Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.55 - 3.073 Gerard Whateley

Whiteley on SEN.

0

4.047 - 10.013 Unknown

The Monday means test after the events of round eight. Adam Simpson, hello. Good morning, Gerard.

0

Chapter 2: What insights did Adam Simpson share about Round 8 of the footy season?

10.053 - 13.196 Unknown

Been a big 24, 48, 72 hours.

0

13.596 - 24.947 Gerard Whateley

What a round of footy and all the different ways that it breaks. When we were corresponding last night, your email came back, suggested you were heading to bed. I was. And then Damien Hardwick went with this.

0

25.408 - 38.385 Adam Simpson

We sort of knew that the dew would come in, I think by eight o'clock, there's going to be 90% humidity, which lends itself to those sort of games. And, You know, the 7.30 time slot on a Sunday night probably. Normally in bed at halftime, but these time of games.

0

38.805 - 58.143 Unknown

Well, Dimmer, that's exactly where I was. It was hard to stay up. Like, it's a long weekend. So I'm not sure the Sunday night games cut it. When there's only two games for the day and you're away until 3 o'clock for the first one and then there's an hour or two break between the second. I don't know. I know there was a public holiday in Queensland. I sort of get it.

0

58.223 - 77.949 Unknown

But a couple of things about yesterday. You know, you can only mow the lawn so many times, Gerard. And then the game itself up there was so wet and slippery, and that's what happens when you get the night games in this time of year in Queensland. So, yeah, I'm with you, Dimmer. I'm with you. But I did catch up on it all, and it was an exciting round. The first two days were the best. Yeah.

77.969 - 99.64 Unknown

The Thursday, Friday was like jumping out of our skin come crunch time on Saturday. Yeah. And then there was some indifferent, more up and down stories for the rest of the weekend. All right. We're going to delve into all of them. Start us off with Sinnoh says. Well, I think the top four is locked. We're done. I think lock it in stone. I think the top eight's done apart from maybe one change.

99.68 - 118.221 Unknown

And that's based on history, Gerard. So the history sort of suggests by now. you know, seven out of the eight are locked in. And that's why I think the wildcard round and the top 10 is important because there's four or five sides fighting for that last spot in the eight, but also the top 10 position. So the top four, and tell me if I'm wrong here, mate.

118.241 - 142.004 Unknown

So Sydney, Fremantle, Hawthorne and Brisbane. You agree with that? Yeah, they feel like our four. I think so. Now, we can debate. There could be change, but normally you don't see too much. The next four is Geelong, Melbourne, Collingwood and St Kilda. Sorry, the Suns, Geelong, Melbourne, Collingwood. Suns, Geelong, Melbourne, and Collingwood. That rounds out the top eight right now.

142.525 - 146.213 Unknown

So history will say there's one change out of that group.

Chapter 3: How did the recent games impact team strategies and player performance?

146.233 - 169.074 Unknown

So just outside the top eight, you've now got, because there's 10, you've got Collingwood, Um, sorry, you've got St Kilda, North Melbourne, Adelaide, and the Bulldogs. They're the next four. So, you know, that's why that top 10 is really important. And then beneath that, you've got, um, uh, beneath Port Adelaide, you've got Giants and then, and then you're done. The bottom four's there.

0

169.094 - 190.16 Unknown

So I think we're done the top eight. I think it's pretty, it's pretty locked. There might be one change. So at the moment, Collingwood are eighth and St Kilda are ninth. That's normally where there's sort of a bit of a debate. You do have the Bulldogs sitting back there and then you've got the Giants who the coach sort of sounded pretty casual about in his press conference. No, no, we're fine.

0

190.28 - 192.762 Unknown

This is us. We'll just come good. Yes.

0

192.843 - 217.384 Gerard Whateley

Which is a great mindset. You can't give it away after eight. This is the, whether you like it or not, this is the, charm of nine and 10 being live is the giants can actually plot out a run to, to a wild card position rather than the, the chase to grab eighth place is, is a long way off for them, but nine and 10 is very much in sight.

0

217.364 - 233.415 Unknown

Yeah, well, there's six teams chasing nine and 10. So at the moment, I think it's St Kilda North, Adelaide Bulldogs, Port Adelaide and the Giants are all fighting for two spots, which I think's healthy because we'll get to around 15. I promise you around 15, we'll really know everything.

233.395 - 249.312 Unknown

And then those last seven or eight weeks, we can discuss this piece and whether they get to a grand final or not. I don't think that's the real challenge of it. It's to keep things more motivated for players and clubs. And then it's also to have a day in the sun over the wildcard weekend. So I'm looking forward to that.

249.292 - 263.345 Gerard Whateley

Simo says the structure of things is well in place after eight rounds. The big issue is inevitably Carlton here. The manner of what is happening and then what comes next. So maybe zero in on the manner of what's happening first.

263.365 - 277.138 Unknown

It's a challenge. I'm not a spokesperson for Carlton either. I understand the frustration at the moment. We can talk about Michael and what he's going through because I have lived that a little bit. But what's happening in these second halves, it's really hard to put a finger on because you think they would have worked it out by now.

277.49 - 295.923 Unknown

And, and every, every week, there's one common denominator, which I think is around the center, center ball ups. But, you know, the Saints, there's only four stoppages in that third quarter for the whole quarter outside of the center bounces or center ball ups. So, you know, dealing with momentum there, the North game was pressure. There was a heap of pressure put on.

Chapter 4: What are the challenges faced by Carlton this season?

794.501 - 802.129 Gerard Whateley

Whiteboards are regrettably on our agenda and there's pressure index and PFI as well. The Monday Means Test with Adam Simpson.

0

802.149 - 809.477 Adam Simpson

Want to have your say? Ring Gerard on 1300 736 736. Now, back to Waitley.

0

810.25 - 835.633 Unknown

Bergwin did well. Now to Butters. Through on the boot. Here's Millerer. They took his last goal of him. They try and take the ball off him there. Kern. Here's Cook. Can Cook answer? Cook can answer. Oh my goodness. What a game. A game of twist and turn. Oh my goodness. The cookie monster has arrived. Well played. Well done Adelaide. A gripping game. An incredible game.

0

835.985 - 846.281 Gerard Whateley

Best bit, hands down, for Tobin Brothers Funerals, a family-owned business since 1934. The climax of the showdown was something else.

0

846.982 - 857.398 Unknown

There is no more drama in our game than the showdown. There's always something, and Ken helped build that up with his, what was he doing that five and one? What was that? It was zero five.

857.418 - 858.62 Gerard Whateley

Zero five, and now it's one.

859.061 - 873.161 Unknown

One and zero. He's good at sign language, isn't he? The aeroplane or the... 0-1. But, yeah, it's just the whole drama of it. I mean, it wasn't a great game, but the last quarter was just sensational. You just sort of knew something was going to happen.

873.201 - 898.065 Unknown

Then the arc got involved, as you would have enjoyed, and then the umpiring got involved, and then Miller, that last centre bounce when Port hit the front, and then, I don't know, they crossed Takari on the bench and – It just felt like they thought, I know they weren't thinking this, but do you reckon they looked like, oh, how good's this? I've never lost a showdown.

899.047 - 916.511 Unknown

I'm not saying he did this at all, by the way, but it was like the euphoria of that goal and that was a great couple of stoppages and we can go into more detail on that if you need to. But the other end was, okay, we've got a minute to win this from Adelaide's point of view. And they went into this... Um, center bounce structure that I've seen before.

Chapter 5: How do the current standings affect team morale and expectations?

1413.03 - 1438.712 Gerard Whateley

Grundy has more of the footy than Gorn. Gorn has always just had Grundy covered. They are the two, but... Gorn's got the eight all Australians. The two that Grundy has, Gorn was in the team. So he's never displaced him, but they are the natural measuring points throughout an era. And when they're both at the peak of their powers, it was a great part of the game.

0

1438.692 - 1458.407 Unknown

Well, I thought Gawne's, he's been going forward a lot more now, hasn't he? So I think there's, it's hard to debate that as much as perhaps just head to head, see how we go, me versus you, let's have a swing. It didn't feel like it was that type of day where it was the old five versus Dangerfield type of matchup. So yeah, it's, you could say it was pretty even.

0

1458.728 - 1473.917 Unknown

I mean, in the end, Grundy's had 26 possessions. You know, with his 45 hit outs. So it's a pretty good game. And I don't know, I know Gorm wasn't in the ruck the whole time, but, um, yeah, look, I just, just some, so much talent on the ground yesterday. And it's really interesting.

0

1473.937 - 1493.486 Unknown

You wouldn't think that Melbourne versus Sydney last year, when you're talking about it, you're thinking Petrarca and Oliver, obviously, but. Yeah, that felt like a final type teams. You know, obviously Melbourne have got a bit more work to do, but yeah, those two are so critical for both the successes for both sides and already King's working on what's next, I think, a little bit.

0

1493.546 - 1503.057 Unknown

We're just pushing the Gorn magnet around a little bit more than perhaps we've seen in the start. Do you reckon he's happy with it, Gorn? He kicked the goal when he went forward, but do you reckon...

1504.184 - 1527.712 Gerard Whateley

You reckon he's enjoying it? It's a good question because he is always the first one to say, I've got an ego. He wants to be the best ruck in the competition. Yeah. So. No, it is. It's a good, but he is mindful of being able to play his best footy at the end of the year. So I think if they made a final. He would want to ruck 100% of the time.

1527.732 - 1548.119 Unknown

Yeah, I think so. Well, that's the challenge. Yeah, well, that's the challenge. I mean, he's had 22 hit outs himself, seven clearances and 18 possessions. He's had a pretty good day. And he didn't ruck all day, obviously. So, yeah, it's just great to see the best go against the best. I still think Jackson's got them both pipped with his game on the weekend. Yeah.

1548.139 - 1551.403 Unknown

But some really high-end talent rucks at the moment. There's just not enough of them.

1551.738 - 1553.781 Gerard Whateley

Malcolm Rosas, seven goals.

Chapter 6: What strategies are teams employing to manage player fatigue?

2338.467 - 2357.887 Unknown

moment leaders in the competition with what he does, whether it's a spoil, whether it's leave your man to get it done, whether it's kicking a goal off the side like he did last year. So I think their on-field leadership is exceptional, but dealing with just a little momentum swing when, okay, you just slightly pull back a little bit once you're three or four goals up.

0

2358.128 - 2363.874 Unknown

So how they deal with that, how they stay predictable in those type of moments, I think that's the next phase I'll work on, but they're in a good space.

0

2364.114 - 2366.196 Gerard Whateley

And then the second, Justin Longmuir?

0

2366.176 - 2386.513 Justin Longmuir

said all along that you want to have multiple strings to your bow as a footy team like you don't want to have good teams to just take away what an aspect of your game if you've only got if you if you've only got one string so we want to be able to yeah be flexible the way we play and then win in multiple ways and i think yeah we probably did that again tonight um yeah

0

2386.898 - 2395.19 Justin Longmuir

Sometimes we've scored from the back half, sometimes we've relied on clearance, and sometimes we've been able to do it from our front half a bit more. So I think the good teams are able to do that.

2396.392 - 2412.214 Unknown

And that's why they're a good side. That's the evolution, and it was a bit of Bayshore, Sorong or Buss there for a little while, and their evolution with their maturity, I think they're well-rounded in all aspects of personnel. It feels like their mids, forwards and backs, there's no massive flaw there, is there?

2412.194 - 2428.101 Unknown

And the other way they're playing, they kick three goals, one from D50 turnovers on the weekend. And then next week they might kick 10 goals from the front half or they might beat you at clearances and score some stoppages. And then there's always a day when talent just takes over as well. So it's not strategy.

2428.301 - 2448.149 Unknown

So I feel like when you can win in multiple ways, and that top four we spoke about at the start of the show, those four sides, Hawthorne, Sydney, Fremantle and obviously Brisbane, can beat you in, you take that away, we'll beat you this other way. And that's the ultimate game plan. When you're not number one at one thing, as we've spoken, you're sort of top four at everything.

2448.209 - 2450.712 Unknown

And they're living in that world at the moment.

Chapter 7: How do the Bulldogs plan to improve their performance in upcoming matches?

3215.24 - 3220.527 Gerard Whateley

We've got Tom Morris and then the wisdom and experience of Robert Craddock coming up in the next hour.
