Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
AI is transforming industries, but the data centers powering it require more energy and water than ever. At the break, join Christoph Beck, Chairman and CEO of Ecolab, for insights on using water effectively while safeguarding this critical resource for future generations.
Here's your morning TNB Tech Minute for Tuesday, January 27. I'm Julie Chang for The Wall Street Journal. Tesla closed the year with lower sales in Europe as Chinese auto giant BYD continued to grow. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, new car registrations for Tesla models slumped 20% on-year to about 35,000 units in December.
Annually, Tesla sales dropped 27% to roughly 238,000 units. In contrast, according to ACEA data, registrations for China's BYD in Europe more than tripled to over 187,000 for the whole year. Globally, Tesla's sales fell 9% in 2025. The company has lost its crown as the world's leading EV maker to BYD.
Micron Technology plans to invest about $24 billion in Singapore over the next 10 years as it expands its manufacturing facility to meet surging demand for memory chips amid the AI boom. According to the country's Economic Development Board, Micron manufactures about 98% of its top-end flash memory chips, known as NAND, in Singapore.
The chip giant said today it broke ground on an advanced wafer fabrication facility located within the company's existing NAND manufacturing complex there. Micron said wafer output is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028.
And Pinterest is laying off about 15% of its workforce, or roughly 700 jobs, as part of a restructuring aimed at pivoting resources toward higher growth areas such as AI. The social media platform makes money through advertising, and the company has been hurt by a recent pullback in spending among larger companies.
Its CFO said in November that advertising pricing declined 24% in the third quarter. Shares have lost roughly 23% of their value over the past year. Pinterest said the restructuring is projected to be largely complete by the end of September. And that's your TNB Tech Minute. We'll be back this afternoon with more.
How are data center operators working to improve sustainability and water savings at every stage of the data center lifecycle? Here's Ecolab's Christoph Beck with some thoughts.

Chapter 2: What are the latest sales figures for Tesla in Europe?
The Mach 7 or the Mach 4, the ones that are really so focused on high-tech, are the most forward-looking. They have the means, they have the mindset, they have the passion for innovation, and they're really open to try new things as well because everything is new with AI and with that technology as well.
I think even if we're not where we wanted to be with that industry right now, we will be ahead in the next few years because innovation that's coming up right now is working much better than we thought. And it's really thinking in circular ways, being in a data center or in a microchip manufacturing plant.
