Here's your closing bell brief for Monday, August 10th. I'm Pierre Biennamé for the Wall Street Journal. U.S. stocks fell today after the SP 500 finished last week at an all-time high. The Nasdaq fell 0.3%, while the Dow and SP 500 each ticked down roughly 0.1%. Meanwhile, oil prices are rising, with Brent Crude futures trading at nearly $88 a barrel as investors wait for major updates from the war with Iran. Over the weekend, Tehran made a list of demands for opening the Strait of Hormuz, including the U.S. US withdrawing its forces, ending all sanctions, and paying war reparations. Among individual companies, Berkshire Hathaway's stock jumped nearly one and a half percent, after the company said its quarterly profit more than doubled.
That was powered by investment gains and strong results from its industrial and retail businesses. US listed shares of Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing were little changed, despite the chipmaker reporting a sharp rise in revenue for July. Varex Imaging, which makes X-ray imaging components, saw its stock soar nearly 49% after Teledyne Technologies said it would buy the company for about $1.1 billion. And shares in the Australian rare Earth miner Sunrise Energy jumped 16% in Sydney after President Trump awarded the company a $400 million loan. The U.S. government will get priority in purchasing the company's output. in an arrangement the Defense Department has used in many deals over critical minerals.
