What did Chris Davies reveal about Josh Fraser being invited into Carlton’s coaching process?
The day on SEN started with Chris Davies from Carlton telling Gary and Tim that Josh Fraser was being invited into the process to be the next coach of the Blues. We deployed Sam Edmund out to Princess Park to find out what the interim coach had to say. Sammy is here for Alex Scott and staff to sell your livestock or sell your home. Sam, welcome.
Jared, good to be with you. From Icon Park, the boys are training out here, Carlton, in front of me, and we've just heard from Josh Fraser. What did he say? Well, you can never accuse Josh of being overexcited, I don't think, Gerard. Measured, considered are the words he used.
What did Sam Edmund report Josh Fraser said at his press conference about the invitation?
He'd be good at a poker table, actually. So as you just touched on there, despite Chris Davies telling Gary and Tim that the invite had been extended to be part of the final phase of the Carlton coaching search, the interim coach is still not committing. He said he was grateful, but he needed to take some time to consider whether he's going to be a part of that or not, Gerard. When will he decide? That's a very good question, and we did put to him, well, look, the calendar is ticking away here, Josh. Realistically, how long do you think you've got? And he said, well, look, I've probably got about a week to decide here. He's got a game front of mind at the moment against Brisbane at the weekend, of course, and we know that the Blues are about to, before the end of next week, commence the final phase of these formal coaching presentations.
So the clock is ticking. I think you'd expect after the Lions game for Josh Fraser to formally put his hand up, and surely he will, Gerard. It's inconceivable, isn't it, that... he would reject this sort of opportunity, having gone 8-2 in the interim phase and done just about everything else you can in the game to prepare himself for this opportunity. But he won't be rushed.
Chris Davies gave a layer of detail that we hadn't heard before around the conversations that had been had. What did Josh say around the internal conversations?
Yeah, look, he said it was nothing sophisticated. It was nothing fancy. Just a question was asked, would you be willing to go through the process? And he said, I'll need to take some time now to go away and have a think about that. He said he'd speak to his mentors, his confidants, clearly his family. And we said, well, what possibly, Josh, would you still be the reason behind you umming and ahhing at this stage, given everything you'd achieved? Look, he did make comment that, look, in the chair is in the chair and you're exposed to a lot, but you're not exposed to everything. He said he was really aware of that. He did make special mention of Carlton being a unique club, a big club and a passionate club.
And I don't think that was him talking himself out of it. It was just more, these are big decisions, aren't they? And particularly when it comes to a big club as this. So he's well aware that he's seeing a lot. It's fast-tracked the excitement, as he said, in terms of his ambitions to be a senior coach. But it's not everything. So he said he'd been considered and measured all the way through his coaching journey. And even with being potentially on the precipice of fulfilling a career coaching dream, Gerard, he won't quite bite yet.
Adam Simpson told us that he hopes he does take the invitation up and participate in the process. What else are you seeing at the Blues?
Training in sunshine here at the moment. I was just having a look at Cody Walker. I know this is one for the end of the year, but gee, Cody Walker looks good, Gerard. But I digress. Harry Mackay training and training fully. So that would be music to the ears of Carlton supporters after he missed last week with that knee injury, that meniscus strain, of course. Now it's heavily strapped, that knee, but he's doing everything at the moment. And Josh Fraser did say after we hit him with all the coaching questions that He felt Harry Mackay would put his hand up for selection. So that's a big in. That's probably the big selection news down here for this week, I think.
