Chapter 2: What is the U.S. conducting a rescue operation for in Iran?
is conducting a search and rescue operation for the crew of an American jet fighter that went down over Iran. It's the first known loss of a jet inside the country since the start of the war. Iranian state television said Iranians would be rewarded for finding any American crew members and turning them over alive. We'll have more on this developing story on WSJ.com.
The Trump administration is seeking $1.5 trillion in defense spending for the 2027 fiscal year, by far the most in modern history. That's according to the budget proposal summary that the White House released today.
Trump promised a defense request of this size back in January, before the U.S. launch strikes on Iran. The budget also includes cuts to non-defense spending, including to education and the Environmental Protection Agency. Congress will need to determine which pieces will be passed into law before the fiscal year begins on October 1st.
And the U.S. added 178,000 jobs in March, according to the Labor Department, far exceeding economists' expectations. That's a rebound from last month's net loss of a revised 133,000 jobs. Health care was the big driver behind the gains, while the construction and leisure and hospitality industries also saw some increases. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.3 percent.
