Chapter 1: What topics are introduced in the episode overview?
It's Stuart Waitley. Thanks for listening to the podcast. In this episode, the art of coaching with Ken Hinckley and the eminently sensible Phil Davis, the head of the Big Bash League's Alistair Dobson joined me in the studio. We found Brad Blanks in Boston after England's second World Cup match, former soccerer Jimmy Jago, and nerdy stats with Peter Blucher. You can get in touch at any time.
Waitley at sen.com.au. Thanks for listening. Enjoy.
Wednesday morning.
This is your town.
This is your station. This is Waitley.
Good morning. The gag order has been imposed by the AFL. No more commenting on umpires by coaches and players. It's zero tolerance and $20,000 fines from here. What would have happened if Zach Butters had said yesterday that Showdown 60 would be his last? Would the world have exploded?
Or would we have been mature enough to admire a player giving his all for his club for the remainder of the season, as he has done for the first 15 rounds? England has been held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana at the World Cup in a thoroughly uninspiring match. We'll head to Boston later.
And how will BBL16 fare against a backdrop of such uncertainty and rancour over privatisation, especially in this town where our defunct teams will stagger on? The boss of the Big Bash is going to join me in the studio as the morning unfolds. a little taster of today's debates and interviews. The 40 Winks temper text will hum away as ever, 0433 98 11 16.
The difference is temper and the Belgravia apparel open line, 1300 736 736. Belgravia apparel delivers elite football team wear solutions. We'll take your calls as the morning goes. Wednesdays brings us the eminently sensible Phil Davis, who has been deep in the AFL season structure concepts. And we start with the art of coaching with Ken Hinckley, which feels particularly timely today.

Chapter 2: What are the implications of the AFL's gag order on umpire criticism?
13 wins in a row for the season. Ken Hinckley wins. All from ear to ear knows what's on offer this season if the planets continue to align.
They didn't quite align, but 13 games is a historic landmark. Once you get beyond 13 games, well, that's a guarantee of success in recent times. The Art of Coaching with Ken Hinckley. Hello to you, Kenny. Good morning, Gerard. How are you today? I'm well. I'm well. Good memories or bittersweet memories, 13 in a row?
No, well, because you told me that once you get past 13, it's a secret to success. It is. And we never got past 13. And I look back and think back and go, well, some of our wins in that period were just remarkable with what we were able to do. They weren't They weren't dominant wins that we're probably seeing from Fremantle as much. I mean, Fremantle have been very dominant in most of their wins.
I do remember that season. We did some incredibly crazy things to get it over the line and win games. And, you know, it was probably... I don't want to say it was a false 13, but it was a lucky 13, if there can be a lucky 13, Gerard. So... We got through okay. My last memories of a side that I think that I was involved with, I think it was back to Geelong.
I reckon in 2009, Geelong and St Kilda played off in round 13. Maybe it must have been round 14 where both sides entered the round 13 and 0, I think. And, you know, both sides go on to play in the grand final that year in Geelong, getting away with a famous premiership.
So the streaks are Essendon 20 in a row, and that results in a flag. St Kilda 19 in a row in 2009. They're the runner-up. 16 wins for Brisbane 2001, premiership. Geelong 2022, premiership. 15 wins Geelong 2007, premiership. Geelong 2008, runner-up. 14 wins, Collingwood 2011 runner-up.

Chapter 3: What are the challenges faced by the Big Bash League amid uncertainty?
And then the 13-win bracket is Carlton in 2000, Geelong 2009 flag, Geelong 2011 flag, Richmond 2019 flag, Port Adelaide 2023, and Fremantle 2026. So it's a pretty good ā well, I'm going to say yours was a gritty 13, Kenny. It was a gritty 13 for the ā But otherwise, it takes a super team to be winning like this.
Yeah, it does. I mean, it's incredible that you can get it. Because in our competition, it's so even, so close. And, you know, so many things that can go against you. I mean, Freo, I think this week, I've taken notice. I don't think they've got a player on the injury list, Gerard. I think they're going to take a clean sheet to this round of football, which is remarkable. What are we up to?
Round 16, I think it is. We're up to round 16 and they're going to take a clean sheet. So, yeah, ours was gritty. Theirs has been pretty smooth at this point in time and pretty clean. And look, it could have been 14 already because they did their round one loss. Yeah. was an eight goal first quarter burst against the Cats where they were five or six up. So, you know, they could already be on 14.
Look, they're on track. There's no doubt with all those records you just read out, they're on track to do what those teams have done. And at least, at very least, I would imagine. be in the grand final. And I think right now they deserve, rightly so, they deserve to be favourites for the premiership. And you can't ask to do much more. That list is star-studded. It is an unbelievable list.
And, you know, the pick-ups, the players they've brought in from other clubs have just topped them right off at the right time. And, you know, drafting and recruiting and list management has been elite for a long period of time. And JL's coaching incredibly well. And they've got it all in front of them, haven't they? They've got a great opportunity.
I don't want to mose them because I just know how hard it is. And I know JL's been at it for a while too. So, you know, and Friot are a bit like Port in lots of ways. You know, they haven't quite got there very often. Port have only won one flag. Friot are yet to get their flag in the AFL competition.
So I think most of us, most of us, you know, if we're not aligned to a club, we're actually, we're hoping and with fingers crossed for Friot to do something pretty special.

Chapter 4: How does Ken Hinckley reflect on his coaching experiences?
All right. Just before we leave this, I just want to go through your 13. So it starts with Sydney. That's the ball touched on the line. So there's a whisker in that. There's a seven-point win over St Kilda at Marvel, a five-point win over Essendon at Adelaide, a four-point win over Melbourne at Adelaide Oval. And then the Houston kick after the siren for a four point win at the MCG.
I remember I was in Vietnam when that happened. I just text you afterward. It was, it was, they were just crazy things. It was like the cosmic forces had taken hold for a period of time.
Yeah, they had. And if you remember the Essendon, when you were away, so the Essendon one, I'm in the background as Dan's taking the kick. I remember saying, I'm smiling, I'm laughing. And I'm almost sitting there going, well, this can't continue. This is just going to happen again. And Houston's got the ball in his hands. He's our best kicker in the club. He's outside 50.
And we've won all those games that you talked about. And I thought, this is just going to happen again. We're going to win again. So I think gritty is the right word, isn't it, Ger? When you think about those margins. Poor old Essendon. They were a bit stiff. Well, we beat them by five. And then after the siren, we beat them again. Yeah.
So we might have started the Essendon Roth perhaps and put them into a mess.
And then you were just gassed by the end. So it's a straight sets exit. So you lose four in a row, then win three in a row to finish the home and away season, but you were gassed by the finals.
Yeah, I think Carlton ended up beating us. Vossi might have beaten us at Marvel, I reckon, to break the run, and we were beaten badly. And you could just ā Look, we were given everything.
We were trying with our utmost to hang on and keep going, but you could just see the fatigue had set in and the performance by the team was remarkable to get to that position, but we just weren't able to sustain it right to the end. It was such a pity because it was a great season to remember in football. It was.
Ken Hinckley with The Art of Coaching. Is the AFL right to emphasise its gag order on umpire criticism for coaches and players?

Chapter 5: What player signings are expected as the season approaches?
And we've got clubs itching to hit the market and sign the rest of their list, including overseas players.
So
lots of big news to come and the season's only just around the corner.
So that flurry of activity when you lift that embargo, when will that be?
It'll be sometime hopefully late July.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the player signing embargo?
Each club under our contracting rules can sign up to 10 players on the men's side before the embargo. We then shut it down and it allows us to make some changes to the rules if we need to and then we open it up and there is a flurry and whether we have a draft or not, I think July and August are going to be lots of news coming out of clubs on who they're signing.
Alistair, really appreciate you coming into the studio. Thank you. Thanks, Gerard. Appreciate it. Fascinating times. Alistair Dobson, who runs the BBL and the WBBL. 0433 98 11 16. Whiteley on SEN.
Edge through to Mooney and that is the game. Comfortable win to Australia, a very big win indeed by 113 runs. They put on 199 but they've rolled Pakistan for 86.
So it's totally dominant what Australia is doing for the time being at the T20 World Cup in England through the pool stage. So big wins so far.

Chapter 7: How is the Big Bash League impacted by recent events?
It's a tournament that's going to struggle for exposure, I think, given where it is on the streaming platform, what's going on with the World Cup. But we will plot their course through. So Australia 7 for 199, which was led by Elise Perry, 71. Pakistan all out for 86 in the 14th over.
The trouble that the BBL is going to confront, and it's how widespread is this, is just the hostility that is there in the fan base at the moment for what's happened in this town across the past three weeks, which I think is encapsulated, and not singularly in this, but... You've ripped the heart out of families and kids who supported the BBL clearly based around dollars.
Damage is already done to both players and families parting with their hard-earned. SA20 will be the preferred T20 league for player movement and preferred franchises. Can you ask Cricket Australia if they believe in fairy tales too? I've not missed a Melbourne Stars game. However, will not be attending any games this upcoming season due to what they have done.
If they think they're going to get big crowds at the MCG this year, they live in a fantasy land. That's from Anthony. So what is the level of resentment and hurt that exists around what's happened with the Melbourne teams? Can there be a glow around the last season of the Stars and the Renegades season?
After 15 years that we were told that essentially the legacy was worthless and yet they still go around in the new season. This is not easy to navigate and very much will reside in your hearts and minds as you think about how you go to the cricket in this town across the summer.
Always imagine the Junction Oval as a 25,000 boutique stadium for state cricket, Melbourne training and interstate Saints games or Saints games against interstate opposition teams.
local crowds and uk conversions that's from fizz so the junction oval has the lights and we're going to see at least wbbl cricket played there across the summer as as night fixtures and maybe even a bbl game on that front i like this paul sent this through on just the pathways for umpiring and the reality at the moment i played football at a grade amateur level
I was president of a local club and then a head trainer, so I believe I've got a good grounding on how the system works. I became an umpire in an attempt to change the system from within. There was a boys club mentality within the umpiring ranks where the senior umpires, regardless of skill, were given priority over young and new umpires.
I umpired more than 200 senior games, but eventually gave up as the bias was so ingrained, I couldn't change it. Another problem was the retired umpires who graded and mentored young umpires would not pull up umpires on bad decisions for fear of upsetting them and losing them. By the way, in my experience, two umpires is far more successful and easier to umpire than three or four.

Chapter 8: What are the key takeaways from the Socceroos' performance?
Hawthorne Geelong, so forth. So interested in your thoughts. 2.5, Ben. Thank you. I've enjoyed reading all the ideas that have come through. You referenced the COVID period. I know we're not going to have a serious conversation around the tournament. I've read the temperature on that. But if we did the in-season tournament, it would be 33 games across three weeks. That would be COVID.
We would have a game every night. So I have been... I'm always resistant to those who say, well, it would have no interest. I think it would have extreme interest. If you gave us footy every night for three weeks, which is essentially what would happen, you'd have this incredible amount frenzy, um, which I think would generate enormous interest and energy. Would it actually mean something?
That's where it gets challenging. Culturally, you'd have to put the work into that, but you'd have 33 games in three weeks. Uh, and that would be a throwback to the COVID era for sure. And those were very comforting nights when the footy was on the telly every night. Uh, David in Turack. Hello, David.
Hi, Jared. I just have one question. Um, 25 years ago, we got rid of all the heritage sort of teams in soccer, South Melbourne Alice and Heidelberg and Melbourne Croatia, etc. Why is it now okay to have an Indian cricket team playing in domestic cricket?
Yeah, that jumps a few steps, David. So that's not quite where we are at the moment. And what does foreign ownership look like in the team that is there? It won't be an Indian cricket team. It might be owned by an Indian company or an IPL team. So that jumps a few steps, I reckon, as to what it's actually going to be. A little bit of Socceroos chat next. This is Waitley for Hyundai.

Six minutes of stoppage time has elapsed. Pickford pumps it forward. Referee lets it roll, but Garner get it clear, and they have the point they came for. Full time in Boston. England nil, Garner nil. Both teams move to four points.
And it was a really disappointing game for what it might have been. So where in the world is Blanksy? He's holed up somewhere in Boston. Hello, Blanksy. Oh, Gerard, how are you, mate? Yeah, I'm a couple of miles actually from Foxborough.
Yeah, the stadium that saw Tom Brady dominate for so many years. And as an English soccer fan, you could say that was one of the more disappointing performances of England.
