I was born into a rural farming family in Northern Japan, where I lived for 17 years with my extended family, including grandparents, parents, three brothers, and two sisters. My grandfather, who had an interest in medicine and science, was a great home teacher to me. Thanks to his influence, at the age of eight, I dreamt of becoming a scientist. After finishing high school in Akita, I entered Tohoku University's College of Agriculture in Sendai in 1953. As a student, I was deeply impressed by the knowledge that antibiotics had saved the lives of many patients with infectious diseases. I received a Ph.D. degree from Tohoku University in 1966. At this point, I became interested in cholesterol biosynthesis.
I eventually studied from September 1966 to August 1968 at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. At that time, coronary heart disease was the main cause of death in the United States. The number of people with hypercholesterolemia, a precursor to coronary heart disease, was said to exceed 10 million. My experience of living in New York made me realize the importance of developing a cholesterol-lowering drug. After coming back to Tokyo in 1968, Sankyo Research Laboratories gave me an opportunity to work on a project of my own choosing. I speculated that fungi like molds and mushrooms would produce antibiotics that inhibited HMG-CoA reductase. Compactin seemed to be a wonderful gift from nature.
