How memories can be rewritten, the science behind true crime. All in the mind, forensic. Search for All in the Mind on ABC Listen or wherever you get your podcasts. ABC Listen. Podcasts,
radio, news, music, and more. Just before we start, this episode contains some strong language. Hey, here goes nothing. Um bear with me, I might Just finish this and not go through with it. It's been quite a while since I've done a live.
A woman is sitting in a car on the side of a road in Tasmania and talking to her phone's front camera. She's broadcasting this video live on Facebook.
Probably just lazy but I don't know. Anyway, um been umming and arring about doing this one all day 'cause I wasn't sure, but um Back to Jack.
She's posting an update on Jack McClennan's case to her more than 6,000 followers. She's one of the most active members of the online community that sprung up to look into his disappearance. She's got a kind of alternative vibe with wild orange hair, tattoos on her arms and bangles that shake as she speaks. Her name is Faith to Carlis.
Many of you will think, oh no, I'm I've gone crazy, I've probably lost the pot again, but no, I I assure you it's not that. Um I'm sane.
Faith gets distracted from a livestream for a bit when another car pulls up next to her and starts doing a massive burnout.
Those two. I won't go into all that. This is all about Jack. Long story short You have a penny? Yeah boy.
Faith first began posting online about Jack's case about two and a half months after he disappeared. Since then, it's clear she's become deeply invested in his story and she's actively investigating the case and chasing down her own leads.
There's a couple more names now to add to that batch.
The livestream is blunt and forceful. In an attempt to shake new pieces of information out about the case, she speaks directly to certain people, naming them and putting the pressure on them to come forward and tell Jack's family anything useful.
Can you contact Kelly? Um You can try me but as I said I've got some weird issues going on at the moment. There's no reason why you can't um contact her.
The Facebook Live lasts for around three minutes before Faith signs off with a shout out to both of Jack's parents. We
gotta find Jack for these this family. Well, I'm gonna go now. These boys gonna come out, I'm totally smoked out. But um yeah. Jack made me do this. Love you, Carl. And Ross if you see this mate.
I've been following Faith's videos for a while, and among all the online noise about Jack's case, her posts stand out. A lot of what I've read seems baseless and highly defamatory, and I've seen the way it can hurt people in the real world. But summer face digging has mirrored my own. Like me, Faith's also really interested in Jack McClennan's trip to this drug house in the town of Wandai. And as a search through the swamp of online rumors about what happened to Jack the night he disappeared, There are these names, addresses and other allegations that she's posting which I'm finding hard to ignore. I think it's time I dived into the rumors swirling in the town's round fix crossing to try and sort out what's true and what's not.
I'm Rob Bergen and this is What Became of Jack, the latest season of Unravel.
After Jack McClennan disappeared, police provided updates to the public on a semi-regular basis. But after about three weeks, the updates dried up, and they've only given a handful of public comments on the case since. In that information vacuum, online speculation has spread almost totally unchecked. There are almost a dozen Facebook pages that are provided updates on Jack's case at various points. And the comments under many of these posts are like a free-for-all. People are just wildly speculating on what they think happened to Jack and who they think is responsible. Faith's not the only person fueling this fire, she's just one of a huge cast of online characters who flooded these online spaces.
