Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This episode of The Truth includes strong language. The Truth
You just came out of the midnight screening, right?
Yeah. So what did you think of the picture? The movie I just saw was called Occult Is My Passport from 1967. I loved it. It was poetic. It was brutal.
Chapter 2: What does the midnight screening at Cinema Verite entail?
It was stylish.
The midnight screening at Cinema Verite. Every Saturday at midnight, we screen a surprise film of my choice. You only find out what you paid the ticket price for when the lights go down and the credits start rolling.
Disco Godfather.
We just watched a documentary by Orson Welles called F for Fake.
Knights of Caveria. Oh, and did I mention it's only $5? Midnight Screening's appointment viewing for me.
So come on down to Cinema Verite. 1624 Flatbush Avenue, right next to the T-Mobile store. Okay. Halloween 1989. Happy Halloween, boils and ghouls. It's your spooky host, Booey Louie. Jesus Christ, Dad, how many of these did we really need to make? Oh, the wolves are out tonight. Or should I say, the wolf man.
So come on down to Cinema Verite, 1624 Flatbush Avenue, right next to Papa Ziggy's Pizza. Woo! Okay, this tape is unmarked. Okay, the birthday girl is up. So what do you want for breakfast this morning? Chocolate chip pancakes! Oh, speaking of the devil, here's Mom with the chocolate. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas! We'll be playing all your favorite... Oh, fuck! You had to tape over Mom!
Okay, nothing that says family vacation, but thousands of tapes that say November or Animal Attack Marathon or Jack the Ripper Week, volume two of four. Great, so glad we had that on the schedule. What the fuck am I gonna say at this memorial? Me and Bill? Who's Bill?
Hi, I'm Louis Greenblatt. And I'm Bill Frazetti.

Chapter 3: How does the daughter's search for her father's memories unfold?
He spoke in a very pronounced Rooseveltian accent. Your dad called him the Monopoly Man. What were the themes of The Virgin Spring? Do not pop gold.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
Do you have any stories about my mom?
Absolutely. I've got to go right now, but we'll talk more soon in the next few days, alright?
Sure. Of course, I would really love that. Thank you so much, Bill. Bye. Cinema Verite has been a family-owned business since 1979. I want the whole family to be able to come and enjoy a day at the movies. So this Mother's Day, stop by and give Mom the gift of movies.
This weekend we're showing Crossing Delancey, Death Becomes Her, Dirty Dancing, Desperately Seeking Susan, When Harry Met Sally, and Ghost. Kids get in half price and Mom gets in for free.
All right, so who do I talk to? You or the camera?
You can just talk to me, Aunt Rena. It's like a normal conversation. You can just relax.
Yeah, all right.

Chapter 4: What stories reveal the daughter's understanding of her father's life?
He looked him dead in the face. He said, this tux is older than you.
Yeah, that's my dad.
That's back when your parents were first dating. I think his dad wanted to impress her, so he was really upset.
Bill, you have no idea what this means to me. For a really long time, I thought my dad's whole life didn't extend past this theater.
You know, it's so strange hearing your voice.
You sound a lot like... My mom, yeah, people say that a lot, actually.
No, I was going to say Louis. I mean, like your mom, sure, but there's something in your voice. Yeah. It's just bringing up a lot of nice memories. All right, look, I've got to go now, but we will talk more this week. I'm looking forward to meeting you, and I thank you for the flight arrangements, by the way.
Oh, of course. It was my pleasure. And have a safe flight, Bill. I really can't wait to meet you.
Bye-bye.

Chapter 5: How do memories shape our perception of loved ones?
Sundays, cartoon cinema movies. Every night of the week. Check the calendar for details. Okay, Jimmy Stewart in westerns. Howdy, partners. Jimmy Stewart made five westerns with Anthony Mack. Hmm, something's taped over this one. Okay, happy birthday, Dad. Dad?
Who are you? Who are you coming here?
We'll continue in just a moment. To hear all of our stories ad-free, go to thetruthpodcast.supportingcast.fm. And now back to Midnight Screening.
Cinema Verite has been serving classic movies to Brooklyn since 1979. But sadly, our runtime has come to an end. Our last Midnight Screening is this Saturday, May 5th. My father started this theater for one reason. He loved movies. The Midnight Screening was our flagship show, so this final screening will be dedicated to him.
We will be joined by Academy Award-winning filmmaker and my dad's old college roommate, Bill Frazetti. So come on down to Cinema Verite, 1624 Flatbush Avenue, right next to El Camino Tacos.
If it was for anyone else, I wouldn't be here. I'd be at home falling asleep to Landman. Thanks, Aunt Rena. I'll see you in there in just a second. Could you call a lift for me afterwards? There's something wrong with my card.
Of course. I'll take care of it.
Excuse me.
Hello?

Chapter 6: What role does Cinema Verite play in the community?
Okay, yes. I get it, you're all very cultured. Anyway, I loved her in that movie with the murderers on the train.
Murderer on the Orient Express.
All right, okay. You know what, I knew that one actually. Anyway, I wasn't interested in seeing some old black and white Italian film about some chick living on a volcano and being sad. He said, look, just go with me. If you're really bored, we'll leave. I've seen it before. So we go, we sit down, and I'm bored instantly. Oh, just get over yourselves. So I nudge Louis, I whisper, hey, can we go?
And then I see he's crying. So I look up to see what he's crying about. And there's this scene in the movie where these fishermen haul in these big tuna onto their boats and it's very disturbing. They're jamming hooks into the fish and the fish are struggling. They don't cut away. It's like a 10 minute scene.
I look around and I see other people in the audience and they're squirming in their seats while watching it. And you know what? I start crying too. When the movie was over, he just said, I'm glad we can still do this together. Then we got hot dogs. Thank you.
You know, I used to really hate this place. I used to think that my dad just, wasted his entire life here instead of, I don't know, being with his family. But now, I realize that he and this theater were one and the same. Maybe sometimes you've gotta take the people you love exactly as they are. And I love movies because of my dad and sounds like everyone in this room does too. So thank you all.
And without further ado, in the true spirit of the midnight screening, I present to you our feature presentation. Hello and welcome to Cinema Verite. The movie you have purchased a ticket for is about to start. Please refrain from talking during the picture as you might disturb the other patrons. You hear this? That's what you sound like. Please don't ruin the movie.
We all came here to have a good time. Don't be rude.
You know, places like the theater and the story don't survive by accident. People keep them alive because they decide they matter. And the truth works the same way. Listener support helps us pay writers and actors and production costs. And it's essential to keep the show going. You can support us and hear every episode ad-free at thetruthpodcast.supportingcast.fm.
