What is the Legend’s Game and why is it important for prostate cancer awareness?

Gerard Whateley 0:00
The 4-20 Legends game for the Australian Prostate Centre, Thursday, August 27. Dusty, Buddy, Little Gaz, Cyril at Marvel Stadium. Great concept, great cause, and it needs great partners, and that's what this game has. Mark Harrison is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Prostate Centre. Mark, it's great to have you in the studio. Thanks, Gerard. Thomas Zabo is the CEO of Pepperstone Group. Thomas, welcome aboard.
Tamas (Tomas/Tamas) Szabo 0:25
Thank you.
Gerard Whateley 0:25
Tell us, well, give us the build up, Mark. This is coming together so incredibly well.
Mark Harrison 0:31
Yeah, Gerard, I think after the benefit of last year of 2.2 million people watching it on TV, 32,000 people in the crowd, we're super excited about this year. An amazing lineup. We didn't think we could get better, but the players have been so giving of their time. So really excited about what it will be this year.

How did last year’s success shape the excitement for the 2026 Legends Game?

Mark Harrison 0:45
It's only three weeks away, so it's very close.
Gerard Whateley 0:47
We've had a glimpse, loved it. I feel like momentum has grown.
Mark Harrison 0:51
I think you're right. And I think the players' engagement this year is even another level again. So I think we'll see that shine on the night. I couldn't think of anything better than seeing Cyril passing to Croft, passing to Buddy. What a highlight reel that'd be.
Gerard Whateley 1:06
And Thomas, is Pepperstone Group welcome aboard?
Tamas (Tomas/Tamas) Szabo 1:09
Why is this such a natural partnership for you? A number of factors. I mean, Pepperstone has a predominantly male audience and I think it's a great audience to spread the word about the risks of prostate cancer. I personally have had prostate cancer and very fortunately came out the other side unscathed. And unfortunately, a lot of people don't Don't don't come out like that and it's very important that we spread awareness and supporting the cause I think is really really important and I've been personally involved in raising money for prostate cancer through the biggest blokes lunch in Melbourne since around I think 2018 And we've now amalgamated that into the EJ Whitten lunch and I've been involved with mark for many years now in raising money and awareness for prostate cancer and

Why is the partnership between Pepperstone and the Australian Prostate Centre a natural fit?

Gerard Whateley 1:55
So today's initiative is the virtual jumper for the Legends game. So tell us about it.
Mark Harrison 2:01
Correct. So the virtual jumper is a way for everybody to get engaged in it and help us raise vital funds to do further research and care. I think as Tamas has alluded to, he's been a great advocate for this country, both from his own journey and spreading the message. So... The virtual jumper is a really simple concept. We need somebody to go online to legendsgame.com.au. Quickly, in one minute, you can personalise your jumper and share that with a legend in your life and donate vital funds to help us conduct further research.
Gerard Whateley 2:27
Yeah, so the ambition here, the possibilities with such a big television audience and so much awareness and to be able to tap into that for a greater cause is what might it lead to?
Tamas (Tomas/Tamas) Szabo 2:37
Yeah, look, you know, as I said, spreading awareness. But I mean, the jump is such a great vehicle, I think, for us to be involved in, but also for people to get involved in. It's like, you know, sharing it with someone else. A lot of people have been touched by prostate cancer, both female as well, when they've got their fathers, their brothers, their relatives involved. So I think it's this great community spirit that it's driving around spreading the awareness of prostate cancer.

How does the virtual jumper initiative work and how can listeners participate?

Tamas (Tomas/Tamas) Szabo 3:01
And it's not always, you know, the father or the brother that takes the initiative to go and get tested. It's the hassle that they get from their family, which I think is really helping drive all that sort of awareness.
Mark Harrison 3:12
And I think, Gerard, as Thomas has said, with Pepperstone Crypto, what we can do is take this to another level nationally with the audience. So if we can get out to all the legends in our lives and protect them by donating through a simple jumper, then that would be a great outcome for us to advance the work we're doing.
Gerard Whateley 3:26
And what is the work that's being done that people have a very tangible stake in?
Mark Harrison 3:32
Correct. So our major focus is trying to give care to men to give them a longer, better quality life and advance the research.
