What is the new YouTube sharing feature and why is it confusing?
Powders, pills, plunges, everywhere you look, there seems to be a new wellness trend. We all want to feel good, and if there's a way to feel better, I think, wouldn't you want to try it? I would. What's the cost of being well? And why are we so obsessed with it in the first place? That's this week on Explain It to Me. Find episodes every Sunday wherever you get your podcasts.
That's weird. All right, well this is the weirdest thing I've ever I'm not a lawyer. I would not recommend doing this. I This isn't legal advice, but like I wouldn't do this. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I personally would not do this. New soundbite just dropped. Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts, I'm Marquez. I'm Andrew. I'm David. This week it's it feels like the calm before the storm of smartphone season. We have a bunch of different various topics that aren't too gigantic, but that's because we know it's around the corner. It's about to be mid-August and then September. So what do we got? Let's see. A couple different health trackers, including thoughts on Garmin Circa.
Uh Adds your BMWs, that's fun. A new Ford EV truck, that's hopefully more fun. Uh you making Apple add more cross-platform features. We can talk about that and a few other quick hits. But first, did they even test this? I have one for YouTube. Um so we all know that on YouTube you can send each other videos, right? Correct. They recently implemented this very Very weird feature where if you s if you use the share sheet and you send it to a friend, whether it's through Slack, through text, whatever, and they click that link, it is now a special tracking link that knows that the friend sent it to you. Where
So then when you open the link. Now you'll have the video, but below the video, instead of just seeing the comments or the description of the video, you'll see a little reply function, which has you reply directly to the person who sent it to you. Which is really, really dumb.
This whole thing did we talk about sorry to interrupt this. Did we talk about this on the podcast? Because the other day I sent a video in Slack and it like opened a DM with both of you guys. Because you opened it through Slack. But I thought both of you were DMing me and I just assumed it was because we were you were testing a new feature. And I didn't realize it was because I sent the link.
Yeah. This is the other bad thing. Um now yeah, it's it's it's very weird. I we all know that they need YouTube is trying to make itself more of a social media platform. There are better ways to do this. I have suggested implementations such as a recommendation feed where your friends just hit recommend on videos and then it just shows all the videos your friends recommended. Dude, if Instagra okay, if Instagram's main feature is sending each other reels.
Which is what they're trying to copy, which is yeah.
Sort of what they're trying to copy with this, but there should just be a feed of your friend's recommended videos in YouTube.
That's Adam pressing that.
Let me get around to the data.
If that were the case, how would they make money?
Answer me.
It would make a riddle me that. It would keep you on the platform. It would keep you on the platform much longer. Not nearly as much as algorithmic slot, bro. Well, it turns into algorithmic slot, but then you don't know where it goes.
The feature they shipped is way worse. Okay.
This is really stupid. It doesn't
It does seem clear that they're just copying like the feature where you send someone an Instagram reel, which just opens a DM between you. And now there's messages in YouTube. This is the thing that's new.
How did BMW’s Spider‑Man ad surprise drivers and what’s the reaction?
I my theory is they tested this, but only a little bit. They only tested this at 10. Well, they clearly only tested a little little bit, because the actual point of my it did they even test this is that now it opens the video and instead of seeing the comments right below the video or the description, it shows a little like reply to the person who sent it.
