Now, I was listening to Matthew Lloyd last night on Footy Classified and he was a bit sad about the Bombers. And I know there are a lot of supporters out there that are a bit sad about the Bombers at the moment. So I thought I'd get the most optimistic person I know on the program to try and make Essendon feel better about life and that there is hope. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Well, we've got a club and we're in the AFL. And we've won 16 premierships, which is equal most in the history of the game. We've got great colours. And... Whilst we're down the bottom at the moment, we won't be there for long, rest assured. I just remember only 30 years ago, approximately, Melbourne and the Great Hawthorne Footy Club nearly merged. So times happen in clubs' history that's unforeseeable, that you don't realise it will, but it challenges everybody. And it's a club capable of taking on the challenge and getting back up that ladder.

I was doing an ad for DD. Oh, right. DD. Yes, that's what it was all about. Probably been a little bit misconstrued by some of the media boys and ladies. I'd been up to Horsham, Essendon District, you know, country district area, Nattermuck, and I drove back at about 7 in the morning, 7.30 in the morning to get to the game, even though it was a late game, but... Well, I'd like to see them do a bit better, but look, I'm a person who's probably had maybe Essendon's worst loss. I lost to Hawthorne by 24 goals in 92. I haven't lost grand finals, but I'm talking about home and away games. But we won the next week. We lost by 24 goals against Hawthorne. The next week we beat Melbourne. So you can change things around. It's just all about your mental attitude.
you've got someone that was a very, very strong character for you wearing the number seven in the 2000 premiership, Dean Solomon, someone that, uh, how does he get them playing with the same competitiveness and desire and passion that, that he played with?
Uh, look very hard to push your, your own sort of impetus and style into people. It doesn't always work.

Um, You know, like, I mean, there's certain different types of characteristics in people that do or don't like that style of football. Dean was a very competitive beast like myself. You know, we had Harvey, Mark Harvey was a competitive beast along with Damien Harvick, you know, those sorts of likes. So, the Johnson boys, so we, but not everyone's like them. You've got to have a great balance of skill and hard nose and intellect and that's the part in the art of coaching. It's a very, very difficult job, probably more so now than ever before because we've got about 850 players in the AFL now, so we're thinning out the base of how many players.
