Hiring repeatedly from the same circle of recommendations. Refusing to admit that hiring mistakes may be coming from leadership. Hiring based solely on experience rather than adaptability. Believing there are no good candidates available. Rushion emphasizes that leadership must take responsibility for the quality of its hiring decisions. 3. Don't Build a Business on Hope Many businesses fail because they operate on optimism rather than planning. Be Willing to Let Employees Go One of the hardest responsibilities of leadership is termination. Rushion advises employers to: Be clear about performance expectations. Document problems. Raise Your Own Value Before Asking for More For employees, Rushion recommends thinking beyond the current position. Instead of focusing only on the job you were hired to do: Look for additional responsibilities. Set higher goals. Become indispensable. Increase your value to the organization. When your value grows, opportunities and compensation often follow. 7. Be Careful Hiring Family Members Rushion identifies several common mistakes: Hiring family simply because they're family. Hiring relatives because you feel sorry for them. Giving jobs to relatives who need financial help. Hiring family members who already owe you money. Hiring someone solely because a parent or relative recommended them. Business decisions should be based on qualifications and fit, not emotions. 8. Use a 90-Day Probation Period Rushion believes a structured probation period helps protect both employer and employee. Key checkpoints include: 30 Days: Review performance and reinforce expectations. 60 Days: Evaluate progress and determine whether improvement is occurring. 90 Days: Decide whether the employee is a long-term fit for the organization.
