Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Here's your midday brief for Thursday, January 22nd. I'm Pierre Bien-Aimé for The Wall Street Journal. The Commerce Department today released updated figures on GDP growth, saying the U.S.
grew at a 4.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter. That's slightly stronger than the initial estimate that came out last month and confirms an economic upswing that had surprised analysts. Procter & Gamble today posted slightly higher revenue in its latest quarter thanks to higher prices. Those helped offset a decline in sales volume.
The maker of Crest toothpaste and Pantene shampoo cut its earnings outlook for the fiscal year ending in June, citing higher restructuring charges, but says it expects commodity costs to ease a bit. And in the U.S., colorectal cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer in younger people. That's according to a new analysis published today by the American Cancer Society.
Chapter 2: What do the updated GDP numbers reveal about third-quarter growth?
And before we go, a correction. More than 1.2 million people under age 50 died of cancer in the U.S. from 1990 through 2023. An earlier version of this podcast incorrectly said the figure applied only to colorectal cancer.
