. This is something called over-under. I'm going to just list a bunch of random things, and the rogues are going to say whether they think it's overrated or underrated or properly rated. And hopefully it will foster some nice conversation and debate. Not that you guys ever debate about anything in particular. No, we agree on everything.
Dr. Robert (Bob) Novella 2:05
So, again, we're going to say sort of overrated. No, we do. We debate on stuff.
George Robb 2:08
What we should probably do is just do a quick whip down the line, and then we can maybe have a conversation about it. So we'll start from Kara and go down. And again, say overrated, underrated, or properly rated. Okay? I got a bunch here. Let's go with, here's the first one, avocados.
Cara Santa Maria 2:26
Oh, overrated.
George Robb 2:28
Overrated, 100%. Properly.
Bob Novella 2:30
Proper. Overrated.
Dr. Robert (Bob) Novella 2:32
Overrated.
Cara Santa Maria 2:33
We're an anti-avocado bunch over here.
Dr. Robert (Bob) Novella 2:36
Really?
Cara Santa Maria 2:36
Well, I live in L.A. It's like they put avocado on everything. I know. It's freaking everywhere. I don't like it.
Dr. Steven Novella 2:41
And I hate avocado.
Cara Santa Maria 2:42
Me too. They're weird. That explains it. They're weird soft fruits.
Dr. Steven Novella 2:46
Even if I liked them, I think they would be overrated.
Unknown 2:48
I don't like guac.
Dr. Steven Novella 2:49
No, guac is poison. Guac is poison?
Unknown 2:52
Okay, I grew up in Texas. I eat queso. It's gross. I'm gross.
Bob Novella 2:56
That's your curse of super tasting. That's right.
Evan Bernstein 2:59
You're talking to two super tasters over there.
Bob Novella 3:02
I love it. I love it. It's great in sushi. It's great in salads. Right? It's an augmenter.
Cara Santa Maria 3:07
It's fair. It's fair.
Dr. Steven Novella 3:09
But you want it on everything.
Bob Novella 3:10
No, I didn't want it on everything.
Cara Santa Maria 3:11
In L.A., it's literally on everything.
Dr. Steven Novella 3:13
So it's overrated.
Evan Bernstein 3:13
Okay, how nutritious? What's the nutrition you get out of the avocado compared to the calories you're consuming?
Dr. Steven Novella 3:18
It actually sucks nutrition out of your body.
George Hrab 3:22
It's good fats, right? It's a good fat.
Cara Santa Maria 3:23
And it's got chlorophyll. I mean, clearly.
George Hrab 3:25
Stuart, you clearly like avocado.
George Robb 3:27
I love them. I do, too. I could eat guac every day.
Cara Santa Maria 3:30
So are you properly rated or are you underrated?
George Robb 3:32
I would say proper or under. I'd say, yeah, I'd say properly rated.
Bob Novella 3:35
I mean, on a ginger salad? Oh, forget about it. Oh, my God, forget it.
Cara Santa Maria 3:39
Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. All right. This is fascinating. Minecraft. I don't know anything about Minecraft. It's rated. Children love it, right? I don't know. Get me. I don't know.
Dr. Steven Novella 3:51
I think it's properly rated.
Bob Novella 3:52
Properly, for sure. Overrated.
Dr. Robert (Bob) Novella 3:54
Overrated.
George Robb 3:56
Blocky graphics, I can't get past it. Okay. Evan, why is it overrated?
Evan Bernstein 4:00
Overrated, well, frankly, I don't play it. I think it's cool, kind of what people are able to do with it, but I still don't find it impressive enough to devote the apparently thousands of hours you need to do to achieve these kinds of artistic expressions.
Bob Novella 4:18
So my response to that, Evan, is it's a wonderful game to let your kids get into as one of their first video games because there's an enormous amount of creativity. Like if they're playing World of Warcraft, for example...
