Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 8.819 Gerard Waitley

I'm Gerard Waitley. Here's a snapshot of Thursday, May 14. The Eye of the Coach with Adam Simpson towards Geelong's adjustable game styles.

Chapter 2: What insights does Adam Simpson share about Geelong's game styles?

9.419 - 29.076 Adam Simpson

Well, Geelong, they're going to turn up tonight for the interstate games. I mean, they won Gather Round against West Coast, but the other two games they played away, it's been non-existent Geelong. You know, halfway through the second quarter, and it's like, well, let's just pack up. So that was the opening round against the Suns, and then it was the Port game a few weeks ago. So...

0

29.545 - 43.386 Adam Simpson

I don't think that's going to happen tonight. I think there's a bit more... It's funny with Geelong. They're hard to read. They're doing things either well in advance of other clubs or they're going to get caught out. So, for example...

Chapter 3: How does Geelong's performance in interstate games impact their strategy?

43.636 - 63.096 Adam Simpson

Clearly, their style of play is tweaked a lot more than most teams on who they play. So Collingwood last week, they take them on. We're going through the corridor. We think we can get out the back pretty quickly. We must have seen some evidence throughout the season from other sides. Let's do that. They're not doing that against Brisbane. It's a different strategy. So...

0

63.076 - 81.103 Adam Simpson

I heard, yeah, that we've spoke a few weeks ago about they've got three styles. It's the home style, there's MCG style and there's away style. And we haven't seen anything with the away style yet. So I wonder what Chris is going to bring tonight. Because I know what Brisbane are going to bring. I don't think they change too much, do they?

0

81.123 - 85.61 Gerard Waitley

And Simmo on the possibilities for Carlton's caretaker coach, Josh Fraser.

0

85.991 - 89.556 Adam Simpson

What do you want? What do you want from me? Do you want me to expose some younger talent? Do you want me?

0

90.278 - 118.058 Adam Simpson

um i'm thinking this um and so there's a negotiation i would have thought about how you want to play because you can't give the reins to someone and go over to you you got 14 weeks see how you go there's going to be a little bit of to and fro and that's the restrictions that it's hard to judge and you this interim coach on can he coach and i think he can but there's going to be some things there where you want to play this player but you know the the direction is to do this so there's there's conversations around that um

118.392 - 135.13 Adam Simpson

that they've got to deal with. So that's the challenges and the opportunities. Just getting the feet under the desk for 14 weeks and experiencing what it's like to handle the media, handle your strength and conditioning team, handle the reserves, handle a player who thinks he should be in the seniors, but he's not.

135.811 - 154.86 Adam Simpson

The biggest thing, the biggest change in elevation from assistant coaches to senior coaches is decisions. You have to make 20 to 30 a day. And it's a phone call after a phone call after a phone call about, When do you want training next Thursday? We're traveling. Do you want to go early? Do you want to go late? All those things, the dietary requirements. You go, I don't care.

154.88 - 173.592 Adam Simpson

Just make a decision. And then when that decision's made and two weeks later, you go, what did we do that for? And they go, you said just make a decision. So there's sort of, you can micromanage your way out of it or you can be too, I don't care, do what you want. So there's lots of things you have to do, but the biggest one is making decisions. That's the biggest head scratcher.

173.612 - 178.218 Gerard Waitley

Brenton Sanderson thinks the grand final rematch is too late to be strategically relevant.

Chapter 4: What are the different styles of play discussed by Adam Simpson?

224.579 - 239.479 Brenton Sanderson

But yeah, it is too late, I feel, for us to get really excited about it because it feels like there's enough of the season gone now that this is just Geelong versus... So the grand final rematch buzz and excitement doesn't feel like it's legitimate.

239.8 - 256.821 Shannon Gill

Shannon Gill reminded us of the 100 years of football film 30 years ago on Know Your History. We learned a lot from the film. There's things in the film that have become part of the footy language today that were not known before the film. This could have been...

256.801 - 281.239 Shannon Gill

The degree of difficulty to put together a documentary that encompasses 100 years and put it into two hours is a high degree of difficulty, and they managed to pull it off, which is to be commended. Centenary year is coming in 1996. The AFL and Channel 7, who are the broadcasters, they get together and say, well, we need to commission a documentary to commemorate the 100 years of the league.

0

281.219 - 302.343 Shannon Gill

and we'll screen it on Channel 7. So that was the deal that was put together. At the same time, David Barham is a sports producer on television. Viewcast. Viewcast was his company, yes. So freelance producer who'd done all sorts of things, but was still relatively young in his career, and he would go on to be a doyen of sports broadcasting in this country.

303.184 - 306.147 Shannon Gill

And Victoria has reappointed coach Chris Rogers.

306.868 - 317.503 Chris Rogers

It's an interesting life when you're... when you work contract to contract and, um, I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who do it, but it, you know, there's always a little bit of unknown uncertainty about, uh, what's next.

Chapter 5: What challenges does Josh Fraser face as Carlton's caretaker coach?

317.543 - 337.441 Chris Rogers

And, and in cricket, it's, it's, it's kind of not like you can go around the corner and get a job there. You know, it's, it's sometimes you're thinking, I might have to move overseas and go elsewhere. So then you have to pick up the family and do that. So there's, there's those kinds of challenges. Um, but I'm not going to complain too much. I get to coach cricket for a living.

0

337.481 - 367.389 Chris Rogers

It's, it's a pretty good life. You think deeply about these kind of things and where you are as a coach as well. But one of the overriding factors was the fact, I think this group is really, really starting to come into a special time. You don't achieve what they did, even still probably the youngest group in the competition group. without unbelievable talent and skill and commitment.

0

367.409 - 391.283 Chris Rogers

So I feel like there's a lot more to come with this group. And one of the real special, hopefully, bits of the journey will be seeing a number of these players finish. further their careers going on to, you know, play for Australia, do other things. And you kind of want to be on that journey. You want to be there when, you know, you see them get the baggy green or something like that.

0

391.303 - 401.676 Chris Rogers

That's going to be, you know, very, very special moments. And we're getting a bit of a snapshot with that with Ollie Peake. But yeah, that's something that I'm really looking forward to.

0

401.656 - 409.911 Gerard Waitley

And that's just a snapshot. The full program and all interviews are available
