Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Here's your Closing Bell Brief for Friday, April 10th. I'm Katherine Sullivan for The Wall Street Journal. U.S. stocks finished the day with mixed results following a significant inflation report.
The Dow fell 0.6% after consumer prices hit a nearly two-year high. The S&P 500 fell a tenth. Investors weighed the March inflation data against a historic drop in consumer sentiment. Gasoline prices drove much of the monthly increase in the cost of living. The Nasdaq managed to climb 0.4% despite the broader economic concerns. Treasury yields edged higher while oil prices finished the day lower.
Chapter 2: What impact did the latest inflation report have on the stock market?
Among individual companies, Organon shares surged roughly 28% on Friday. This jump followed reports that Sun Pharmaceuticals submitted a binding offer for the women's healthcare company. Coherent shares rose more than 8% during the trading session. The laser equipment company is seeing increased momentum through its partnership with NVIDIA.
And shares in biotech company Replimune Group sank over 19% after the FDA denied approval of its melanoma drug for the second time. Heads up, an artificial intelligence tool helped us make this episode by creating summaries that were based on WSJ reporting and then reviewed and adapted by an editor. We'll have a lot more coverage of the day's news on the WSJ's West News podcast.
