Chapter 3: What challenges did the film face during production?
With Steven Fenwick and Trevor Long. This is the captain. Brace for impact. Hello and welcome to the best movies you've never seen. My name is Stephen Fennec and I'm the person, I'm the movie person who picks the movies we watch on the show every week and show them for the very first time to my great mate Trevor Long. That's me. Who is building up his movie libraries, movie knowledge.
He's becoming a movie icon.
Aficionado.
He's becoming a movie expert. And plenty of movies we've done. What are we up to? This is episode 200. This is our 236th episode. Wow. So that's a lot of movies you've watched for the first time. Well, this week we've got a cracker. It's the fabulous Baker Boys. Now this is, and a little bit of explicit language too, just a warning for if there's any kiddies in the car. Yeah, they're cool.
Chapter 4: How do the characters of Jack and Frank Baker differ?
Now, this is well and truly in my hidden gems category. This is a fabulous movie, as it says in the title. It was released in 1989, stars Jeff Bridges, his brother Beau Bridges, and Michelle Pfeiffer. It was written and directed by Steve Cloves. Now, the movie, it had a very difficult birth. Right. There's some challenges in the development of the movie. It was initially at Warner Brothers.
They were very enthusiastic. The boss of Columbia Pictures, the boss left to go to Columbia Pictures, so sort of left the film in limbo. There were some A-list actors attached, like Bill Murray. Chevy Chase was thinking about it. They loved Steve Close's screenplay, wanted to make it. Other people got involved.
And Warner Brothers, from Warner Brothers, they took it to another studio who initially declined. But then after a little bit of to and froing, they decided, okay, they're going to go through 20th Century Fox head thought, you know what, we'll give it a limited opening and see what happens.
And it had a really strong box office performance and also resulted in four Academy Award nominations as well. Wow. So it was a major contender at the 1990 Oscars. 1990, right, yeah.
Chapter 5: What role does music play in the film's storytelling?
Now, this is the first time that Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges, who are brothers, have acted in a film together. Really? Yeah. And some of the disagreements between them are based on actual differences they've had over the years. So it was great to see brothers on screen who played by real brothers.
Yeah, that is a cool thing.
That added a massive dynamic to the film. For sure. And I loved how clearly drawn the two characters were of the brothers. But had you ā I'm pretty sure you'd never heard of this movie. Am I right? No, this is the weird thing. The Fabulous Baker Boys rings a bell. Like it's like ā I don't know. I don't know why that term or that the Baker Boys ā I don't know.
There's something about that term. It could be unrelated to movies, though, because I worked in a bakery and I think we might have had an indoor cricket team called the Baker Boys at some point. But anyway, there may be something in my head that's screwing with me there, but I definitely had no idea of this movie, shall we put it that way. So as I mentioned, this had four Oscar nominations.
Chapter 6: How does the film depict the evolution of the Baker brothers' relationship?
So it was nominated. Michelle Pfeiffer was nominated for Best Actress. Right. And she was beaten by Jessica Tandy, who won it for Driving Miss Daisy. Fair. Also, the 1990 Oscars was nominated for Best Cinematography. Okay. Beaten by Glory, so a civil war film starring Denzel Washington. Okay. It was also nominated for Best Film Editing. was beaten by Born on the 4th of July.
That's a Vietnam film starring Tom Cruise. Okay, wow. Yeah, so lost to that. It was also nominated for Best Music Original Score, beaten by The Little Mermaid. Wow. That feels gut-wrenching for them. Four noms, no wins. That was about it. Now, we're going to take a deep dive all the way down the keyboard for The Fabulous Baker Boys.

Chapter 8: What themes are explored in The Fabulous Baker Boys?
Yeah. But they've got a lot of movies there, 30 every single day to choose from. And you can get yourself Fetch at Kogan. Good guys, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi is a Telstra customer. Or you can find out more and get one at FetchTV.com.au. Okay, you have now seen the fabulous Baker Boys. Yes. I know who they are. Yeah, and it was released in 1989, so you've had plenty of time to see it.
It took my time. Glad that you got around to it. So just give us your first impressions. Yeah, I mean, I would say it's a slow burn. It's certainly a slow start. And you kind of, again, without seeing the trailer and understanding what it's meant to be, it takes a while to understand what you're getting into. Do you think it's going to go to something else?
Did you know it had anything to do with music or stage act or anything? You just went in cold. The one person who could have told me gave me nothing. So, yeah, cheers for that. Yeah, I thought I told you, actually. I thought I told you there were two brothers in an act. I think I'd said, listen back to the other show. In an act, maybe.
Yeah, so it's slow, but I think it picks up when Michelle Pfeiffer joins the show. Oh, yeah. But my feedback is that happens too late. Too late. Yeah, I think it was too long to get to that point. Really? Yeah, that could have been half the time. No, that wasn't. I don't think it was too late at all, mate. You needed it. Anyway, we'll talk about that in the top scenes. Yeah, we'll get through it.
Don't you worry. We'll get through it. So what's your social media post here? On this one, brothers in music, dueling pianos, entertaining for decades, but things aren't looking good. So a sexy singer spices things up and changes their futures. Part romance, part family drama. The Fabulous Baker Boys is a hard one to sum up, but perhaps that's why it's so appealing. There you go. Good.
That's positive. It's fairly positive. Stephen's sitting here nervously going, what? I'm nervous because I love this movie, and I told you that it's a cracking movie, hidden gem, and I'm nervous, but anyway. Would you believe, though, I did not see this at the movies. I don't know what was happening. I think I was playing for Souths at the time. It wasn't able to get there.
You actually had your priorities right. So maybe, yeah. But I did discover it on video, and it's been a rewatch ever since. It's been fantastic ever since. In fact, I've always had it on DVD. And I've actually, I've ordered the Blu-ray. I've ordered the Blu-ray.
There's no 4K version, unfortunately, but I've ordered, there's a special edition on Blu-ray that I've ordered that's being sent to me right now. Wow, there it is. In the post. Righto, let's talk about the cast. And Jeff Bridges plays Jack Baker. He was in King Kong, which we've done, the 1976 remake. Oh, okay, yeah. Tron, which we will do.
Mm-hmm.
