Trauma can change the way you see yourself, other people and the world around you. It can shape your behaviour, influence your relationships and affect the decisions you make. But trauma is something you have experienced. It is not who you are. In this episode of The Strong Life Project, Shaun O’Gorman explores one of the most important distinctions you can make when recovering from difficult experiences: the difference between acknowledging your trauma and allowing it to become your identity. Your past may explain some of your behaviour, but it does not have to dictate your future. When you define yourself by what happened to you, you can unknowingly give your past control over your present. Resilience begins when you recognise what happened, understand how it affected you and then take responsibility for deciding what happens next. This does not mean pretending trauma did not happen or simply thinking positively. Real resilience requires honesty, self awareness, emotional strength and the willingness to confront the patterns that are no longer serving you. Your experiences can become part of your story without becoming the definition of your life. Whether you have experienced trauma, chronic stress, difficult relationships, professional pressure or significant personal loss, the goal is not to erase your past. The goal is to build the capacity to move forward without allowing your past to control your future. Shaun challenges you to stop asking, “What happened to me?” and start asking, “What am I going to do with what happened to me?” Your trauma may be part of your story. It is not your identity.
