And welcome back to the program. Adam White with you on this Monday edition of Waitly. As I've said throughout the course of the morning, Gerard back tomorrow. Gerard is calling the footy this afternoon with Dwayne Russell from the MCG Melbourne and Collingwood to round out the round. Ollie Peake is ringing in from Bangladesh very, very shortly. So we're hoping he'll join us on the program.

42.372 - 58.936 Adam White

In fact, he's ready to go. We're ready for Ollie. Australian cricketer, not Victorian cricketer, Australian cricketer, Oli Peake, joining us all the way from Bangladesh. Oli, welcome. Thanks, Whitey. Thanks for having me on. How are you going? I'm going all right. I don't think I'm going as well as you now. You're an Australian cricketer.

0

60.479 - 76.22 Ollie Peake

Yeah, living the dream over here at the moment. We've just moved to Bangladesh from Pakistan and yeah, the The heat shock has definitely been evident here. It's super humid, but yeah, loving every minute of it over here.

76.58 - 85.491 Adam White

Now, you've played representative cricket for Australia before as an under-19 player. Had you ever been to Pakistan or Bangladesh before?

85.511 - 110.812 Ollie Peake

No, it's my first time over here, but yeah, there's definitely been some similarities to places like India, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, and stuff like that. So I've been able to take a few learnings from over there and brought them in over here. And, um, yeah, I think that's held me in good stead while still learning heaps over here. What's it like to play in a one day international, Ollie?

112.634 - 138.612 Ollie Peake

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Um, running out with the guys that I guess you've grown up watching on TV and, um, yeah, really idolized has been awesome and, Yeah, I really enjoyed it. And even playing against some guys like Shaheen and Barbara Azam and stuff like that has been, yeah, really cool. And to see how into it the Pakistan crowd got was amazing.

139.132 - 143.017 Ollie Peake

But, yeah, great for cricket and, yeah, an awesome experience.

143.598 - 163.005 Adam White

I was watching you late the other night. I was probably more nervous than you were, to be perfectly honest, Ollie. But just that whole cauldron of the Pakistan crowd, the intensity of a one-day international, you know, the Australian team was under pressure. You were going out to bat under pressure. Shaheen Sharifredi bowling rockets and then you got the spin from the other end.

Chapter 2: How does Ollie Peake describe the intensity of playing in a one-day international match?

281.421 - 287.567 Adam White

Are they all part of the journey as well, or do you have to try and just separate that for the moment and focus on the job at hand?

0

289.184 - 313.649 Ollie Peake

No, they're definitely a part of the journey. Yeah, I've been really lucky to have so much support from them. I think probably until I started playing professional cricket, they hardly missed a game that I played. So, yeah, now with all the travel and stuff that goes on, I guess you have to sacrifice a few things. And, yeah, them missing my first couple of games would have been pretty tough.

0

313.689 - 333.67 Ollie Peake

So I've tried to keep them in the loop as much as I could. Mum's actually over in Europe at the moment on a holiday and so she's living her best life and then dad and my brother are back in Geelong. So yeah, trying to keep them in the loop as much as possible and make sure I stay in touch with things that are going on at home.

0

334.331 - 346.545 Adam White

So who do you lean on in the Australian set up there? I know that Chris Rogers had a major impact for you at Victorian level and your Victorian teammates, a lot of the senior guys in the team. But

0

346.525 - 359.823 Adam White

when you go into another new environment and you haven't got your family sort of close by, who has sort of made it as comfortable and had that level of security that you need just to be a young man, let alone a young cricketer?

361.846 - 387.772 Ollie Peake

Yeah, to be honest, everyone's been really welcoming and sort of allowed me to be myself. And yeah, I guess it's been great to get to know all the boys first and foremost. I guess that's when you're, you're playing your best is when you're comfortable around your teammates. Um, but yeah, one that probably stands out is Matt Renshaw. Um, I've been coming into bat, uh, behind him.

387.892 - 406.106 Ollie Peake

So, um, yeah, he's been really good at helping me on the field, calm down and, um, sort of guide me through my first 10 or so balls so that I can, um, Yeah, I guess not feel too much pressure and he's sort of taken that weight off my shoulders. So, yeah, he's definitely helped me out.

406.587 - 416.464 Adam White

Because this can be really a weird experience because especially someone like Matt Renshaw, who doesn't mind saying a little bit out on the field when he's playing for Queensland against Victoria, then all of a sudden you're teammates.

418.027 - 442.225 Ollie Peake

Yeah, no, definitely. I think you realise to probably separate what goes on on the field versus off the field. Yeah, I think I sort of love that about players that they can sort of allow their competitiveness to take over and obviously when everyone's playing state cricket, are desperate to win for their team. So, yeah, nothing like that really fazes me too much.

Chapter 3: What lessons has Ollie learned about handling pressure in international cricket?

653.715 - 664.015 Ollie Peake

Um, yeah, there's, there'd be plenty of those, um, situations, but I guess one thing that stands out is, um, playing spin like, um,

0

664.703 - 690.913 Ollie Peake

I guess a lot of people talk about sweeping and in Australia you might not necessarily need it too much but as soon as you get over to these conditions you sort of realise that that's a massively important part of playing spin and I reckon that's one thing I can keep knuckling down on back in Australia at Victoria training just so that I'm well set up if I do come back into these conditions eventually.

691.433 - 710.556 Adam White

And you've got Todd Murphy, Victorian teammate, that's joined you over in Bangladesh. Hopefully both of you can get out there together and represent your country. So proud of what you're doing, Ollie. Congratulations on being selected and particularly that performance in Game 2. Fingers crossed that it continues to go well for you as we get to the matches against Bangladesh.

0

711.498 - 727.355 Adam White

Thanks a lot, Whitey. Thanks for having me on. No problems at all. Ollie Peake joining us on SEN, part of the Australian team for those matches against Bangladesh and also in Pakistan. So while we didn't have success against Pakistan, Pakistan winning two matches to one. It is a relatively inexperienced team.

0

727.375 - 743.968 Adam White

There's a few stars that aren't playing, which gives opportunities for someone like Ollie to be exposed at international level. We'll take our final break and wrap things up on Waitly for Hayonde. I said that wrong again. I say that wrong all the time. Hyundai, Hyundai, Hyundai. Wait a minute for Hyundai. We'll be back after this.
