It's one of the most intense cases I've done in a while, so here we go. Let me take you back to that house. It's a little after 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 28th of 1998, and Tony Scherer is standing by his unopened mail, flipping through his catalogs, thinking about pizza.
His 15-year-old son, Stephen, has gone ahead of him into the house, and he's looking for his mom and his sister. The lights are on in the living room. The TV is going. It sounds exactly like it always does. But then... Stephen glances into the living room, and that is when he sees them. But they're not on the couch. They're not walking around. His mother, Sherry, and his little sister, Megan, are on the floor. And I want you to understand what his first thought was, because it tells you a little something about this family and about Stephen and about being 15 years old. Stephen was the prankster in this household. He was the one who was always messing with his sister. So his first thought in that half a second before his brain caught up was that they'd finally gotten him back.
That Megan and his mom had cooked up some elaborate prank and were going to jump up and start laughing. But they didn't jump up. They weren't moving at all. And as he stood there, it started to sink in. He was looking at blood, real blood on the living room floor. Stephen then walked over to his mom and he touched her and she was still warm. And then he touched his 12 year old sister and she was cold. And that's when he ran. He got to his dad and the words came out. However, they come out in this frantic situation, but he said, they're dead. Mom and Megan are dead. Of course, Tony goes to see for himself. And there is no version of that walk down that hallway that I can make sense of as a person, let alone as a father.
He saw his wife and his baby girl on the floor of that room where they folded laundry and watched TV. Tony calls 911 at 7.09 p.m. And seven minutes later, headlights came up County Road 419 to that house that Tony and Sherry built into a home, with one of them now lying on the living room floor. Before we go anywhere near what happened in that living room, I need you to know who this family is. So I'm going to start with Sherry. Sherry Ann Walker was born on August 18th of 1959 in Portageville, Missouri. Her parents, Earl and Frances Walker, had married back in 1949. And by the time Sherry came along, they already had a house full of boys.
