Chapter 1: What happened during the Nats game last night?
Hey, it's Tony. On today's show, we will chat with Chuck Culpepper about his new job with ESPN and a great story he's written about the Kentucky Derby. And we will talk to Buster Olney about some baseball stuff. But more importantly, we will talk about our 2026 potato crop. But first, commerce.
Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show.
You didn't think I'd been to any games last year? No, I think last year was a year off for you. A leg year, as they say in boat racing. So maybe I'll go to another one. I mean, if they have an afternoon game. Get the parking. Yeah, I got to get the player lot. The player lot's everything. I probably need someone to drive me.
Chapter 2: How do Chuck Culpepper's experiences shape his new role at ESPN?
I'm going to need the player lot. I stayed much longer. I mean, I stayed because they stayed. I would have left in the third. I mean, come on.
This is General George Washington, and you're listening to The Tony Kornheiser Show.
This gets us into the Nats from last night.
You stayed because that was your ride home.
Yes, absolutely.
I thought you started giving me the Chessie look.
No, it was a great ride, too.
The wine?
We got to the ballpark and home much more efficiently than I ever imagined. So I was very happy with that. Appointment viewing for me last night, the Nats, because they hadn't played, you know, on Monday.

Chapter 3: What insights does Buster Olney provide about baseball and planting potatoes?
They were playing the Twins, not a good team. They got their best pitcher on the mound, Cade Cavalli. They're going to win. Cade Cavalli is staked to a 1-0 lead. And then in the second inning with two outs, the roof caves in. You know, he just gives stuff up. I mean, with two outs, you've got to close the thing out. Cade Cavalli did not have a good day.
Then they brought in, eventually they brought in this guy Granillo. Get rid of him. I mean, get rid of him. I mean, when he didn't give up a home run, he gave up something that went to the wall. Is that his name, Granillo? Sure. He's no good.
Chapter 4: What are the current trends in the NBA playoffs?
And you know who else is no good? And I have to say this. And I know Coco was listening because Coco always says, you're ranting about everything. Cabert Ruiz, it's over. It's over. He's had all the opportunity in the world for years and years and years. And you want to say, well, we got him. Was that the Soto trade or was that the Turner trade? Whatever it was, we got him.
So we want to give him a chance. He's a fine defensive catcher. He's not great. He's fine. He can't hit. He's not a major league hitter.
Chapter 5: How does Tony feel about AT&T's customer service?
He always bats ninth and he doesn't deliver anything. Turner and Scherzer. Turner and Scherzer. And so they want to keep him. They want to say, this is what we got. No, he's no good. It's over. You just say that it didn't work. You had all the opportunity. It did not work. The Nats got bombed last night.
So for the last year, you'd sit there and be like, okay, he would always ground into what often was an inning-ending double play.
Double play is the slowest runner in the world.
And what I just looked up, what do you think his ABS challenge success rate is? Well, he's sitting back there, so I would think it's probably...
Chapter 6: What are the best practices for planting potatoes this year?
65, 70. Okay, it's under 50. It's about 38. No, you can't go under 50. And it got to a very slow start, which was surprising. But you saw this last night. I think it was the top of the fifth. He challenges a strike. The guys on the radio are like, this was not even close. Right, right. And then immediately in the bottom, he comes up and grounds out.
This was this perfect little moment that captures everything. He's not.
It's over. I mean, they tried.
Chapter 7: What are the latest updates on Mike Trout's performance?
He tried. It's over. Go somewhere else. See if you can resurrect your career somewhere else. But not here. Not in Washington.
So then I looked up the early stats from AAA for the prospect, Harry Ford, the guy who's on the World Baseball Classic. Batting average is below 200, 179 on base, only 286. They don't need that.
No, they don't need that. How's Dylan Cruz doing? Did you look him up? I did not.
Doesn't play catcher last time I checked.
Yeah, well, all right.

Chapter 8: What questions does Tony answer from the Mailbag?
So a tough night for the Nets.
Yeah, it's a bad night. You know, the relief corps didn't do anything. Their starter didn't do anything.
Did you watch any Votani?
I did not watch Otani. My prediction for Otani was he would pitch six or seven innings, give up one or two earned, strike out eight, and win the game. They did not win. They lost two to one. Did he lose the game? Was he the loser?
I can't remember.
Or did it come after him?
No, I think it came when he was still in there. It was two nothing early. But everything was on the, I mean, it was seven innings pitched. Because I know what I'm doing.
Because I've watched a lot of baseball. So I have some sense.
Did you see the nonsense with Frambois Valdez?
