Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
I'm Gerard Waitley. Here's a snapshot of Thursday, April 23. Adam Simpson took us back to the Nick Natanui injury in 2018.
Yeah, we had a good run that year.
Chapter 2: What happened during Nick Natanui's injury in 2018?
Obviously, we win the flag, but you don't think that at round 17, we played Collingwood at the G. And just before halftime, Nick had done his knee. And it wasn't as graphic as Darcy, but we're all aware. And so were the media. I didn't react in a way. It was like, let's get this done before we can confront the massive story that was in front of us.
So in the rooms, I think it was just a tap on the shoulder and, you know, at halftime. But we didn't change too much. Yeah. So we didn't let the emotion seep into the rooms or to the players. So looking at the Bulldogs on the weekend, it got emotional really quick, didn't it?
Yeah.
So we all react a little bit differently. We try to keep it business as usual, as best we could. We ended up winning that game, and our players did a lot of work that year on staying in the moment, staying present, because you can drift into what does this mean for the future. So, yeah, we had a good win that day, and then we replaced the role, Gerard.
Yeah, but your recollection of the day. So Beveridge spoke about trauma. And it did, it overwhelmed you in the aftermath?
Aftermatch, yeah. You break down and you, and I think I did an interview and, and it was an emotional piece because you just, then you start to get, God, this guy's done. He's his second knee. And is this it for him? And we're going well. We might have some success. How are we going to win without him?
Um, but you, you probably live in, how's he feeling space more than what's going to happen to us straight after the game. And Simmo ran the six-week analysis on Collingwood. Just really briefly, look at Collingwood. So points four. So the competition at the moment has gone from 84 points a game to 90. So they're a goal better across the board. So points four, they're 16th, averaging 72 points.
And points against, they're third. And last year they were first at points against, the best defensive team, and they were ninth at scoring. So they've gone from ninth to 16th at scoring. So there's the first little red flag, what's going on with our scoring profile. Um, and then you can dig a little bit deeper about, you know, we're looking at from, um, stoppages or we're looking from turnovers.
So where are they at for that? So they'll look at that. Um, and the points, um, of the contested possession. So there's 16th the contested possession. And they're, where are they?

Chapter 3: How do coaches manage player emotions during critical games?
They're 14th at clearances. So they're bottom half around the contest. So they'll dig into those type of metrics and they'll go to work around, okay, our defense is good. We're averaging 76 points against, but how do we score more? What's happening? And that's what they'll dig into. And the top four for these metrics we'll go through in a minute. They'll look at that piece.
And I think it's built around the contest and clearance work. They need to get better at that. That's what it looks like, the data.
Brenton Sanderson's reaction to Michael Voss's press conference.
Yeah, I thought he handled that really well. Vossy, it would have been an incredibly challenging few days for him and the staff that support him, the football club and the families that are involved. And
Yeah, it was a difficult watch and quickly, obviously now with social media and what we've got access to, there was a lot of opinions and quickly we were able to make our own judgments of how it all unfolded. But yeah, I feel for Vossie. because he is the leader of that footy club and the visual leader.
And this would be not in the textbook of how to coach, is how to manage that on game day and now how to follow up that. But... Yeah, I know obviously Chris Davies is leading an investigation internally and the AFL are involved and we've just got to work out a way to do this better. But I thought, yeah, I agree with you.
I thought he's got a game to focus on and I thought he's handled that element of the press conference pretty well. He's got to now rally the troops, which is a massive challenge in a really important game. But yeah, credit to him for the way he handled that then.
And Sandoz set us up for how the Essendon, Collingwood and Zach Day clash will be won.
Number one, if I'm Craig McRae, I'm squeezing Essendon's ball movement early. So take away those mark chains. I mentioned how they've gone back to more of a possession game in the last two games. So get the game in a contest as early as you can. So get that sort of high, aggressive forward press going, force Essendon wide, slow and predictable.
