As you all know by now, I am a professor at an HBCU currently. And I want to say this respectfully and say this up front. About half of my students should not be sitting in my classroom. And I say that every single semester. And here's the truth. It's not because they're not smart. No, no, no. It's not because they don't belong in higher education. but because a four-year degree is not the right path for every single person. Some of them should be in trade school. Some of them should be learning a skill. Some of them are walking out with $40,000 in debt for a path that was never, ever built for who they are internally. Today, I want to talk to those students. Today, I want to talk to those parents and to anyone watching this that who feels stuck in a job that is not paying enough.
Today, I'm going to show you five jobs, five skills that pay six figures or more. And it costs less than a semester at a state school and can be earned within 90 days or less period. Let me say this clearly. So so nobody watching this video, listening to this podcast misunderstands what I am saying today. I am not anti-college. I teach at one. I'm working on my doctorate at one. I firmly believe in higher education. My long term vision is to be the dean. and eventually a president at an HBCU. So when I tell you that college is not for everyone, I'm not saying it from a cheap seat perspective. I'm saying it from the front of the classroom. Make sense? Hopefully you understand this. Because here's the truth.
I see this every single semester. About half of my students light up when we're talking about finance and credit and how to invest and business and strategy to building wealth. They are in the right place. Now, the other half are there because somebody told them they had to be there. Their parents, their high school counselor, their teachers, society, the world. But they are the one that's going to be paying back tens of thousands of dollars for a path that does not match who they are and what they actually want. If you are 17 years old and love working with your hands, college honestly might be a waste of your money.
Why does the host say half of his college students shouldn’t be in his classroom?
If you're 35 years old and you're stuck at a job or 50 years old, stuck at a job, not paying enough, you don't need a four-year degree technically to change your life. Honestly, you just need a skill the market will pay for. Remember what I told you all, wealth is about strategy. Knowing what the strategy is, that is the most important thing. Here's what changed in this country. Employers stopped caring about the diploma and started caring about what you can actually do. And honestly, in my opinion, that's good news. That is the door opening for anyone who has been told they were stuck. Here's the truth. College is for some people. A skill is for everyone. And consumer debt, student loans included, steals from your future and builds someone else's.
So I want to get into these five skills and five jobs that I believe are important for everyone to really understand and see if they're a good fit for you. Here's skill number one, job number one, and that is AI implementation. And before you pass this part of the episode and be thinking, oh, this is for tech people, for tech savvy people. No, no, no, no. Listen to me. Just give me two minutes. Give me two minutes. Knowing how to work with AI tools has become a baseline business skill.
