Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
I'm Gerard Waitley. Here's a snapshot of Thursday, May 21. Adam Simpson on the search for identity at Hawthorne.
What is their identity?
Chapter 2: What insights does Adam Simpson share about Hawthorne's identity?
They've got a unique way of playing when Gunston plays in terms of offense and he's disconnected forward. We've all spoken about that now. And the two rucks, how's that going? You know, the system around we play three talls or two talls or whatever it is, and we'll just replace the role. And I was big on that back in the day.
But if the replacement's just not quite up to it, what can we do a little bit differently? It's getting wet. We see Adelaide with their tolls as well. And then there's opposition. There's system versus strategy. We spoke about this last night on 360. It's just crept a little bit, the coaching narrative around, we need to do a bit more on the opposition.
It used to be, here's the one thing we'll take away. Just protect the corridor and play our way. I think it's... With analytics or AI, I don't know what it is, Gerard, but there's a little bit more strategy now when it comes to the opposition and I wonder what Sam and Hawthorne will do to Adelaide tonight.
And Simmo gave us the best clubs at scoring from the centre ball up.
Well, the best four from last year to this year are Brisbane, Geelong, Sydney and St Kilda. They've really, they've worked it out. Okay. And this is the new rule, the jumping rule. You know, you don't have to have someone standing the goal scorer anymore. So even those type of structures in front of the play and also how you defend. So what are you doing with your wingers?
How do we deal with momentum? All those things. So Brisbane, Geelong, Sydney, the Saints are the best. And the biggest drop off is Hawthorne, Essendon, Bulldogs and Collingwood. They've dropped off the most from last year. So very small sample size. It's a coaching thing more than anything. But yeah, that's what they get to get to work on.
I've heard Sam talk about they started well on the weekend and they finished poorly out of the middle. And I just think it's got so much to do with success, these centre ball ups.
And Collingwood and the Bulldogs, the numbers marry up with the eye test there, don't they?
Because that has sat over them. Collingwood elastic clearance differential. So they've got some things to work on there with all the other stuff they're working on. But that's one of the, and Gold Coast, strangely, they're poor at their clearance rate as well.

Chapter 3: How does coaching strategy evolve with analytics and AI?
And I think rookies naturally gravitate to him already because of who he is, but he just teaches without ego. He guides, he listens, he makes people happy. I feel so comfortable and valued regardless of who you are. But I guess on the field, and we've been lucky enough to watch his career, just his calmness in a crisis has just been extraordinary.
And I see other players and coaches panic, but for him it just feels like the movie The Matrix. The game just slows down around him and he just thinks through tactical challenges in real time as good as anyone as I've ever seen.
And Sandoz set us up for Geelong and Sydney.
It's hard, isn't it? When you look at two teams that are just moving the ball so well and defending really well. I mean, Fremantle are probably the best defensive club in the competition at the moment. But Geelong and Sydney are not far behind when you look at their defensive numbers. And they've both got such a balanced offensive game plan. So...
When you look at the season, you probably give Sydney the edge, you know, with their offense and defense, timing forward half, inside 50 differential. It sort of leans slightly towards the Swans. But just I think this game being played at Kidinia Park, and I know you told me, Off air, Gerard, that the Swans have got a pretty good record down at Kadenia Park.
But I just think the longer, narrower dimensions compared to the shorter, wider SCG may suit Geelong in this game. But I've got a feeling we might be watching the grand final preview. It's an early call, I know. But these two sides are playing so well at the moment. And I'm going to tip the cats by two goals.
Plus, Shannon Gill recounted when Kevin Bartlett broke the all-time games record.
It happens on qualifying final day. So there's, there's bigger fish to fry for Kevin Bartlett and it's secondary to the importance of the game itself. So it becomes almost a footnote. His breaking the record becomes a footnote to what is potentially the greatest final series ever by an individual. So he, no, no, no one's broken the league record with the, the momentum that KB had.
He kicked six goals in a final on the day he breaks the record. He then kicks eight goals in the second semifinal. And then seven and the Norm Smith medal in the grand final. So nobody's going as well as Kevin Bartlett at the time the record is broken. And as you can imagine, he goes on and plays for another three seasons after that because of how well he's playing.
