What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
I'm Gerard Waitley. Here's a snapshot of Tuesday, July 14.
Luke Hodge pondered what comes next for Collingwood's list. I'm not surprised what Fly was saying last night.
How is Collingwood rethinking its list strategy after recent success?
If you play in a grand final, win a grand final in 2023, your understanding is you want to continue to do it. You don't want to fall away straight away. So obviously the mindset for Coleman back then is players are going to help us now. Picks are going to help us in the future. And they were all about helping us right now. If you look at what teams that have stayed up the top for a long period of time have done, if you look what Richmond, they continue to bring in people. They brought in Tom Lynch after they won a flag. If you look at what Hawthorne did, they added everyone. They added someone every year onto their list that was going to help them stay up the top. Geelong do it consistently. Look at Sydney.
They've always gone and chased a big name up forward to try and help them stay up the top. So they've obviously got to the stage now where they've pushed everything they possibly can to try and get another flag, realising that it's probably not their time. And it's time to recheck what your strategy is. And their strategy is going, well, let's go back to the draft. pick up a couple young guys but the best part about free agents on a big club you can go and snag a couple people who can help you push back up quickly and I know I spoke pretty openly about St Kilda should be trying to chase Lockie Neal because of not only what he can do the next two years and when St Kilda bought in all these the four players last year it wasn't about 2026 they kept saying it's about 27, 28, 29 Lockie Neal would help that stage but what he's going to do is teach these younger guys coming through
So if you look at Collingwood's philosophy of let's go and get some senior guys, but then add them with a few draft picks, there's no better person to actually teach craft. So if you look at Lockie Neal, who wants to be the best player that he possibly can be, you'll find no one better than what he is. You watch him do the extras outsider training. If you can have a 17, 18, 19, 20-year-old kid see how much touch and how much want that Lockie Neal wants to be the best he can be, There's no better example for them out there. So, look, they've changed their strategy because of where they are on the ladder and I've got no issues with that. The fact that, did everyone think that they were lying?
Why do premiership clubs like Richmond and Geelong keep recruiting established veterans?
A lot of clubs lie to the media because they want to sell a story and if they were pushing to get players, at least they know externally that other clubs, it's the only way they're going to go. So, look, all clubs lie towards the media, Gerard, so we shouldn't be shocked at that. And Hodgie witnessed Essendon first-hand on Sunday. If I could have left at halftime, Gerard, I would have. And I feel for the Essendon supporters who rocked up there. They had so many supporters up there. For a team who's 18th and playing insipid football, there was a lot of Essendon supporters that rocked up to watch their team play on the weekend. And the ease. I just look back at the second quarter and I remember I was...
Just sitting there, just shaking my head that the ease that the Lions were able to move the ball from defensive 50 to forward 50, but not just go out. And it's sort of hard because Brisbane Lions are the best team to do this. When they've got to build up the composure and the calmness, they understand what each other's doing. They've played together for a long time. But they were able to go through the corridor with such ease. No pressure on them. And I sat back and said, how can a team who should have trained defense all preseason, years beforehand, come in and just not be on the same page? That actually looked like there was times where Jackson Pryor tried to hand over Kyle Lohman, I think it was, to...
a midfielder who would sit back, but then the midfielder didn't want to go and pick him up. So these two are having a barney on the football field at the same time where Lohman turns around and hits a leaning forward.
