Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 8.273 Gerard Waitley

I'm Gerard Waitley. Here's a snapshot of Tuesday, March 26. Essendon's sacking of coach Brad Scott dominated talkback.

Chapter 2: What led to Brad Scott's sacking as Essendon coach?

8.293 - 10.699 Gerard Waitley

Ron's on the Bass Coast. Ron, welcome aboard.

11 - 29.352 Luke Hodge

We turn up with no passion, intensity. There's nothing urgent about their game. We beat Melbourne. In Adelaide, I was there. We had Edwards up forward, Langford down back, Cesada's playing in the middle. All of a sudden, Brad Scott turned around and put Edwards on the wing, Langford back to forward.

29.672 - 38.003 Luke Hodge

Cesada doesn't get a game, even though he gets nearly best on the ground in the reserves every week. The club needed a new direction. He wasn't taking us anywhere.

Mark's in Epping. Welcome to you, Mark. The team is rudderless. This bloke was brought in to teach us to play team defence. We get cut to pieces every week. I understand that there wouldn't be one incident supporter today who's disappointed with this decision. Frank is in Wonturna. Hello to you, Frank.

54.617 - 74.611 Jordan Lewis

Been a pretty hectic 24 hours with Neil Denner. Now the coach is gone. I knew that was going to happen. It was just a matter of time. But you could see it with the players. They weren't playing with a passion. If you look at what I remember when Neil Denneher was playing, the passion that guy put into his game when he was playing.

74.671 - 95.868 Gerard Waitley

Ronnie St Glen Iris. Welcome, Ronnie. I'm a troubled Essendon supporter. I can understand the decision three and a half years in, still bottom four in all defensive metrics, too many players regressing. no discernible game plan and some selection integrity issues. But my main point is about the board and the text you read out touched on this.

96.088 - 107.292 Gerard Waitley

The decision to extend Scott to a fifth year, two years into a four-year contract with no get-out clause is just utterly irresponsible. Luke's in Airport West. Welcome to you, Luke.

Chapter 3: How do fans feel about the decision to sack Brad Scott?

107.322 - 125.581 Unknown

I think we've finally made a good decision here but it's the continued poor decisions that worry me and what he's done to the senior leaders at the club. We've finally got some green shoots starting to come through with the young boys but I don't know if they've got the right people in place to actually show them the way through.

I think Andy McGrath's a really good trying player but he's never been there. He's never done anything really in his career so how does he teach the next generation to become successful and Seeing Craig Bozzo come back to tell a board how to actually run the club is also concerning as well. He's had no success either.

147.209 - 151.015 Gerard Waitley

Andrew in Nidri. Andrew, just give us your overall thoughts.

0

151.937 - 180.051 Unknown

A great decision. The club basically had to do it. What I love about the media is that you criticise the Essendon Football Club each week about how poor we are and how bad we're going and There's no structure. There's no game plan. As soon as the club takes a decision to sack him, oh, well, it's a terrible decision. No, he basically had a confused game plan. We were going nowhere.

Chapter 4: What were the main criticisms of Brad Scott's coaching style?

180.592 - 204.019 Unknown

Week after week, it appeared that the players did not know what they were doing. Our performance is right across the ground. There's no defensive pressure. The buck stops with him. John's in Hyten. Welcome, John. Those clubs that have succeeded are the ones that have stuck that. And if the board is flinched when they've gone to make the decision to put Brad Scott in for a long-term rebuild...

204.353 - 223.257 Unknown

And now they're chopping him because someone's decided they don't like the way it's going. It's on the board. It's not on Brad Scott. He can clearly coach. He's just doing what he needs to do to set them up to then move forward. That's a joke that they would just chop him and not give him the due course that he's been told that he's going to get. Because you can't make those big, hard decisions.

223.237 - 224.979 Unknown

without taking the longer process.

0

225.44 - 229.144 Gerard Waitley

Luke Hodge cast his judgments under the leadership portfolio.

0

229.544 - 238.234 Unknown

Morning, Gerard. You sort of sit back here and go, where should we start? Do you go through the draft failures they've had over the past?

238.254 - 251.91 Unknown

Do you go through the fact that the coach and the off-field side of things, they're not on the same page from the communication that they've all given and even to what you just played before with Brad Scott and how he was saying he was fortunate because the now president and the now CEO was on the board at the time.

252.464 - 277.392 Unknown

Or do you go through the instability of the board, the fact that the sacking of Brad can get leaked out? Do we compare him to Carlton, as you mentioned before, where we've spoken about how poor Carlton have been about throwing out a coach whenever things have got tough because of outside noises and the board have faltered to it. But Essendon have had more coaches since 2008 than Carlton.

277.372 - 287.381 Unknown

So you sort of sit back and go, everyone talks about these big clubs, the history of these two big clubs, the premierships, they've been insignificant for a long period of time. And there's a reason for that.

287.582 - 311.062 Gerard Waitley

Jordan Lewis recounted the hiring of Scott at the Bombers. He had to be convinced that he wanted to get back into coaching. I think we all know that he had a job at the AFL, a well-paying job, a really secure job. So for him to come back into the coaching frame, he had to be convinced. And So he presented late, but I know I'm speaking for myself, but it was unanimous.
