But I think it's a great appointment. especially when you sit back and talk about the younger Bouguet that will come through the doors in Hobart over the next few years, plus also what he's been through as well. You listen to the people at Port Adelaide, the connection, the relationship, the trust that he had with the likes of butters, wines,
um and these kind of guys but then also you go through his journey he's a country boy at heart um i remember he coached against colac for camperdown um back in i think it was late 90s um the the what he experienced uh with the gold coast when he was there the the rights and the wrongs that the gold coast sons did when when they started to build their list their culture and to be honest that's still haunting them to today so um Yeah, you sit back and go, congratulations. I still feel for Bucks. I feel for Bucks because he was the first one to put his hand out there. From 18 months ago, it sounded like Bucks was the one getting groomed for that job, went back into Cat Land down there to coach, to obviously sharpen his tools with one of the best coaches of the modern era.
But it's one of those ones, if you put your hand up too early, people are going to find ways to talk you out of it or they'll almost have you there as a fallback. Let's look who else we can go for. So I do feel for Bucks as well.
He loses nothing in my eyes through the process. I think I'll talk about this as the morning goes on, but to see the way he committed so wholeheartedly to an idea and then put himself through upskilling to be ready to take it. So he's doing the work, he's on the tools, rather than marking him down as a future prospect. He rises in my estimation for what he's been prepared to do.
And I think other clubs... 100% will talk about and think about the same way because obviously the Tassie one it's a different beast it's about guiding and I guess moulding younger players and I guess Bucks was always known as that hard this is how you get the best out of yourself this is how I got the best out of myself but he's changed a lot of coaches in time once have had a crack or even from players to coaches and into the second time they learn a lot they mature they understand it's not all about being the same person to everyone you need to be able to adapt and understand that players come from different backgrounds but There's no doubt other clubs will be out there understanding what sacrifices Bucks made to get another shot at coaching a team.
In the various things that were said yesterday, the idea of teaching them early, that was what most chimed for you?
Well, my biggest thing is I sat back from opposition club and watched how they built Gold Coast and how they built GWS. And you sit back and they were so far apart from how they went after different tactics. Gold Coast needed to... uh needed to make a real big lot a lot of noise earlier and got car michael hunt just because of the pr stunt in gold coast trying to make uh just a little bit of a bump in the in the news up there in in a football uh orientated territory i'm sorry a league i call it football now being up there in a league um and union focused area then they went and got the best player so you look at this and it's probably two things that yes tick the box that's how you're going to get the most getting the best player from geelong who'd won premierships on a brown loan and put him up there
But does that lead to success? I think the best way out of the two was the way Gold Coast, as the way the Giants had followed with their pathway, and that was go and get some former players in McDonald, in Power, in Brogan, these kind of guys, to be able to teach the younger guys coming through.
