Hello, welcome to Doctor's Notes. I'm Dr.
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 1:03
Chris. I'm joined today by my ankle twin. Doctors aren't, that's me. I mean both our ankles are twins, so we're sort of ankle quadruplets. We've just finished recording an episode with physiotherapist Jen Tawyer on the subject of ankles.
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 1:19
Now in the main episode, Zandy, we got a very clear idea of what the ankle is. We really celebrated the ankle, how it functions and how to keep it functioning, prevent injury, and how well to recover from injuries. I
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 1:31
think we were left with an almost Victorian appreciation for the beauties of the ankle.
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 1:36
That's right, and if you haven't heard the episode, go and listen to it and get your socks off, get your shoes off, have a look at your ankles. There's a play along with that episode. Now in Doctor's Notes, we are gonna dig into Jen's professional background as a physiotherapist, her experience, particularly working with professional dancers on Strictly and in the West End.
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 1:56
And we're going to talk to her about different sports, how those affect our ankles and the role played by footwear in looking after our ankle health. I have a little
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 2:04
theory. Can I do my theory and we'll put this to our expert that when you go hiking on uneven ground, whether you're in a military context or doing it recreationally, you wear little ankle boots, don't you, for ankle support. And when I do that, I just wear trainers because I think Those boots don't offer any support and actually you're better off knowing that your ankle is unsupported. That's my little theory. Like if you're
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 2:27
wearing a parachute, you're more likely to crash the plane. Is that sort of the idea? Yes. Yes. Is that it? I think it's something like that. If you've got a sort of safety net on, it's safety. Safety can make things more dangerous. Yeah. Okay. There is an idea. But I also
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 2:41
I just don't believe that walking boots actually support
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 2:44
your
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 2:44
ankle too.
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 2:47
Before listeners throw away their walking boots, they w should hear from our expert. Throw them away right now. Come on, Sandy, let's open the notes. Make the little noise.
Dr. Chris van Tulleken 3:03
Jen, thank you so much for staying with us for Doctor's Notes. It's all good. Tell us about how you got interested in ankles.
Genevieve Tawiah 3:10
I think most of my interest in it comes from dance and I dance myself and I am quite a barefoot socks mover. So I think that exploration of like what the foot and ankle does and my interest in it probably comes from those roots as opposed to specifically anything I've seen physio-wise and just understanding how that floor connection can make me feel more grounded and transferring that kind of approach.
Dr. Xand van Tulleken 3:37
You've worked on strictly and with loads of dancers.

What is the guest’s background and why are they interested in ankle health?

Dr. Xand van Tulleken 3:39
What's your experience been like on doing that?
Genevieve Tawiah 3:43
With working with dancers, gosh, they rely on their ankles so much, depending on the style. They rely on their whole body. But it's very interesting what and this is speaking to general professional dancers, you can be very, very, very capable in your dance style, but still have some weaknesses around the ankle or less awareness around there, but have brilliant function. And when you give people that extra strength or that extra extra knowledge, it's really interesting seeing how that transfers in the skill. And let's say, I don't know, giving someone who's really capable of doing a pirouette or a turn that might be a ballet dancer some calf load stability exercises on their rise and then them going, oh my gosh, I just whipped out another three turns and that was much easier.
