Chapter 1: What decisions do parents face during the second trimester?

0.031 - 11.464 David McCullagh

Gender reveals, maternity clothes and weighing up the pros and cons of acquiring a new or a second-hand pram. Just some of the many decisions you and your partner have to make during trimester two. Well, fear not.

In the second part of our guide to having a sustainable pregnancy, we're about to give you some advice on how to navigate all the choices and decisions that come with this stage of pregnancy. Broadcaster and sustainability influencer and mother-to-be, Fionnuala Moore. Good morning.

25.521 - 26.001 Fionnuala Moran

How are you?

0

26.021 - 27.523 David McCullagh

I'm great. How are you? More to the point.

0

27.503 - 38.667 Fionnuala Moran

We're surviving. We got through the hottest May on record. Shout out to anyone who had to do that in their third trimester. Immense respect for them. But yeah, we've been having a lot of cool foot baths to get through it all, which has been very good.

38.887 - 39.889 David McCullagh

Everything's going well.

39.909 - 47.706 Fionnuala Moran

Yeah, thank God. I'm getting used like a little internal punching bag now. My husband's granddad, I think it was, was an Irish champion boxer. So I've only myself to blame for that.

47.686 - 61.981 David McCullagh

I knew that heading into this. The genes are coming through already. Now, the first thing we're going to talk about, something that can be a bit contentious. It's a practice that started in America across the Atlantic, gender reveals. You did one last week, did you?

62.221 - 72.632 Fionnuala Moran

Yeah. Now, ours wasn't so much of a reveal in that there was no pink and blue tat all over the place. We didn't cause any environmental disasters, which is a very common side effect of a lot of these parties.

Chapter 2: How can gender reveals be done sustainably?

163.302 - 168.79 Fionnuala Moran

So provided you don't get one that's like two football pitches long and then you've incurred a load of food waste, that's a fun way to go as well.

0

169.13 - 177.762 David McCullagh

OK, now you're at a point where the wardrobe needs a bit of thought and a bit of adjustment for comfort, I suppose. And maternity clothes can be expensive.

0

177.742 - 188.052 Fionnuala Moran

Yes, I think the last time I came into it, I was in my gotten rid of all the waistband era. All of that was gone out of the wardrobe. But yeah, at this stage now, had to dress professionally for a few work bits lately.

0

188.072 - 204.829 Fionnuala Moran

So I've been implementing the bobbin trick a lot, which if anyone isn't familiar, is where you get a little bobbin, stretchy bobbin, and you're going to loop it through your buttonhole. And it's going to give you a few extra weeks, maybe an extra trimester out of the trousers that are already in your wardrobe. So that's a great way to go about things as well.

0

204.809 - 219.963 Fionnuala Moran

And then if you've gone a little bit past the bobbin, maybe you don't trust your bobbin to stretch as far as the bump is going anymore, which is about where I'm at now. Belly bands are another thing you can do. So you can make these out of, if you have any nice stretchy tank tops or string tops, this is essentially folded over the waist of your trousers just there.

220.284 - 232.555 Fionnuala Moran

So they're not going to fall down while you're going about your day. You don't want that in the middle of a work event. But that's one way to do it. Now you can make these if you're handy on a sewing machine as well, or you can buy them too if that's the way to go. But one of the big frustrations that a lot of pregnant people would have

232.535 - 242.648 Fionnuala Moran

It's a very difficult time, like beyond the bump and the boobs and all the obvious bits that are expanding. You're going in different directions all over the place as well. So you really do want to be able to try stuff on if you are buying.

242.668 - 258.57 Fionnuala Moran

And a huge frustration for people is no matter how impressive a retailer's online selection is, none of that maternity stuff seems to be in the high street stores at all. It's very frustrating. So, yeah, gorgeous baby sections. Maternity doesn't exist if you're going into the high street shops, which is very frustrating.

258.59 - 260.432 David McCullagh

So if you're buying online, you don't know whether it fits.

Chapter 3: What are the pros and cons of maternity clothes?

558.316 - 565.633 Fionnuala Moran

And this is the funniest thing. The first thing I think, as soon as we said we were pregnant, I had a journalist being like, are you using reusable nappies? And I was like, I've never changed a nappy in my life. Give us a break.

0

565.613 - 593.899 Fionnuala Moran

moment but I do have some gorgeous ones from Eco Kinley at home that I'm very excited to try and they're like gorgeous little things now and they've got all lovely patterns on them and stuff like that so we'll definitely be giving the reusable nappies a go but I have even seen from the people who sell reusable nappies really honest advice about being like oh try these out to avoid disposable nappies for a day or here or there it's not this all or nothing mentality or this perfection mentality when it comes to sustainability as well it's you're surviving you're not necessarily thriving so you'll do what you can

0

593.879 - 599.793 David McCullagh

OK, well, thanks a million for that. You'll be back with us in a couple of months. What are you going to be talking about the next time?

0

600.034 - 613.546 Fionnuala Moran

The baby bits. So all of that kind of roster of what we can be getting secondhand, where we can be getting it secondhand, what bits you maybe can't get secondhand as well. It's not too long of a list that you can't source sustainably. It is very limited. So people might be pleasantly surprised with how much they can save themselves.

0

613.566 - 621.625 David McCullagh

Brilliant. OK, Fionnuala Moran, broadcaster and sustainability influencer. Thank you so much for joining us and best of luck with the next couple of months. We'll be back after this.
