G'day everybody and welcome to Waitly on this Thursday morning, the morning of The top of the table clash between Fremantle and Sydney. So excited about what might happen tonight. Tim Gossage will just get a bit of a flavouring ahead of tonight's game. And there's lots of coaches speaking today. So we'll get to as many of those as we can through the next three hours as well. Good morning, Wadi. Yeah, I am actually. The only thing is it's on at 8 o'clock at night, which, you know, it's starting to push. It pushes the boundaries a bit at three-quarter time. I've said this before, the best thing about living in Perth for 12 years was footy started at 5.30 or even 4.30 with daylight savings. And come 9 o'clock, she's all over and it's time for bed. So, yeah, I'm sure the AFL and the media rights holders will not change things. But, yeah, it's a different world in WA and having footy on, you know, almost you've got to leave work early to watch the footy at home was brilliant. So looking forward to tonight. It's going to be a legit top-of-the-table clash and, two teams who have really improved on last year from a numbers point of view as well.
I remember growing up watching the Foster's Cup or the Sterling Cup on a Tuesday night that didn't start until about quarter to nine. So they were finishing those games after 11 o'clock and Waverley in about four degrees.
I bet you those games didn't go for an hour and a half, though. I bet you they were pretty punchy back in the day. The games has extended, hasn't it? And I know they're working hard on trying to reduce it a little bit, but there is such a thing as too much football, I think, with the length of the game, which they're trying to work on.
They are. So what happens tonight? We've got a situation where we have two teams clearly ahead of everybody else. So while it's important to win for obvious reasons, there is that element of, well, it's not the end of the world if they don't. Do they hold anything back because the likelihood is they'll play in finals or do they want to have that psychological advantage and to get one over the other at this time of year? Yeah, it's interesting when you talk about, oh, they don't need to win. But I'm not sure. We're all different, aren't we? I'm thinking as a senior coach, you can't help but go, if we drop this one and then we lose next week, suddenly top twos, we can't, can we? And it's sort of the nerves creep in a little bit when you lose a game.
And I'm sure Justin might be a little bit more confident than perhaps I was.
Yeah.
And Dean's in his second year, so he's sort of new to it all. But I'm sure supporters are out there thinking, in particular Fremantle supporters, is, okay, are we the real deal? So I think there's a bit more on the line tonight where we're playing the best side in the competition. They're both probably thinking that, and they're both probably thinking we're the best side in the competition. So cutting it down a little bit, what's happened from this year to last year with both these sides is interesting, and I've done a little bit of research on it. So Sydney's time in forward half, they've gone from ninth to first, for example. So we think they're a handball team, and they are.
